Starting Thursday (8/13/15-8/19/15) Giant Eagle will be having a deal on Giant Eagle gift cards. You buy $100.00 worth of cards, and get a catalina that prints out for $10.00 off your next order. You can do this an unlimited number of times, but only 5 per transaction. The Giant Eagle gift cards can then be cashed in on regular gift cards (including Disney/Southwest) or used for groceries. You can even hold on to them for awhile, until gift cards you want are double fuel perks. We figured it out and with the 10% back from the catalina, the 6% back on our Amex and the 12% when fuel perks are double, that is a savings of 28% off of every $100 that we will spend.

What is a "catalina"?

those are the coupons that print on receipt paper at the register when you check out.

Thanks for the heads up, OP! I don't have a rewards credit card, but the 10% bump on groceries is still awesome, plus regular fuel perks from $100 purchase still ends up being an extra $4 in savings for my van's monster gas tank.

I have never heard the term "Catalina" in regards to those coupons. Learned something new.

I also read that some people are able to use the GE gift card to buy another GE gift card and keep spending that same $100 but generating a new $10 catalina each time. On the other hand, I have also read reports that some GE's are now posting signs that you cannot use a GE gift card to purchase another GE gift card, so I'm sure this is a YMMV situation. I don't think I would even attempt it at my store, but still a great deal for purchasing other gift cards! GE sells Target gift cards, so I guess you could buy a $100 GE gift card, get the $10 catatlina to save on grocery purchases, then buy a $100 target card, then use that on Target.com linked to your red card and purchase a $100 Disney card for an additional 5% savings on top of everything else....

Just so I understand this...Can I buy a GE gift card to get the $10 coupon & fuel perks, then use the GE gift card to buy Disney GC to pay off trip? Can you buy GC's with a GE GC? So confused!

Thanks, Lisa

Just to clarify...You do not get fuelperks for buying a Giant Eagle gift card. In theory, you get the fuelperks when you spend the GE gift card.

Also, I do not believe that you are allowed to buy GE gift cards with GE gift cards. I think when you check out buying a GE gift card, the pay with option for GE gift card is disabled.

The stores in my area (Austintown, Ohio and Boardman, Ohio) are allowing you to roll them to other Giant Eagle gift cards.

Yes, you can purchase retailer gift cards with Giant Eagle gift cards. You get the Fuel Perks when you purchase the retailer gift card.

Is the $10 coupon only able to be used on groceries? GE is not a place we choose to shop so it may not be worth it for us

I have one answer and one question...

ANSWER:Per what can it be used for (since I am holding one)...Must present Giant Eagle Advantage card with coupon. Excludes purchase of prescriptions, gasoline, convenience store items, tobacco, cigarettes, alcohol, gift cards and other items prohibited by law. Not valid on dairy items in PA. Not valid with any other offer. Not subject to doubling. Coupon is worth no cash value.

QUESTION: What I was expecting to see was "One coupon per transaction" but that is not there. So, can you use more than one? For example, if I go shopping and my total is $50 (assuming none of the excluded items) can I use 5 $10 coupons? Please let me know. Thanks.

I was just there this afternoon and they told me one per transaction.

That was not the answer I was hoping for. :) So I called the Giant Eagle customer care line. Spoke with Valerie. She should there is no per transaction limit. You should be able to use as many of the coupons per transaction as you like. (Don't mean to contradict. Sorry.) Since we are going to have a couple of these, I am really hoping to use them together in one transaction.

Good to know -- might have been my cashier. :)

Giant Eagle is over price compared to WalMart. I went in to GE last week only needed to get a few things and I happened to be at Target which is next door other wise I would have just gone to Walmart. Well 3 of the items them I knew the price was lower at Walmart. Went there the next day and yep saved myself $7 by not getting it at GE. Plus half the stuff at GE is either expired or about to expire. I need yogurt and townhouse crackers. The crackers were expired by a month and that was not the only box on the shelf that was expired. Looked at the yogurt and it had expired two days prior. So be careful shopping there and watch your dates.
So the ten dollar deal may not be as good of a deal as it seems if the product prices are higher.

And no you don't get fuel perks when you spend a GE GC. When they came out with fuel perks a few years ago that is what everyone was doing. Well GE put the cobash on that once they found out what people were doing.

This is not true anymore. Unless you are at one of the privately owned Giant Eagle's that make their own policies. Giant Eagle's policy is that there is no limit on the number of catalina's used in one transaction. The back of this one states 1 per purchase, not one per transaction. That means you must have one item for each of the coupons used. I personally used 11 in one order yesterday. ((We have a Disney trip next month and are remodeling our house so I bought a ton of them to transfer into Disney and Home Depot cards.)

I wish our Walmart stocked items. 75% of the shelves are empty at all times in the grocery department.

I buy 90% of my stuff at Giant Eagle, but I also stock up on sales, use coupons and a reward card that gives me 6% back on grocery stores, but only 2% back at Walmart. Like everything else, YMMV.

And you don't get the FP when you purchase the Giant Eagle gift card, but you do when you cash it in. You can spend it on another retailer gift card or groceries. I am saving several of the ones I bought for when they have the double fuel perks deal before Christmas and I will cash them in then for retailer gift cards to buy Christmas presents with.

Do You know if I go to giant eagle today and buy the giant eagle cards, can I go back through the checkout immediately and buy he Disney cards with them? Or does it take a while to activate them? I saw this promotion but didn't know you could buy gift cards with a giant eagle gift card. This is an awesome promotion
