Those of us in possible Frances path...what are you doing to get ready??

But I just read that if your garge door fails, your roof will go.

WHAT???? That is scary!!!!! We have little windows on ours also and the house is only 6 years old!!!!! What can we do? Does anyone know of something you should do to secure your garage door?????????

Well they just closed the schools for Thur and Fri in Broward county. And lucky me just went back to work today after being off for the last 2.5 wks........dang picked the wrong week. Oh well!!
On Mon I went to Wal-Mart and got about 9 gallons of water and lots of other drinks and snacks for my DS. Also picked up another flash light and some batteries.
I guess we all are in a waiting game to fine out just where this thing is going to go.
Everyone stay safe and please if you can check back in afterwards to let us all know that you are OK.

We're in Altamonte Springs and it looks like it could come right over us. I just got home from Walmart and I am sitting here with a beer, and I don't drink. It was a mad house. Luckily I have about 4 cases of water and some can goods. The store was out of can goods, I mean there was not a can of spagettio's in the store. We have some batteries left over from Charley. We never lost power with Charley but I fear the worst this time. And we are supposed to be leaving on a DCL cruise on the 9th, cross my fingers it still happens. Good luck to all the Floridians out there, praying for all of you.

P.S. Any spelling errors are due to Bud Light:D

I am in Orlando (Winter Park area). I have food, water, batteries and candles, so I am good there.

I just do not know if I should stay or if I should go. I just moved here from Colorado so I am not real familiar with hurricanes except Charley. I keep hearing this will be much worse.

The apartment building I live in did not get any real damage from Charley ( a few screens and roof tiles) so is this an indicator that my building holds up well?

Is it okay to say that I am a little bit scared right now?

Sending you a PM

Sending the dogs and cat to my inlaws who live in Northern Florida inland, we are boarding up our windows, doors, garage, etc and bagging up what we can and placing it in space places in our home, we got renter's insurance signed and effective TODAY, we are packing up a weeks supply or so of clothes, blankets, pillows, meds, etc. And most of all praying and hoping this thing doesn't hit anywhere and takes a turn north. ::yes::

North Florida...Just south of Jacksonville in Clay County...We bought water and canned goods yesterday...already have plywood for all windows they will go up depending on landfall. Have tarps for roof damage, large water containers for non-drinking
div83.gif
I place the large plastic storage containers in the bath tub then fill them up with water...if you just fill up the tub with water, most of the water will drain out over a day or two...four gas tanks for additional gasoline, cooking stove with fuel, manual can opener, first aid supplies, bug stray, cash, paper plates, cups, plastic eating utensils and paper towels. I hope I'm ready:confused3

Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers. Please do all that you can do to stay safe. Be sure to check in and keep us posted on how things are going with you! I am sorry Mother Nature is not being very nice this year.

PLEASE BE SAFE!!!!

Don't forget to get some CASH!!!

The ATM's won't work if the power goes out!
Here in Fort Myers, power was off for DAYS after Charley!

Water, Ice, Generators & Gas were the hardest to find after the storm.
If you can, pack your freezer full of ice now, it will help keep it cold when the power goes out.

Be Safe & good luck to everyone out there!

The poster that started this thread: "we are heading to Lowes (god help us) for a garage door reinforcing kit, or some lumber to do it ourselves"

We live west of Orlando, north of MK.
I went to Publix last night. It was VERY busy. I have heard today was nuts.
After work I stopped in Dollar Tree. Great place to stock up on batteries. I had some from before, but bought even more. Brand names and for a $1 a package.
We have bottled water. But I also fill my frig with water and fill large bags with ice in the freezer.
For Charley, people were still able to buy items the day of. People are taking more notice now and there seems to be a panic look in everyone's eyes already. :(

One gas station across the street is totally out of gas. The other one across from it has HUGE lines of people waiting to buy gas. But I just drove a few miles east because I had to get my daughter from school and wa la.....no lines and plenty of gas:D
Why don't people think of looking elsewhere:rolleyes:

Palm Beach County schools let out at 12 noon on Thursday and no school on Friday.

I have not read through all these posts -- but here was a suggestion from someone.
They said to park a car in your garage with the car up against the door. And do the same on the outside with another vehicle.
This is to help keep the door from blowing and buckling in. They said if the door goes, so does the roof. :(

Charleston SC here. The news is telling us to be on standby to evacuate. One channel tells us to pack and leave, one channel tells us it will make land fall in Fl and we should stay. I watched Gaston come and go Sunday without power. Have not been through a major storm since Hugo. I know Fl is evacuating and should but when I think back to Floyd and all those cars on the road with people from Fl, Ga and SC it was a nightmare :( . Everyone please stay safe.

Ps: During Hugo I was at least 75 miles inland and it was not far enough. Long night and was at least 2 weeks before I got any power back. I hate hurricane season!

Well, we arrive late Friday night to move into the new house. Heavy sigh. Welcome to Florida.

We have a hotel booked in the Savannah area, as well as one booked in the Orlando area, and we'll make a decision around 3:00pm Friday as to which to keep.

We really don't want to get stuck in the Carolina's or GA, where it could end up being far worse.

We've bought a generator, gas cans, a camp stove, non-perishable foods, 20 gallons of water, plywood, although not enough to do all the windows regretfully, heavy duty plastic drop cloth rolls and a couple of tarps. We have a first aid kit, the home owners policy, cash, four or five flashlights and 40 some D cell batteries, a portable radio, a 70 quart cooler and a couple of smaller ones as well. I'm freezing juice boxes to use as ice blocks, and we'll try to find some ice at some point when we get coser. No sense filling the cooler in NJ.

We went through Floyd here in NJ, and I caught the end of Hugo in VA, but I have a feeling that this ones going to be a wild ride.

Maybe we're a little over prepared, but I'm hoping that if we wnd up dodging the bullet we'll be able to help others less fortunate out with some of the supplies.

We're also bringing pet supplies being donated to "any Florida Animal Shelter in need" by a New Jersey based animal welfare organization. I have a feeling we'll be able to find a home for those pretty fast.

Someone today told me that Orange Co Humane Society has HUNDREDS of pets that were dropped off due to Charley. They have not put any to sleep yet and hope not to. I hate to think what this one will do.

I had heard that. I know that Tampa was looking for foster homes for pets who had been dropped off because the owners had lost their homes and couldn't keep the pets. They were hoping to find foster situations until the owners could take them back. If I were permanently in FL I'd be happy to foster a dog, but at this point I can't do it. I'm already fostering a couple ferrets for a shelter here in NJ.

Everyone, and KEEP them Coming!::yes:: Anne lots of Hugs for you, and Welcome to Florida--see it with a Hurricane!;)

My son and his SO are part of the touring company of "Dora The Explorer Live" currently in West Palm and headed next for Ft. Lauderdale! My son called to say the hotel they're in is only rated for a cat 2 storm! I'm hoping the touring company and Nickelodeon won't want them in the middle of it and will order the cast and crew on busses or a plane, have them load the set and props and get the heck outta there but I don't know if they will.

Ok, worried mom vent over.
