This stinks -- losing perks with partnership?

Each year, DW's firm usually sends out some type of gift for Christmas to everyone. Most years it's usually been a fruit basket (not that I'm complaining -- I love fruit).

This year, though, DW said they were doing something different. They were sending out Omaha Steaks to everyone (with an alternate choice to vegetarians ;) ).

I   Omaha Steaks!! :cool1:

No luck -- she just forwarded an e-mail they sent out to all partners. Because of IRS concerns, they've decided that the gift is only going to be sent out to employees of the firm. :guilty: Which means DW (and the rest of the partners) get stiffed. :badpc: :badpc:

That stinks! I had to laugh though because it works in the total opposite way here. You won’t see me getting any holiday hams—only the execs. LOL!

I read yesterday that Steve Ballmer, the CEO of Microsoft, doesn't own a Xbox 360 yet because a "free/gifted" Xbox 360 would be considered a violation of Sarbanes-Oxley!

Well, I know what my employees would say.

" *&%&$(&^*&)(&$%^*&)^$& bosses get enough perks while I'm slaving away here making no %&^*$^ money. I deserve my steak...they can buy their own ^^*$$@#&(* steak!!!"

;)

makes sense to me - as a partner, she is an "owner" of the company. and in reality, she would be paying for her own gift if she got it!

Yeah, it makes sense to me too -- it stinks (and Sen. Sarbanes owes me a steak dinner ;) :p ), but it does make sense. :)

I know, everyone thinks the exec's get all the gifts, etc. but they usually don't. When dh's old company was bought out by a new company all the employees were given a 10% across the board pay raise, nice, except the senior management, who had a year long wage freeze (employees didn't know that). Someone was griping about something at the company and saying something about only getting a 10% raise and that they bet the exec's got a lot more then that. I couldn't say anything but I really wanted to. They never got Christmas bonuses, etc. like the rest of the company got either.

That's awful. I would be very upset. If she is a partner, she should receive the gift. I don't understand?

I'm a partner at my firm, and we don't get any 'gifts' - we'd just be paying for them anyway.

As if Greece wasn't enough...{I am totally joking)

LOL...sucks to be the boss

(you should buy the steaks and send them to her)

Send them to her?? Heck, I was thinking purely of myself! ;) :teeth: :teeth:

That stinks!!!

Hey, where do you think OMAHA Steaks come from!?!?!

I bet it is those cornfields in Nebraska!!! ;) :rotfl2:

My husband is a partner in his business. If they were giving out steaks to the employees he would not get one -because he is not an employee he is an owner and he would be paying for them anyway because the profits wind up in his pocket.(and the other partners)
Does that make sense?
My DH's business gives out really good door prizes at the Christmas party. We are not eligible 1) It would be bad for morale if the partners won them
2) He is paying for the prizes anyway- it would be like buying them for himself with pretax money.
You can't buy yourself goodies with pretax money unless it is a legitimate business expense

I'm a partner in a law firm. We get no benefits whatsoever. Every dime of our health insurance, dental insurance, pension, etc. comes out of our pockets. Whenever we have a "free" day at Six Flags, yes, my family goes for free, but I pay $400-500 as my share of all the employees' families going, too.

This is one of the reasons why I will continue to work. DW figured that to stay on her insurance as a family, it would cost us $23,000 next year. :earseek:
