This Newbie Has Questions!!!

Hello all!!
After 10 years of reading here on DIS I have finally made my own account and am ready to join in with conversation and share my WDW tories with everyone! However, I know almost nothing except on how to pick a thread and begin reading.... on that note, if you can answer these questions I would be very appreciative!!

My first question---- HOW ON EARTH DO I PUT ON A PROFILE PICTURE?!?!?
Second question---- I have become very fond of a certain DISer over the years and I would love to start up a conversation to express how much I enjoy reading about her trips. Is there a way to do so without just doing a 'reply' and making everyone and their mama see it?
Third & I think final question---- How do you begin chapters in a thread? I would like to do so because I find that when I read threads without the chapters it is just far too unorganized.

If you can help me I will be forever grateful as will my readers one day.

to the DIS - well, wecome to posting anyway.

To upload a profile picture, hover over your user name at the top right of the forum page, then click Avatar. You can then follow the instructions to upload a picture.

It is possible to send other DIS users a private message, but you need at least 10 posts before you can do that. Once you have 10 posts, click on their user name and click 'Start a conversation'.

As far as 'chapters' in a thread, do you mean titles? i.e. linking to spearate posts in one main post? If so, you need to create the post, then click on the post you want to link (there is a number with a hashtag in the bottom right corner of the post), copy the url in the address bar and type inthe main post what you want to call your chapter, i.e. chapter 1, then highlight the words, click the little chain icon above the post, paste the url into the box and click 'insert'. The words/chapter title will then become a link to that individual post. If you want to practice there is a technical forum where you can try these things out. Bear in mind that to do most things, like add pictures and links you need at least 10 posts

I am new too and when I hover over my user name I don't have anything that says Avatar. Am I doing something wrong?

to you too - are you hovering over your username at the top right of the screen. Not the one next to your post but right at the top. There are lots of options there.

I read in another thread that in order to change the avatar with the new changed you now need 10 posts. I previously had an account, but hadn't used it in about four years and no longer had everything needed for access.

Weird... I have 10 posts, but it won't let me PM or put on an Avatar. Any thoughts?

When did you reach 10 posts? There is a time-lag -- maybe about 30 minutes or so.

There isn't anything that just appears, you need to click on the person's suer name that you wish to PM and select 'start a conversation'. That should work.
