This poor family...parasites in lake...

That is terrible! The child is my son's age. It gives me a chill. Hopefully, his death will not be in vain.

awwww i hope he didnt die to painfully :((

I have a bad feeling in a few years this will be like an epidimic or something.

This is so sad. Such an innocent boy :( I know when I heard the podcast, I am passing the word to all I know. It was news to me being from the NE, I never heard of it, ever.

Pete said he was on a mission... I am glad he brought it to our attention. Thanks Pete!

That is so sad - it was something I had never heard of before the podcast :scared1:

We hired a boat from the Grand Floridian when we were there in July and the amount of kids we saw splashing about in the lake - it gives me the chills thinking about it :confused3

Is there any way they can test the water for this kind of thing? Seems like it should be an easy thing to test for, then we could all put our minds at ease about Disney's lakes and the water activities that go on there.

Any one know?

My understanding of this particular amoeba is that it can take weeks to grow and identify its prescence by that time said amoeba would be out of its amoeboid stage. Therefore, testing would not be prudent and elimination of said ameoba virutally impossible without upsetting the entire ecosytem thereby creating a whole set of new problems that could potentially be worse. I don't mean this to come across as codescending but any recreational water user in a warm environment should always assume that there are many microscopic organism be it parasite or bacteria are present. It is simple biology really..warm = bad bacteria add to that stagnent and you have a potentially lethal combination afterall Bacteria and other microscopic organisms such as viruses and parasites on average only take 50 years to evolve especially given such a coducive environment as warm Florida waters. Hense the need and use of on Disney's part of no swimming signs. Furthermore, it is highly unlikely to contract or be host really to such organisms by simple and/or brief contact via boating or other water sport activities which is why Disney continues to offer said activities.

So very sad. I can't imagine what that family is going through.

Sidenote: There evidently is also a strain of chlorine resitant parasites, Cryptosporidium out there that is found in chlorinated pools.

That is an excellent sidenote...Cryptosporidium is a perfect example of just how fast such organisms can evolve and why it would not be practicle to attempt to rid the Disney waters of every ameoba, parasite, bacteria etc..because such an effort would be quite frankly impossible and unpredictable. The best course of action as always is education the more people are knowledgable the more they will avoid dangers such as these (in theory of course). Also a clear case of how ignorance is not bliss and can in fact be deadly.

Does anyone have an idea if it is due to parasites like these that River Country closed??? I've always wondered...

My understanding is that River Country was closed because it was far less popular than Typhoon Laggon and Blizzard Beach....Also I am pretty sure that the fresh water that was used for the swimming hole was filtered which depending on the filtration method more than likely would have prevented the migration of parasites, bacteria..etc into the swimming hole.
