Thoughts - new experience with job interview.

I left my last position in August to begin homeschooling my children, but had previously had a resume posted on a job site. I have been contacted for a part time position which is something entirely new for me. I've never had a prospective employer contact me before, I had always been the one to apply for positions I was interested in.

Do you think this suggests that the company is less desirable to work for because they are actively recruiting in this way rather than posting a position and having applicants contact them?

It is a small (8-10 employee) medical office looking for a PT book keeper. I am thinking that if they are flexible, this could fit nicely for us - I have wanted something PT outside the house for some number of hours per week.

Absolutely not. Yes, it is very possible this is a "less desirable" place to work, but I don't think the way they contacted you is an indication of that.

I'd be flattered. Any company who posts a job listing is going to undoubtedly get hundreds of applicants. They went looking for a quality person. They found you. Again, I'd be flattered.

So many businesses out there use networking and cold calling to find new employees (people who are already employed, and the new company is hoping to steal them away from the old company)...at least this is done regularly in the oil & gas business.

I wouldn't give it a second thought as being less desirable. Just the opposite, actually. IMHO of course.

Back in the day when fax machines were still used, the office I worked in ran out of paper and had to turn off the machine the first day a job was posted. It was crazy how many people were applying. And then that mound of resumes needed to be read.

I like the idea of being able to do a search by experience and key words and come up with a handful of highly desirable candidates. I think technology is helping in this case and I would be glad that I came up in their search. :)

My BIL was not even looking for a different job and was approached by a company that found him on linkedin...he's been there a couple of years, it was a large pay increase and the benefits are kind of ridiculous. So no, I wouldn't assume it means anything bad about the company.

Thanks for the responses everyone. As I said this is outside of anything I have experienced before. It was new enough for me to upload my resume rather than sending it out in response to job postings. Hmm...guess I'm aging myself here.

I'm glad to hear of positive results from this kind of approach.

If it was for a sales position, I would have said it's probably less than desirable, but for bookkeeping? I think that sounds legitimate.
