I am wondering if anyone here has ever used silk flowers for a wedding, or is thinking about it. I would love to hear opinion on using silk flowers for weddings.

I am considering using silk flowers for my wedding in Disney, this is a recent notion but with reason:

1) I can make them with my girlfriend who is an ex-pro-florist in NJ, then bring them to Florida and thus save them FOREVER... which I know for a fact my lovable, sentimental and hoarding DF would LOVE

2) they are cheaper (i would want to get the best possible but still think they would be cheaper)

3) i have never been a fan of flowers at weddings. i get it, and do think they complete the look but, i feel that the fact that they are soooo over priced for the wedding takes all of the beauty out of it. Plus for me I am more into sculptural design and candles for a centerpiece.

I just don't want it to seem cheap and lame. I think I could do something nice with them, and I have seen some beautiful silk flowers, but I just have this 1970's silk flower horror fear in my head ( if that makes any sense).

OPINIONS AND ANALYSIS PLEASE! LOL I love my Disney family here, ya'll rock my world! :dance3:

I used silk flowers for my bouquets and boutineers(spelling?) I made them all myself which was not very hard, and a TON of money. I agree that flowers are sooooo overpriced, I felt like I would rather spend the money on food, etc. that people are more likely to remember. I have plenty of pictures in my PJ if you would like to see how they turned out. I will note that I am using real flowers for the centerpieces.

I think silks are just fine :) I worked for a florist for many years and did alot of weddings in silks. All of the points you provided was the same reason they decided to use them. They keep forever!

I think you should go for it :wizard:

I'm having silk flowers. I ordered mine on a site called wedideas they also have a facebook page. The pictures are beautiful. I bought 9 pieces (bride, BM, Groom, Best man and family coursages) for $250 and received a free toss bouquet.

I was recently at my friends house and we were looking at pictures of her wedding and I commented on how pretty the flowers were asked her if she pressed any of them. She looked at me funny and told me they were silks. She looked at me funny because I was one of her bridesmaids. She also looked at me funny because she keeps the ball bouquets in the guest room where I had just spent the night.

:rotfl2:

So ya - go for it! When done properly - they look quite beautiful.

I will deffinitly have to check this company out! thank you. I don't know, if I go with silk I still may want to do it myself. I am having an up!/adventure theme ish wedding. So I really like the idea of doing things myself.. finding the flowers and putting it together ... all apart of the adventure! :)

That is too friggin funny! honestly you didnt know! that is crazy! Where did you friend have them done? or did she do them her self? Thanks for the vote yes and for the laugh! :rotfl2:

by all means if you have the skill or know someone who can help you make them go for it! I had silk bouquets for my bridesmaids, moms corsages and mens boutainnaires. Best choice ever made! I saved over $400 no lie! the only flowers that were fresh were my bouquet and 2 floral arrangements I had. Go for it!

HA! You're welcome. :rotfl: I'm crazy that way.

I'm pretty sure she, her mother, and her aunt worked on them together. I'm also pretty sure her aunt had/has a silk flower shop.

Thanks, yeah I am figuring if I do them all in silk I will save over $1000.00! Well i am going to ask my girlfriend but not pressure her... I dont want to make it seem I just want her help for free. She's actually the mother of two bridesmaids of mine. But shes always been a good friend to me. So lets hope!

I am actually doing my floral in silk as well and I am from NJ and will be fed exing them before hand to my wedding coordinator! I saved a TON!

I got 3 boutonnieres, two corsages, a bridesmaid bouquet and a bouquet for my MK shoot as well as another boutonniere for DF for that shoot as well! I believe all that came to 265!!! My bouquet for my MK shoot was priced at 299 alone lol I am happy to have it forever as well as I plan on bringing my bouquet to work for my desk :)

The floral artist is from Orange, NJ. I can forward you her contact info if you are interested, I wanted mine to look as real as possible and her work is fabulous! She is also doing lil hidden Mickeys for me on the stems :)

I did all the flowers for one of my DD's wedding: centerpieces, corsages, altar flowers, bridesmaid's, everything. They looked so real, people could not believe they were silk. They were lovely and yours will be too. Good luck and have a wonderful wedding and life together!

I used silk for my flowers too. I knew I wanted to keep my flowers and it just wasn't an option if they were real.

I'm making my own using natural touch flowers. They really do look just like real flowers. I agree with what everyone else has said, I wanted to spend my money elsewhere and flowers just aren't that important to me. I made my own bouquet already for about $50 (because of trial and error and buying extra supplies that I didn't need). If you live near a Michael's arts & crafts store use their 40% coupon to stock up and you'll save a fortune.

I was considering doing all my flowers in silk however... when i asked our wedding planner about it she said it would be fine, but in terms of centerpieces and any sort of decoration flowers for pues, aisle flowers, alter pieces, etc... disney will NOT touch the flowers. You have to have someone else do it for you. She said it was a liability purpose.

She said as long as you have someone from your wedding take care of the decorating then its perfectly fine but I'm not so sure I want someone to pay for airfare/hotel to MISS the wedding itself so they can do WORK.

I might still do silk for the boquets and boutineers but everything else i think i'm going through disney...

Thank you for posting that pic your bouquet is beautiful!

Also thank you to OP for starting this thread it is a topic I'm interested too I love the idea of preserving your bouquet but I'm in the UK so I figure that would be difficult with customs regs, silk looks like the ideal way around this.

I was going to make my own bouquet with silk flowers. This was my plan for a long time. But I had a hard time getting the flowers I wanted, and in order to get the high quality silk ones I wanted, I would be spending more than Disney was charging :scared1: and on top of that I would have to make sure it got to and from Disney safely. In the end, I used Disney and had fresh flowers, and it worked well for me. I will say though, if you plan on preserving/keeping your bouquet, you would spend a lot more to do it with fresh flowers than keeping your silks, so the price might even out.

Your welcome! :) it has been helpful getting different opinions.

For me I think it will depend on if I can get to our reception location the day before to set things up or not. I hope I can because I would really like to do the centerpieces myself. Thanks for the post! :thumbsup2

What silk flowers did you want that you couldnt get? According to the prices from Disney that I got... and what I have seen online for silk flowers I would be saving a lot. But I will definitely make sure of this now since you brought it up, before I actually say no to Disney completely.

I do think i would like to keep my flowers and I do know that preserving real flowers is very expensive. But if Disney ends up being cheaper then that would be key for me.

Thanks for the post!:cool1:

Something else to keep in mind. My bouquet (the one pictured) was a BM size, not the bride size, and from memory that saved a HUGE amount!

I am in the process of planning our July 2012 wedding at Disney and am really thinking about silk flowers for the ceremony and to line the aisle. Does Disney not have silk flowers? I've been looking at multiple places to find things but I'm not in Florida so I don't know what they have.

Yes, Disney will do silks for you as well. I had silks done and they looked fabulous. No preservation expenses and will always look beautiful in my curio cabinet. I don't have pictures available on my work pc, but can upload some later if you would like....just pm me, as I don't pop on here as often as I used to.
