I have an iMac less than a year old. I just bought an online-PSAT prep course for my DD. I am sitting here going through the technical requirements and the course company recommends using Firefox (we have Safari 4.0.2 right now).

So here's the maybe stupid-sounding question...
YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LAUGH, Ok?!?
Can I download the latest Firefox (Firefox 3.5) and then have the Firefox icon sitting down on my dock and not use it (I looove this latest Safari!!!) but have the Firefox sitting there if I want to? I always just use Safari most of the time, but I guess DD really might need the Firefox for this course.

Yes, I have Firefox (but just in my application folder, not on the dock) and use it on those very rare websites that Safari isn't happy with.

The Applications folder is in your Macintosh HD on your Desktop.

Ok, this is the next question (again, *no* laughing)... where is the application folder? How can I find it?

Click on your finder icon (square smilie face) on the bar on bottom of your screen (the dashboard). A pop-up box should appear. On the left-hand side, there should be a list with several headings (Devices, places, search for...). Under the heading "Places", applications automatically appears for me. If it doesn't for you, you can click on Macintosh HD under the Devices heading, and then you can click on the applications folder which should appear to the right.

Once you find the application you want, you can drag it down to your dashboard and then access it whenever you need it. I have both safari and firefox on mine...I find safari doesn't always work properly for some websites.

most computers have two browsers, most PCs anyway. since auto MS updates installs IE so it can then patch it. even if your default browser is something else.
