Thoughts on new TSM line system

Interesting.

I've always been paired with another single rider so I didn't realize there was a time when single riders rode alone.

I think the only time it happens is when certain guests demand it and it becomes clear to the CM that it will be quicker to let a seat go out empty than to continue arguing with the guest.

I go solo often and while I'm fine on coasters or Test Track being paired with strangers - I'm NOT loving that idea of being paired with a stranger on TSM. That's a game of skill - and if I'm paired with someone really GOOD (I'm not great at all but getting better) - it's going to hurt my abilities to learn to do the game better. I usually ride it twice in one day - focusing one time on learning the type of target choices and their values - the second time on just trying to score. So - not loving this idea....

TSMM is a game of teamwork. You want to play with someone really good, because you will learn so much. The one time I was paired up with a 13yo TSMM genius, I learned a bunch of tricks, and scored a ton more points than I was used to. I improved quite a bit from the one ride with him, but I've never come close to replicating that score on my own. And if you want to learn the game better, you can find guides/videos on the internet.

I think Disney knows this is the preference of most... However - until track 3 opens... I think they are going to have to run the ride as full as possible because they have to manage the crowds of DHS with so few attractions!

TSMM in Disneyland used to have a single rider line. On one trip I got seated next to a 13yo boy. He interrogated me regarding my TSMM qualifications, seemed satisfied, and told me to follow his instructions. It was awesome, I got my highest score ever, thanks to many tricks he showed me, many of which I've never been able to replicate.
I'm glad it worked out for you, but the last time someone tried to give me "tips" on a ride, he ended up awkwardly following me from the Haunted Mansion to BTMRR, asking me what my plans were/what I was going to ride next, until I met back up with the rest of my party. :scared1:

Since we are 3, I am usually the odd man out, unless DS specifically requests that I sit with him (he usually wants DH:rolleyes:). It makes more sense for me to be the odd one on most rides, because I am smaller than DH. However, I got crammed next to a large guy at Universal on the Seuss High in the Sky Trolley. We got to know each other really well, because those cars are really small. They are really made for kids, not adults. I usually don't mind. I have been sat next to kids too. Usually it's not a problem, since the family sees me with my family. I dislike it if we end up in different cars and don't get in the ride photo together though.

As long as they don't start implementing it on rides that tend to cause physical contact with your seatmate (Primeval Whirl, BTMRR, etc) I like the idea. With ever-increasing wait times at so many attractions it only makes sense to run as close to full capacity as possible.

I am a single rider all the time. In the past at TSMM (both DLR and WDW) I always ride alone. There was a time about 4 years ago, that I did get paired with a young child whose parents were in row 8 (we were row 7), so back to back but in the same car. I let them know that their child was going to be riding with me and did they wish to switch with him so I would ride with one of the adults. They hadn't realized and were very thankful I spoke up before it was too late and we were seated.

We're a family of 5 and have ridden TSMM many, many times and have never had a "stranger" added to our group. We usually wait until the last hour of the day so that we can ride 4 times with very little wait.

The two lines at the stairs were not SB and FP. The one on the right was for groups of 1 or 2. This way they could fill cars that had one empty bench. Looks like they got smart and realized they could maximize capacity by loading more like 7DMT eliminating all the odd seats left open.

When we were just there a few weeks ago, we were a party of 2 and were sent to the left, which was a much longer line than the right side. So I don't understand the rest of your resaoning,s ince we were sent to the left instead of the right. The sorting happens after the second FP+ tap, BTW.

I'm just about always a single rider who would prefer to ride alone, but I don't believe that someone else's wait should be extended in order to accommodate my preference. Anything with an individual lap bar/seat belt/etc should have the space filled if there's people to fill it, IMO.

I'm with you, I prefer riding solo as well, unless I'm with my party. Peter Pan, for example, I almost always ride solo. If they tried to pair me with another single rider for that one, I would seriously cringe.

Ah, that explains things. we were there last week and whenever we had a fp for tsmm, we were directed to the left side ramp. I was confused as this dumps us in with the stand by folks. EVERY time the right side was so much shorter and the line moved very quickly, and people who were way behind us in FP line were loaded before us and we were stuck waiting on the stairs. We kept wondering why we were lumped in with the stand by line. We are party of 4.

- The thread is about how they have changed the loading by designating one line for even groups and one odd groups.
- I was responding due to confusion with the post above.
- Yes this is after the SB & FP merge (aka Mickey second scanner).
- After passing through this scanner there is no longer a SB and FP line, not the new loading method or the old loading method.
- I was responding because PP thought it was wrong that their even group was sent left when they had a FP.
- After the second scan there is no longer any FP or SB line, everyone is together.
- For many years the left lane was for all parties greater than 2 (so 3 or more) and the right lane was for parties one or two only.
- The vehicles are two cars with four benches so if they ended up with an empty bench they would put one of the one or two in it.
- It would be the equivalent of a Single Rider line other than the wait time before the 2nd scan area. (honestly if they expand this style of load single rider may go away)
- It was still this way in May.
- From reports it sounds like they decided to start loading like 7DMT and fill all seats.
- So now the left lane is for even numbers (your parties) and right lane is for odd parties.
- Previous to the new plan a party of four would have still gone left, a party of 2 would have gone right.
- Which lane had nothing to do with FP, the FP advantage was not being in the long queue before this merge point.
- After the second FP scan all are merged, much like other attractions.

This happened to us in August, only the CM's asked our group and the group behind us if our single riders were ok riding together in the same car before sending us to the loading area. I had noticed prior to that, that all odd numbered parties were being sent up one side and I had figured that is what was going on, however the few groups ahead of us were loaded with their single riders by themselves.

It was a bit awkward riding with a stranger on that ride, more so then on other rides where we have done single rider.

CMs try to seat groups in the same car together on rides where they take your photo. Just ask to switch rows if you are placed where you won't be in the same car. We've also asked for DD6 to be put in the front row of a car so she can be seen in the photo and were accommodated. After getting a bunch of ride photos where you can't see her at all because the bigger people in front of her put their arms in the air, we wised up.

I totally understand why Disney would want to do this to maximize the throughput of TSMM, and why many visitors would like it too.

I gotta say though, my kids would not be comfortable sitting next to an adult stranger on that ride (especially of the opposite sex), and I think that's totally understandable. You are whisked around in your own car separated from everyone. (except those on the backside of your car facing the other direction, but you can't see, reach, or touch them.) We don't raise our kids to be overly cautious of people they don't know, but it's just not a comfortable or enjoyable situation.

Looks like either my wife or I will need to plan on being the solo rider since our family is an odd number. which we may have done anyway. I want my kids to fully enjoy their ride without any issues.

I ran into this for the first time yesterday. I can see how it will move the line along faster but I was uncomfortable riding with a stranger. I'll be saving TSMM for the trips when DH comes along.

Now I can finally snag one of those coveted Great Movie Ride FPs ;-)

We now know why Great Movie Ride is Tier 1 now lol!

Even if the child is comfortable sitting next to a stranger, I don't believe the adults including Disney management and CMs should be comfortable with it. I don't see it as a big deal in a group situation on a roller coaster when the child is visible at all times, but I think it's a bad idea for rides like HM and TSMM.

Why is that? What is your specific fear about a situation like this?
