Those who've had swine flu

DD - 6 has been in bed since Monday morning with something. Docs said neg. on regular flu and strep tests. She has high fever, cough, achey, diarrhea. Doc said they weren't even testing for swine flu and only prescribing Tamiflu if underlying conditions. Sent her home said to give her Tylenol and push the fluids. .:confused3

Today is day three so hopefully it will ease up today.

My ds (7) was fine Saturday-he went to his soccer game, on a playdate, then to spend the night with my mama. At 5am Sunday he was up coughing for what my mama called a croupy cough, so I picked him up, gave him dimetapp and he went back to sleep and was whistling through his nose and not breathing right so I called the afterhours ped nurse to get an asap appt. The peds open on Sunday at 2pm and I got there way early (#3 in line-when I checked out, line was wrapped around and only 3 empty spaces in a large parking lot). Dr said my son had the croup AND bronchitis and gave him 12mg of steriods b/c his throat was closed up and prescribed antibiotics that start with a Z. He also told me to continue giving him dimetapp like I did earlier, just 1 1/2 tsp instead of the 2. I kept him out of school Mon & Tues and brought the secretary the dr's note and picked up ds's homework when I picked up dd from school for dh so ds didn't have to go outside in the rain. The secretary said she just got over bronchitis, lasted 14 days, and gots of stuff was going around the school so I need to keep him out at least what the dr's note said (2 days).

Well, dd (9) was extra irritable Saturday and Sunday my mama said. Monday morning before school she was actually crying because dh ate the last piece of pumpkin cookie Sunday. After we picked up ds's homework I was bringing her home and she was teared up in the backseat-over that cookie again. I got her home and noticed her face was beet red and she was burning up. I gave her 2tsp of kids tylenol and went back to work (around 3pm). I got home at 5:30pm and she was still asleep. Later on she was in her room and dh heard her bawling again (so not like her) and again over a cookie. I emailed her teacher to let her know I thought dd was sick so I was keeping her out Tues. In her reply she said that 3 kids were out Monday. Totally different symptoms that her brother.

Both kids said they felt fine today so I sent them to school. Both of them had regular flu shots a couple weeks ago. I haven't had mine yet. This morning I woke up sweating hot as heck with a fever around 4am, my throat is sore and itchy, my head hurts, my right ear hurts on the inside, and my bones are achy. Two guys at my work are feeling bad as well out of six of us. I don't know anyone who has had the swine flu personally, but all the other junk going around so fast is crazy too.

We just got word. They are admitting my DS11 to the hospital for the flu. His oxygen is low and his asthma has flared up. This came on so sudden. He was fine yesterday.

:hug:Prayers for you all.....

My DS11 has a SERIOUS history of asthma. I can always tell by his cough if its gonna be a flare up with his asthma. Yesterday evening he was fine. I made taco's for dinner, they were a little spicy, so it sent him to the bathroom after dinner. Around midnight, he woke us up saying his chest hurt. When I got to him, I touched him and he was burning up! I took his temp. and it was over 102.2. This just came out of no where! There was no cold like symptoms, no weezing, but he was clearly ill. I got him calm, he stopped complaining of his chest, but he said his head hurt. About 2 hours later, he was settled, I took his temp. again, and it was down to 101.8. He also has a mild case of diarrhea. We were able to go back to bed. This morning, is temp is back up to 102.6. We have a doctor's apt. this morning. I dont know what to think. My boy actually asked me last night if he was going to die. Of course I assured him he was going to be fine, but at this point, I just dont know what to think.

Please keep him in your thoughts today!

Please take him to the ER if he has trouble breathing!

Actually...scratch that...if he thinks he is going to die...and he doesn't normally say things like that...take him now.

I am just curious - are your peds still prescribing Tamiflu?

The docs around here won't prescribe it any more unless you are extremely high risk.

They said that there are signs of H1N1 becoming resistant to Tamiflu, so they are cutting back on precribing it.

Just wondering if that is becoming more common?

Doc's around here are only giving it for underlying conditions-DS14 has asthma and generally ends up with pneumonia with anything respiratory so he got Tamiflu.

I was another one of those "don't bother to go in unless you have a chronic condition" type people, but I started feeling bad Monday afternoon, called yesterday, dr couldn't get me in until this a.m. I have a history of sinus infections, but for the first time today was diagnosed with sinus infection, double ear infection, and the start of pneumonia (which I've NEVER had). Dr said it was good I came in so the pneumonia was caught before it worsened. She said this is starting off to be a season like none other for seemingly HEALTHY people to get really sick really fast.

Hugs to all my fellow sickies!

Terri

My kids had positive Influenza A & B swabs Monday. Because they had seasonal flu vaccines 3 weeks ago and Swine Flu is the strain running rampant here, it is assumed it was Swine. They have no underlying conditions, but were both prescribed Tamiflu. It was a HUGE undertaking to find it--literally called or went to 10 pharmacies before tracking it down. There is no suspension to be found around here. Some pharmacies have been compounding it from capsules to the tune of $130. Thankfully, we were able to find a pharmacy with the 30 mg capsules and they are tiny, so both of my kids were able to swallow them. No need for the liquid meds. Phew. Capsules are just $30.

Both of mine are on the mend, thankfully, but I've been told to watch out for returning symptoms once you think they are better.

Please let us know how your hospitalized son is doing!!! HUGS!

Thanks guys for the kind words! It really means a lot!

My boy Isaiah slept through the night. His fever hasn't broken. Its still up to 102. Whe had a doctors apt yesterday morning. The doctors checked his chest told us he was weezing really bad. His oxygen level was at 89. I'm told that's low. The doctor rushed him to a childrens hospital. As soon as we got here he started throwing up. So they set up an IV. The good news is his oxygen is normal and he's still weezing, but his chest isn't as tight. So I know it could be worse. My boy is strong. He has had asthma since he was a baby,he's tough he will fight this. They started him on Tamiflu last night they tell me twice a day for 5 days. I'm just worried about the fever.

Thanks again for the love guys! I'll keep you posted on Isaiah's progress!

Fever is your body doing its job. Don't worry about that part of it. In fact, our pediatrician asks "Dd they have a fever" but NEVER asks "How high?" He doesn't care what temp, he only cares if there is a fever and how the child is acting.

I wish your son a speedy recovery. As I sit here, waiting for my paramedic sister to drop everythign and come over to listen to my chest for me. I don't want to go to the dr. so need to know if it's just bronchitis (most often is caused by a virus so no need for antibiotics) or if it's moved into my lungs. In the meantime, I am using my inhaler (that I only have because I got sick and had one prescribed in May) every 4 hrs.

Cross your fingers I can just stay home!

Glad your son is better. I had to search for this thread to come find out and I am so glad he seems to be fighting this off!

Hugs to you guys and continued prayers!

Yikes. That doesn't sound so good. I know you want to stay home but I'm kind of hoping your sis encourages you to go to the Dr. Better safe than sorry and from what I hear this thing can take a bad turn quickly. I hope you are feeling much better asap:flower3:

::yes::

She is right. I hope you end up getting checked out by your medical provider.

We just got Isaiah home. His fever broke around 10 this morning, so they wanted to make sure he was keeping the fluids down. The took him off the IV and gave him solids again. He's been doing great all day. He asked for Mickey D's on the way home, so that's always a good sign!
