this past wed at animal kingdom??

I don't know, but I did read where an elephant was born last week at AK.

WHAT?!? the whole day? It's one of the few things there are to do over there. If it was closed and wasn't noted on the board out front of the park, I would be screaming for a refund. The park is barely more than a half-day visit as it is....

Wow Rob, you feel very strongly about this. I like AK alot and I've only seen about 1/2 of it now. (I've only been twice and both times we just did 1/2 days.) I'm hoping to see the rest of it this year!

I've stayed at AK from open to close on more than one occasion and still haven't seen it all. :(

the safari ride would not close due to this...the baby elephant, Kianga, won't be "on" the safari for a few months. (and she was born "back stage" in the barn)

If I went to AK and the safari ride was closed...I wouldn't demand my money back...I think that's a bit hars...there are plenty of attractions at AK IMO that are worth the admission price.

Just think about it for a second:
Safari
Dinosaur!
Primeval Whirl
River Rapids
Triceratop Spin (Dino Dumbo)

Are the only rides at the AK.

Tough to be a bug
Lion King
Tarzan Rocks
Flights of Wonder (bird show)
Jammin' Jungle Parade
are the only other "nahtazu" things to see over there to see.

so it is one of ten attractions, or one of five rides. If there wasn't a sign out front telling me it wasn't working, and I just spent $55 on a one-day one-park ticket to go in to the AK, I'd be pretty upset.

It's one thing if notice is given prior to entering, or it is down sporadically (ala Test Track), but for it to be down all day, with no notice given (if in fact this is the case), I'd be sure to mention my gripe to someone.

I certainly don't think of the "rides" as being the only things to do at AK - most of my time is spent enjoying the animals, the atmosphere and the landscapings. Everyone has different opinions on the parks, of course, but I actually think that the rides are a fairly small part of the enjoyment that I get from the AK. But, each to his/her own.

Even Disney knows that AK is not known for it's "rides" per se...that's why Expedition Everest is going in. Build a thrill coaster to get people in the door.

I find that wrong...I like AK the way it is...I like the slower pace of the park, I like speaking with the CM's from around Africa, I like learning about how they care for their animals and what not.

No, it's not for everyone...you just have to accept what the park is...if you don't like it for what it holds beyond 'rides'...go to MK.

Fair enough.

My opinion on it is, without the rides "I just spent $55 to visit a zoo?"
I love zoos (in fact I have a membership to the Philadelphia Zoo, America's first zoo), but I wouldn't spend $55 to visit once.

...now let's get back to the main question:
Why was the safari closed for most of the day last wednesday?

If I had paid $55 for a one-day/one-park ticket to DAK and found out right away that the safari wasn't available, I would leave fairly quickly and stop by Guest Relations and ask for a ticket to use at another park or to come back to DAK at a later date. And Disney would likely give me one. :D

However, if I paid $55 for a one-day/one-park ticket to DAK and did several shows, the parade, lunch, and all the other rides and THEN found out that the Safari was closed because it took me all day to get back there, then I wouldn't say anything and just go back and watch the tigers some more!

If I had a park-hopper, I would go somewhere else for that day and return the next day, asking at Guest Relations first, "Is the Safari running today?"

Oh ... and I have no idea why the Safari was closed! :p

:earsboy:

We were at AK last wed. and did the safari, didn't seem to be any problems at that time (probably around 10:00am) the only thing I noticed was the bridge you go over that usually rocks when you drive over it didn't move at all.

The Safari was down for several hours due to technical difficulties. With no way to estimate how long the down time would be for, it would be difficult to post such information at the tip board. Any Safari FP's distributed that day were being honored by all other FP attractions in AK.

It was a totally unexpected event that happened first thing in the morning, and I witnessed a lot of incredible teamwork that day among at KS castmembers and management, doing everything within our power to have us up and running again ASAP. I do believe we were operational again by around 1:30pm or so.

yeah i knew it was tech difficulty i just wondered what it was. as far getting our money back as you said it wasnt closed all day but by the time it reopened we were on our way to epcot so we just decided to skip it. i love animal kingdom and we got our moneys worth. still curious to what the difficulty was though. heard a rumor an animal was sitting on one of the ride vehicles and wouldnt move. who knows. thanks for all the posts though :)

  Can you imagine?? :p

There were some water levels that had gotten too high to drive through

As for paying $55 for 'a zoo' , isn't the Safari ride considered rather 'zooish'?

Last trip we didn't go on either of the trails to see the tigers or gorillas, and I missed them! Hopefully we'll be able to persuade DD13 that she doesn't have to dig up the entire fossil-dino in the Boneyard this year, lol! Last time, at age 11, she spent a full hour in there, digging, digging, and digging some more...

I was in AK on the 4th of July and we had quite a delay on line (even though we used fastpass) because an animal was sitting in front of a truck and wouldn't move. I wonder if it was closed due to something like that.

I don't think they'd have a problem refunding your money as long as you didn't spend a half day in the park riding all of the other things that were operating before expressing your disappointment. Sounds reasonable to me.
