I just wanted to share our experience at DL and DCA from our trip last week. DH and I are huge WDW fans and were really looking forward to checking out DL. Unfortunately, we were pretty disappointed. Here is a rundown, in no particular order, of our experience.

-We stayed at HoJo's and were VERY unhappy with our stay. We had a DL view, which was the only nice thing about our room. We had a view of the Matterhorn, monorail, and California Screamin'. The freeway/Harbor Blvd noise was unbearable, we could literally hear it all night long. When we turned on the A/C it was so noisy, it sounded like there was an airplane in the room! The beds were very hard, pillows were thin, and so were blankets. We did get extra pillows and blankets, but it was kind of ridiculous to sleep with 3 pillows each! DH also didn't like the fact that the hotel was on a major road, rather than inside a resort area like in WDW. That part didn't bother me, though.

-We hated the fact that a lot of rides did not have wait times posted, pretty annoying if you've never been there and have nothing to compare the size of a line to, just wait endlessly.

-Some attractions that we weren't impressed with: Mulholland Madness (just jerky and painful, not fun), Enchanted Tiki Room (we love WDW's, so we thought we'd like this one even better, but no).

-We had bad experiences at 2 out of 3 of the Disney sit down restaurants that we tried. Yamabuki was just really awful. The miso soup had no flavor, either did the ginger dressing on the salad. We received half of our dinner sushi rolls with our appetizers and then it took 20 minutes to get the other rolls, which were so bad we couldn't eat them (and DH will eat pretty much anything). We were really looking forward to trying Blue Bayou for the atmosphere and food. The atmosphere was great, but the food definitely was not. We split the andouille sausage stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer and ended up with meatballs plopped onto mushrooms. :confused3 I had a pork dish, which was very bland, but it did come with some very tasty potatoes. DH had steak and shrimp. Also pretty bland. We had a very nice breakfast at Goofy's Kitchen, though. Despite Disney losing our PS, we were still seated quickly and enjoyed the variety of foods. The Mickey waffles, enchiladas, and french toast were some of our favorites.

-The price of counter service food is outrageous at DL! I know it's no bargain at WDW, but $8.29 for a burger and fries at Taste Pilots is crazy! :earseek: We did enjoy the bleu cheese burgers there, as well as the sourdough bread bowls in the Pacific Wharf area.

-We did the Fantasmic dessert buffet, and I have mixed feelings about it. It was not "worth" $53, but I don't regret doing it. Waiting forever with zillions of people is not fun. When we went to the Disney Gallery area we were unsure as to exactly where to go, so we asked a CM who led us to the back stairs near Pieces of Eight and were told to wait for someone to escort us. We got there early (9:45 for the 10:30 show), so we thought nothing of it. Another family who had buffet tickets showed up there to wait also. We were waiting and waiting until finally at 10 after 10, we asked why it was taking so long. We were told we were at the "wrong" spot, no apologies. Anyway, the desserts were nice, and they make great hot chocolate! The viewing was very good, but I don't see the big fuss over DL's Fantasmic. The only thing I thought was better was the increased firework use during the show. I thought DL's and WDW's versions were pretty much equal.

-The parks were pretty crowded, we thought it would be emptier, but we found out that a lot of CA schools were on Spring Break. We used the touring plans from the Unofficial Guide and did pretty well, though.

-Early Entry was a joke. The lines for DL at early entry time were stretching almost to California Adventure! We headed for Peter Pan only to have it break down on us when we were next in line. By the time we left the queue area, early entry was nearly half over. :sad2:

-Of course there was a lot of stuff that we did like, it wasn't all negative, you know! We loved DCA's version of TOT, much cooler than MGM's. The Aladdin show was terrific, I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed it. We did the wine tasting and really enjoyed it, it was nice and relaxing. California Screamin' is a great coaster, you don't even really get banged around too much on it. D.U.H. was hysterical! It was just like being at Comedy Warehouse in WDW. We saw them 3 times over the course of the trip. I loved Alice in Wonderland, one of my favorite Disney movies and they did a great job with the ride. Tom Sawyer Island is much nicer at DL. At WDW we get kinda bored, but at DL we spent a lot of time exploring the caves. Loved the barrel bridge! Peter Pan's Flight is better at DL. The opening bedroom scene in particular as compared to WDW's just blows it away. We really liked the Grand Canyon and dinosaur scenes (reminded us of Ellen's Energy Adventure) on the railroad, very cool! Indiana Jones was awesome!

-The outlet store was great. I got a hoodie for $12, marked down from $38. I also got a v-necked shirt for $12 that they're still selling in the parks for $26. One of the best deals was the 8 oz boxes of assorted Mickey chocolates were selling for $6 plus buy one get two free. Guess what I brought back to the office? :smooth:

That's about it. I don't regret going on the trip at all (although DH does). I still had fun, it just wasn't what I was expecting. I'm also not trying to bad mouth DL, just be honest about my experience. :earsgirl:

Thank you for your review. I'm glad that DL wasn't a total bust, but I wish that things worked out better for you. There's a lot of magic at Disneyland, but how many things can go wrong in one trip? It seems a lot happened to you at one time, so it's understandable that you're disappointed with your experience.

The Outlet store is on the corner of Harbor & Orangethorpe, about 5 miles north of Disneyland.

DUH is a comedy group that performs on the street in front of the Animation Building. I always hear great reviews about it.

The Character Warehouse that sells DLR merchandise.

I'm glad you gave your honest opinion. DL can read your post from a real & honest experience and perspective. And if they were to improve on certain things, they can certainly refer to your comments. It's true comments like these will drive DL to strive for higher guest satisfaction.

(it's 11:10 pm so if my post did not make any sense it's because i should really get some rest) :rolleyes1

First of all, thanks so much for an honest report. Glad to hear about the things you loved. I wasn't sure about D.U.H., but I guess I will be adding it to my list of "must-do's". And I was really glad to hear that the Unofficial Guide's touring plan worked well. We will be going during a very busy time and I plan on using the touring plan, at least on one day.

Secondly, sorry to hear about your experiences at the HoJo. But as far as the traffic noise goes, I'm a bit surprised that you didn't at least anticipate it. If you look at any map of the area and/or various pictures of the HoJo, you can see that there is a MAJOR highway right behind the hotel and, of course, Harbor Blvd right in front. We are staying there this summer. I have already done some reading and research to figure out which building to request in order to possibly avoid some of the traffic noise. I am also considering bringing along a white noise machine... but we will probably need the A/C in July, so that should probably dull the sound enough!! We will be sure to request extra pillows and blankets upon arrival!!

Again, thanks for taking the time to post your experiences at DL. We are also WDW-ers who are experiencing DL for the first time this summer. It is sure to be an interesting trip!.....................P

We actually prefer the highway noise at HoJo's .. we have always lived in aprtments close to freeways so we need the noise to sleep better.. I hate going to my parent's house for overnights as they are the only ones within several miles on lake property. Complete dead silence rattles my nerves! :rotfl:

I agree about Blue Bayou.. food is "eh" but the ambience makes up for some of that.

We go to Character Warehouse every time now.. plus there is IN and OUT burgers nearby! I hope the store has lots of NMBC stuff when we go - we scored last year with some cool ornaments, mini snowglobe. Hope they have a good deal like the chocolates- would love to have those for the ladies at work! :love1:

swankybeth - I'm sorry you were disappointed in DLR. It's hard not to get spoiled and have certain expectations after going to WDW, especially in terms of the food and lodging. They are really very different.

I've never stayed at HoJo for some of the reasons you've quoted. I've been tempted to reconsider, but your review has helped validate my concerns. The proximity to the freeway concerns me; this is probably something that affects some people more than others, and may affect some rooms more than others (I once stayed at the Sheraton, and requested to be moved since by original room had a lot of freeway noise; I was moved to a very quiet room). Also, even though HoJo gets great reviews from this site and some others, it gets pretty mediocre reviews from others. It's only 2 diamond from AAA. Did you at least appreciate that you could stay for around $100 bucks a night without having to take buses and monorails to get to the park? Just like WDW, I'm afraid you have to pay in $ and/or quality to be close to the parks.

I've been curious about Early Entry... What day did you go? Did EE seem to impact the crowds for the day? When did you arrive at the entrance and how lond did it take to get inside? Aside from the bad luck at PP, how were the lines for the other rides during EE? Years back when they had EE, it was heaven---but as it became available to more people it eventually it got too crowded and was much less special.

Pjilla-We did know that HoJo was very, very close to the freeway, but we honestly thought it wasn't that big of a deal since so many people love staying there trip after trip. We kind of assumed that once the balcony door was shut, we wouldn't hear it that loudly. Obviously, we underestimated how noisy it would be!

CalGal-We definitely appreciated the price, which was on par with a WDW value resort. We didn't think it was worth it to spend $250+ on a Disney hotel since everything is so close. After experiencing it for myself, I would recommend staying onsite if one can afford it.

We did early entry on a Thursday. We were at the gate at around 7:40-7:45 am. Our line in front of us wasn't too bad, but behind us, :earseek:. We were in the park by just a couple of minutes past 8. The other lines besides Peter Pan were okay. I wouldn't call them short, but not outrageous either. The crowds for the day actually didn't seem to be affected by early entry. To us it seemed like about the same. :confused3

Funnygarcia-We hit the In-n-Out burger near Character Warehouse on the same day that we shopped. We were excited to try the burgers, and they did not disappoint. We also went to Sonic later in the week, which is one of our faves, but they don't have them in NY. :sad1:

I am terrible with north/south directions...is that towards the I-5 or away from it if I were to start out from the Best Western Park Place Inn?

Going from the BW PPI & other Harbor Hotels, turn right, and go past Howard Johnson and the I-5 .... Continue on to the crosstreet Orangethorpe. Turn right at Orangethorpe & go down probably 1/2 a block or less to get to the character warehouse. If you were to cross Orangethorpe, on the left side is an In and Out hamburger that so many people rave about.

You commented on food prices. Taste pilots is one of the most expensive counter service. Not sure why. However did you check out prices outside the parks. I have found that food in CA is generally more expensive than most other places. DLs food inside the parks, is actually cheaper than eating inside Knotts, Sea World, Legoland, the nearby waterparks, or Universal. I always warn people, it cost more to eat here than WDW.

Donna

We were at DL last year during spring break and WDW this year during spring break. After crunching the numbers, DH and I agree that food is more expensive in DL/CA than in WDW.

At WDW this year, we used the Disney Dining Experience Card which saved us 20% off so many counter-service and sit-down restaurants. As a result, our meal costs at WDW for a family of 4 averaged about $80-100 per day (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in between). At DL, there are no discounts to take advantage of (that I know about), except for the AAA 10% off at Goofy's Kitchen. We would average about $120-150 per day for a family of 4.

Sorry you had a less than fantastic trip...but on the upside, it sounds like you did really well at the Disney outlet store!

WoW! It was that noisy even after you were prepared! Guess I had better invest in that white noise machine. We live in the BOONDOCKS and have ZIP, ZERO, NADA traffic on our road (which only had 3 houses). So any amount of traffic will sound loud to us! Hopefully (and probably) we will be so exhausted every night that we would be able to sleep through a freight train! Thanks again for the heads-up!.................P

Some interesting, and, it appears, pretty fair criticism.

We stayed at HoJos and didn't notice the noise at all. I live in a VERY quiet street and cannot sleep if there is any noise, yet, didn't notice the freeway at all. (And we also had a Disney view room) so I'm a little perplexed by this.

I agree with you about the food though. We had a very nice meal at Blue Bayou (not as good as some here declare, but definitely enjoyable) but I'm always surprised at the people here raving about how good the food is within Disneyland. It seemed to us that at places like Taste Pilots or Plaza Inn it was standard, overpriced fast food, and for the most part, pretty ordinary.

However, I think the crucial factor is timing - we went in December when the place was almost empty, hardly ever queued, and and a wonderful time. I really think timing, and the size of crowds, is the single biggest factor affecting enjoyment of a Disney holiday.

That is exactly what happened to us. We did early entry on Thursday, April 21 and I was with my Daughter, Niece and Nephew in line for Peter pan when the CM said that one of the ships was making a funny noise, so he decided to call and have someone check it out. We were in the front of the line, next to get on. He did give us front of the line passes to use later in the day.

fanofpan-We must have been right near you in the line, we also got the passes, which was nice, but it still wasted half of the EE time!

I guess it's everyone has different opinions. I hate the Tiki Room version at WDW & love Disneyland's original version. And Mulholland Madness is jerky, but it doesn't bother me. But Primeval Whirl at AK, that is one jerky coaster :earseek: ! And I think the TOT at MGM is better than DCA. I like how the elevator moves forward at MGM. It doesn't do that a DCA.

I agree with you about the food prices, but that is how it is at all Southern California theme parks. The 1st time I went to WDW, I thought the food was a bargin :earboy2: !

haha that made me laugh...I am the same way...I have to have noise when I sleep...I love the noises from the ac in the rooms...the only thing I hate is the beds in most places...but next week we are staying at the Sheraton...those beds better be as good as they make them out to be...
