This just really annoys me!

I get the fat guys with hot wives thing but for the most part those are sitcoms that portray the guys as dim-witted buffoons so they have their own negative stereotype built in. I'm more talking about things like ads, most magazine covers, and the majority of actors in dramatic rolls. I have never seen, at least outside of a parody, people that look like John Goodman on billboards with underwear ads or in just about any clothing ads. Those are full of guys in pretty good shape just as ads for women's clothing are full of women in good shape.

That second is something I never understood. I don't understand why women's clothing isn't sized by measurement instead of size like some of ours is. It would get rid of the discrepancy between manufacturers and would get rid of the vanity sizing B.S. At the same time though it is often hard for me to find shirts that fit. Because they don't make a lot of shirts for guys that have a larger chest circumference than waste.

That is true. Having a personal chef, nutritionist, and trainer would sure help but I know plenty of normal working people who hit the gym and stay in shape (physical shape, not health). It is about making it a priority. If you don't want to that is fine, it can't be everyone's priority but there are people who fit the gym or running or swimming or whatever into their normal, average, everyday lives.

My niece has 3 kids. She home schooled, she was working on her masters, (magna cum laude, by the way) She cooked every night, and she ran every day, 5 miles. Still does to this day. IF there is a will there is a way. I am learning that.

I currently wear a size 2, but if I lost enough to wear a size 0, I would still be within the "healthy weight range" and not underweight at all.

Hah, I'm 5'10 and if I was a size 0 or 2 I think I might look funny! :rotfl:

Exactly! I mean, not that this was even my point of the post, but you are totally right. Anyone can do anything they want, if they want it badly enough. Its hard, and you have to be selfish, but it can be done. By anyone.

I mean, we have people on here posting pics of basketball players who yes, weight enough to be concidered obese, but are obviously in shape. What does that have to do with anything?? Of course there are exceptions to every rule, and that would be one of them - I didn't look, but shes also probably very very tall and that is another factor in the BMI (not that BMI has anything to do with my post either.....). It just dumbfounds me how people see and read what they want, and put a spin on it how they want. People took it personally, like I was actually LOOKING at them, and calling them fat. When in reality, I can't see anyone here, nor do I really know anyone here. So when you think about it, taking a post like this personally, and feeling attacked by someone who doesn't know you, and isn't talking to you or about you, kind of makes you wonder whats really going on inside them.

My main issue here is calling plus size people "real people" is almost giving permision to stay that way. When we should all be striving to be the best we can. If you feel that being plus size is the best you can be, then good for you. Or, maybe some people need to push themselves, to really see their potential. Get out of their comfort zone, and really see what they can do. I'm not saying the world should work to being a size 00, but start off being healthy, and the rest will follow.

Even finding a t-shirt that fits my chest area without having way too much fabric around the waist is pretty hard. With dress shirts a lot of the time they are too long. The hardest though are casual looking button down shirts that I can wear untucked. Finding the right combination of V-cut and length is pretty hard.

We all have our crosses to bear I guess, unless you pay to have every piece of clothes tailored or custom made.

BMI should never be used as gospel, it is one tool out of many to gage health. BMI doesn't take body composition into account, just measurement and weight. Since muscle weighs more than fat often time athletes, who tend to be most muscular, end up with an elevated BMI. The normal, sedentary adult though will usually have a more accurate BMI.

How about trying the younger adult clothes places? My son is 6ft 2in and he weighs about 148 or less. His pants size is 28 by 32 and he has broad shoulders to go with that lean waist. He wears Aeropostale and Abrocombrie and Fitch (sp). His t-shirts give him enough room for his shoulders but do not bag at the waist.

My husband, who is 6ft and weighs 150 gets his suits in a sport or European cut. He has the triangle shape too.

Really? Women who play professional sports that are a size 16+, they are not healthy, huh?

The weight charts say this lady is "over weight" :sad2: http://www.disabled-world.com/artman/publish/height_weight.shtml

She does look a little overweight to me. Not obese though.

Ok, maybe I shouldn't have used my past and current pant size in my OP. I simply ment health. Most people don't get into obese ranges because they are working out and eating right. Or is that wrong too??

Actually you can. Some women have PCOS and it is much, much harder to maintain their weight and to lose weight. They also gain weight in the belly like men do instead of the way most women do which is in the hips and thighs. Belly fat is more deadly.

I am 5'9 and a size 10/12. I run marathons now and I lift weights, mostly eat healthy, etc. I struggle to maintain this (I have PCOS) and my doctor says I am in perfect health....not a size 0 which would have me looking emaciated, I promise you. I get to a 7/8 and I start looking like a lollipop:upsidedow. However my UNDERWEIGHT husband and son for instance do not exercise at all, my husband will eat a large super supreme pan pizza by himself and still make some peanut butter jelly sammies. My 21yo son eats baconators with extra bacon for goodness sake, several times a day. That can NOT be healthy, but to look at them you would think they were in prime physical condition, six packs, lean physiques and all.

I think moderation is the key any thing done to the extreme in most cases is not good for anyone.

A muscular, toned woman looks overweight to you?

Good God, no wonder some women have major body issues. :sad2:

She is 6'1 and 201. She seems very muscular and fit, though.

Most women aren't 6'1" and athletes. THis is the other extreme. Americans are way too over weight. And you can be over weight for years before the health issues start showing up. My cholesterol is fantastic, but according to my DR it probably won't always be, also because of where most of the fat is on my body, I could very well develope diabetes. So yep, I am healthy now, but she strongly advises that I lose weight.

Women get very defensive as soon as someone says that maybe most of us are over weight. But it is true, weather anyone likes it or not.

I am asking this with the calmest, most even tone:

How am I spinning?

You know, Pink, I normally find that when someone shows hatred/prejudice towards a group of people, it is usually because they have personal issues and instead of dealing with those, they decide to take it out on others.

We ALL have something we struggle with regardless of how many Disers try to make others think they are the second coming of Jesus.:thumbsup2

And there are women who are thin that are very unhealthy too and that is true whether anyone likes it or not.:sad2:

Oh my goodness - Sweetie, calm down - Who have I attacked?!? Where did I call anyone a "unhealthy slob"? As FireDancer said, I'm just annoyed that the "new thing" is to call plus size women Real Women. Like, where do adverage size women fit in now?? I've worked real damn hard to get into a healthy weight range, and now I'm not even real!!!?? I did all this to become fake somehow??? How is that even fair?!?

And a huge congrats on your bloodwork. Its very important.

they are called "skinny *itches" by SOME overweight people (NOT everyone, but I do have to say, as someone who has always been thin, I HATE being called a skinny *itch by someone who is overweight) - and yes, it happens - sometimes w/ a laugh after, but still not ok. As if there's something wrong w/ being skinny.

I really try to instill in my daughter that we all come in all shapes and sizes, and being healthy and feeling fit is the most important thing - not your dress size or the scale number.

That female basketball player to me looks very muscular and very large framed... I don't know that I see any "fat" on her, but I'd never call her skinny either, because of her frame. I'm sure she's very healthy.

I'm the same height. There's a bit more than muscle going on there. I wouldn't look at her and think "OMG she's fat" but I wouldn't call her thin either.

I'm sure she's healthy.

I'm just saying that our views of overweight might be skewed a bit.

I already said I was overweight, but healthy. :)

It isn't anything to be ashamed about or hide. Anyone that's ever seen me knows I'm overweight. :rotfl:

I'm content with the way I look, and I hope that every woman, regardless of her weight, can somehow make peace with how she looks. :goodvibes
