This may not be a popular opinion, but why is CA so insistent on getting Polanski??

he spent 42 days in jail for a psychiatric evaluation, prior to when he was supposed to be actually sentenced. You really think that 42 days getting a psych eval and a fine is a just punishment for the rape of a child? That's sickening.

If the victim wants the case dropped, why should society be going against her wishes? I never said it was a fair punishment, it is a cost effective way of concluding a 33 year old case with an uncooperative victim.

Ok by your reasoning, say there's a pedophile caught in Newbury Park, CA. The crime occurred several years ago and now the victim doesn't want the case pursued. There is a very good possibility that he/she has committed the crime more than once and with different children. I say this because pedophiles tend to be repeat offenders. So let him/her go to remain a threat to children in your area, after all, the victim we know about doesn't want to pursue it.
Oh and there's also a rapist, a murderer, and an armed robber who are in the same situation-their victims(the victim's family in the case of the murderer) don't want their cases to go to trial If the pedophile case isn't followed through, why should we follow through with these other cases.

He raped a child, it disgusts me that anyone thinks the state of Ca should just let it go.
So what if the victim is uncooperative? The legal system has a responsibility to prevent him from assaulting anyone else.

A pedophile cannot be cured. So what if his victim wants the case dropped. If he's free to molest another child, that's ok?
But has he? I would think if he had, this fact would have been brought up over and over by now.

We don't know if the judge was going to waiver on the agreed sentence or not. Polanski THOUGHT the judge was going to but that wasn't given. He didn't stick around to find out either way. The judge never got the oppertunity to sentence so we don't know if the plea deal would have been honored or not.

Have you read her testimony? She was 13. If someome did that to YOUR 13 year old daughter wouldn't you want them to serve more than 42 days and then live out a life of luxury in France.

He jumped bail and fled the country. But that's ok. It's been 30 years. I mean really, what's one guilty plea to child rape? He's a famous director. He's an ARTIST. He's a genius! His wife was bruitually murdered. That makes it all ok to drug and rape and sodomize a 13 year old girl. He was only 30 years older than her. Using power, influence and drugs to have sex with a minor...it was wild times!

Did I get them all? All the arguements for his freedom?

VOMIT! Seriously. The guy should be rotting in jail and have someone do to him what he did to that girl.

Excellent points. I agree with you 100%.

But has he? I would think if he had, this fact would have been brought up over and over by now.

I was wondering the same thing. Admittedly I was only a toddler when all of this happened, so I don't know that much about him or what happened. Was he known for this behavior prior to this incident, or have there been more accusations since he fled?

I am a champion of the law, so part of me feels that he should be made to pay for his actions.

HOWEVER, I'm more of a champion of the sovereignty of nations. A country is under no obligation to extradite anyone if their laws do not provide for that to happen. Say what you want about Mr. Polanski, but Switzerland & France are sovereign nations who should be allowed to run their countries the way they seem fit. If that means we don't play ball with them in the future, so be it, but I cannot fault those nations for standing up for themselves, and I can't stand people saying bad things about those countries for asserting their own laws within their own boundaries. What's even more sickening is that California and the USA, more than likely, have tried to make some sort of "deal" with Switzerland in order to change their minds. Sometimes, as a country, we feel the need to press our own laws/ideals upon the whole world.

Does that really matter? He was free to do it again, thats the point.
Well, that may be your point and the point of everyone else who leans towards torches, pitchforks and hangman's nooses whenever anyone brings up this subject (again and again - what? Is it sweeps week or something?). But it strengthens my argument that perhaps the facts have been played loose and fancy free for dramatic effect in order to activate the emotions of those who would be easily manipulated with a few choice words.

My opinion is that this case is 30 years old, the victim is punished each and every time it's brought up, and it's obvious that those who are fake vomiting here because they can't stand that Roman Pulanski hasn't been castrated yet don't truly care about victims of child molestation at all. They only care about the politically correct noises they're making to somehow prove how much they care about victims of child molestation. That, or the gnashing of teeth and expressing righteous indignation satisfies some sense of drama within them. Take your pick.

Back in the real world, I think the state of CA should probably drop this thing. It's been 30 years; there have been no other 'victims'; CA is bankrupt and should spend their money on helping the people living there now rather than going after 30 y/o dead cases; Pulanski will never be sentenced to any jail time; it's a lose/lose for everyone involved except for the masses in the media and on bulletin boards screaming for fresh blood.

So, the next time France is getting their butts kicked in a war, should we just leave them to their sovereignty? If other nations need to be pressed in order to accept the sheer vileness of pedophile rape, then shame on them. That is not about silly American ideals being forced on others, we are talking about basic human rights.

But has he? I would think if he had, this fact would have been brought up over and over by now.

Not necessarily. He could have paid off the people involved. Or they could be like the victim in this case and just want it forgotten and get on with their own lives, not caring that it could happen to many others.

This type of thing happens a lot. Especially when the victims are made to feel as though it's either their fault for it happening or they think nothing will be done about it.

It may not be brought up. Child sexual abuse by pedophiles is one of the most under reported crimes.
Even if he never did-unlikely as that may be- his rape of a child is ok.

If we choose not to aid France in a War, then that is our choice, and it is ours to make, alone. In fact we often find ourselves in situations we shouldn't be in because of our need to "police" the world.

The issue to Switzerland isn't about rape. I'm certain they have laws against rape in their country, and, if Mr. Polanski had committed rape within their borders they would be allowed to prosecute him for that. The issue at hand is extradition, and if they do not have a provision for that in their country's laws, then they should not have to bow to another country's laws within their own borders.

Which is exactly my point. If the man was/is a pedophile, and pedophiles cannot be cured, then in the 30 years since there would have been at least one more instance involving Pulanski. Good Grief - look at Michael Jackson and the hell he went through with his pedophelia. All the money in the world couldn't shut that stuff up. And Pulanski didn't have near the millions that MJ had.

I'm doubting that Pulanski is a pedophile. As I said, the facts have been twisted so much in the past 30 years that it's now just more drama so people can have some kind of justification for allowing the lizard brain to take over their higher reasoning functions.

Must be a slow news day.

My higher reasoning function is working just fine thank you. The man committed a crime against a child and then fled the country to avoid having to pay for it. That left him "free" to do anything he choses, whether it be rape another child, or sip a mochachinos in a Swiss Starbucks. It doesn't matter to me whether he is certified pedophile or just a one time child rapist, he belongs back here so that our justice system can deal with him accordingly and he can pay for what he did.

It doesn't really matter if he's a pedophile or not. He still hasn't been punished for the crime he admitted to doing. I don't call living freely in another country in the lap of luxury punishment.

No matter what you say or how you say it, the man has still gotten away with a vicious crime against a child.

Because the only reason he hasn't been extradited before now is because he's an award winning film director.

He took up with Nastassja Kinski when she was 15 and he was in his mid-40s. He raped his victim when she was 13 and he was 43. He later admitted he knew she was only 13, although he denied it at first. I'd say he likes them young. There is zero doubt in my mind that this was NOT an isolated incident and that he used his money, power and influence to do just what he wanted over the years. For crying out loud, the pervert around the corner in Anywhere, USA gets away with this stuff for decades because of shame and silence. Polanski???? He practically got a gold crown from Hollywood for his efforts. Why shouldn't he think he can get away with anything and everything? HE DID!

Some people will do anything to be associated with the movie elite. Including making their young teens "friendly" and available. A sort of currency, you might say. Sad, but true. It's still rape. And he's still scum.

Which brings me right back to the fact that you care less about the well-being of that child, now woman, than you do about your own righteous indignation and sense of wanting to get even somehow for something that NEVER had anything to do with you in the first place. The victim relives the nightmare and suffers each and every time this 30 y/o event is brought up. But whenever that is mentioned, the argument shifts to, "But he broke a LAAAAAAW!!" gnash gnash gnash, light the torch, pick up the pitchfork, kill the ogre, lather, rinse, repeat.

Why can't the trial continue without Polanski and reach a verdict and he be sentenced "in absentia"? Then we and he will know what will happen when and if he is returned to the US.
