Those don't look like any pirate hats I've ever seen!

The more I look at the hats on the pirates, the more ridiculous they look, like no other pirate hats anywhere. Am I ignorant of pirate millinery, or did Marc Davis design them to be so outlandish on purpose?

I think the red one is a bed pan. The black one looks to be some type of wearable booster seat. Both very practical for pirating. And, historically accurate I should add . . .
