This may be a dumb question....
Can you use points for any Disney resort? Let's say I want to go to All-Stars for 3-4 days to save $ or I just want to stay at the Polynesian? Is that possible?

Are those pts. listed anywhere? All I ever see are the DVC resorts.

Yes you can use your points on non-dvc disney hotels through the Disney Collection. However, its likely that it will use more points than a dvc resort (especially if you only get a studio in dvc resorts) - check out the point charts for the disney collection!

You can use points for MANY of the other resorts on property. All Stars/Pop Century are not included in the "Disney Collection" check out the member site and points charts for the "Disney Collection" to see the resorts available and the points for each.

I'm sorry...I'm not a member yet, but am planning on buying in....so I guess this was just something I thought about.....so it doesn't really save you pts.? I have a family of 6. (2 currently are 2 or under)

I don't have the numbers in front of me since I'm at work, but I remember talking with my wife last month saying that in a slow period, it was about the same or less points to be in a one bedroom, with kitchen and w/d, than to stay at a moderate resort per night. The DVC studio is even less points and comes with a microwave and half size fridge plus a few extra square feet.

the Polyn Garden Sun-thur (value season) 35 points per night

2-bedroom VWL sun-thur (value season) 30 points per night

the 2-bedroom is about 3 times the size of the Polyn

a studio VWL sun-thur(value season) 12 points per night - it is a little smaller than the Polyn room.

I had a similar question when we looked at DVC. There were certain non-DVC resorts (POR and AKL) which we loved and just couldn't imagine giving up. The knowledge that we could use our points there made me a little more relaxed about buying. Well, I just want to let you know that, although I never would have believed it, after my first DVC stay, I had NO desire to go back to regular hotel rooms. But you can.

Sorry didn't know you were a potential member.

As the other posters have said, the points for moderates is about the same as a one bedroom at a DVC resort. The DVC resorts ARE the BEST use of DVC points.

Just for the record, you cannot use DVC points for any of the value resorts, WL, BWI or the BC. You can use them to reserve rooms in any of the other WDW resorts.

P.S. I also think using DVC points at DVC resorts is the best/most economical use of points. It is nice to have other options, but as Simba's Mom said, I can't imagine wanting to after being in a DVC room.

don't forget that with a family of 6 you will have to reserve TWO rooms at the Poly.

Yes, you are allowed to pool hop to the Poly. Actually, the only places you can't pool hop to are AKL and BC.

Note from the previous post that the points required for a hotel room at one of the Disney Collection resorts is WAY more than the points you would use for DVC accommodations. The same is usually true for the other "outside" uses of points.

That's what Carol was talking about when she said you get your best value using the points at a DVC property.

Some consider maximizing the value of your points very important. That's why you will see DVC members talking about "cash nights" elsewhere, and you'll often see counsel to pay cash for cruises and rent your points to recoup the cash outlays.

Other people see DVC as prepaid vacations, and don't really care whether they are getting maximum value, as long as they are getting good value from their points.

Another case where perspectives differ and there is no right or wrong answer.

Uh...no, actually. You could go to the Poly pool...outside of a few blackout dates, subject to availability, and ONLY when you are staying on POINTS. No pool hopping if you're staying off-site or paying cash.

Pool hopping is a classic example of a member perk that you should NOT consider in making a buying decision -- because it is subject to change at any time. It's nice when we have it, and it's good to know it's there, and what the criteria are -- but don't bank on it, because it could be gone tomorrow.
