Thoughts on Engagement Ring debate?

If my BF were to propose without a ring, I'm not sure I would think he was serious. And I can just imagine the talk around my side of the family (they're not always the kindest.) Probably something like, "Well I won't hold my breath for that wedding. Hope she knows what she's getting herself into." So I can definitely understand where the OP's friend is coming from.

But...I don't think I'd demand a diamond ring. If he went to the jewelry store, bought a ring that was pretty but didn't spend a fortune, I'd still say yes. I would want a ring, I wouldn't care if it wasn't a diamond ring.

I think that a man giving an engagement ring sends the message that he is serious and that he has thought over the issue, rather than just spontaneously jumping into it.

ITo each their own, but I don't think someone who doesn't want a ring is "less" engaged than someone sporting a boulder on their finger.

But that's it - to each their own. If the OP's friend feels strongly that she wants to be traditional, and have an engagement ring, and her bf doesn't care enough about her to get her one, then that would be a red flag. There are many times I might do something that DH wants, because it's important to him, and the reverse is also true.

In life, everyone has different priorities. Some people lease their vehicles because they like having new ones, some buy and drive them into the ground. Some people forgo vacations to have a larger home. Some people eat out a lot for convinience. Some people have big fancy weddings, some people elope. There is no right answer.
