I'm a brand new DVC member and am close to booking our first stay. My use year is August, so I have about a month to book or bank. I am looking at dates in early July, but depending on some things happening this summer there is a chance I would have to change the reservation dates. Since the points I'm using are 2025, if I had to change the dates later than July, would I lose the 2025 points and have to use the 2026 even though I booked with 2025 points? I hope my question makes sense. Tia

If you made a July 2026 reservation with your 2025 UY points, and cancelled it before your banking deadline, then you’d be able to bank those points and use them next year in your 2026 UY. If you cancelled the July trip after your banking deadline, those points would need to be used by July 31, 2026 or they would expire.

It’s a little tricky.

I try to keep my bookings in the first 8 or 9 months of our Sept UY. At most I’d book the first month after our banking deadline. Then I could still cancel and bank pretty close to the trip date, and if I missed that boat at least we’d still have a few months to try and reschedule before the points expired.

Okay thank you, I guess my confusion was in modifying vs canceling but maybe its the same thing when you do it, I just haven't ever done that.

A follow up would be, if I reserve a 2br but only end up needing a 1br, if I change it to a 1 br before the banking deadline I could bank the difference...but if I wait I would lose the extra points?

You’re welcome. Whether a reservation is modified or cancelled, the rules aren’t really different.

If you cancel/modify 30 days or less from check-in, points go into holding.

If you cancel/modify after banking deadline, those points will expire end of that UY.

If you modified/rebooked before the banking deadline, you could then bank the difference in points.

Eta - In the DVC system the 2BR is different inventory from the 1BR. Even though they do have lockoffs, we cannot drop or add a piece. I think some other timeshares allow that, but DVC does not. If you hold a 2BR, the only way you can modify to 1BR is if separate available inventory exists for the 1BR. Holding the 2BR doesn’t ‘hold’ the 1BR.
