I stopped in at our church hall today to check out the giving tree. Most of the people on it were from a state sponored nursing home nearby. Here are some of the tags I picked up:

Can of coffee
Polident
Socks
Toilet Paper
Kleenex tissues

Can you imagine asking for toilet paper for Christmas?? Why isn't the nursing home providing that? It just breaks my heart to think that this may be the only gift these people get. I wish I had actual names of these people so I could get them a real gift. I don't even know if they are male or female though. I guess I'll just pick up as much as I can and hope that these people have family that will get them a decent gift. :(

You would think that toilet paper would be supplied by the nursing home. The best gift you could give most of them is your time. So many people are put in there and then forgotten about. You could spend a few hours visiting with them about once a month. It really is sad how people are put in those homes then left all alone.

(Sorry, but this is a sore spot with me right now. My mother wants to leave my grandmother in the nursing home on Christmas Day and not even visit her!!! We are trying to do something about that!)

That just breaks my heart! :(
How nice of you to help out!

our Church does the tree for prisoners kids.

Something I never thought of, sadly, until just a few years ago. :(

We never think of the little ones that have to live with the knowledge of what their parent did and who might not get anything at all for Christmas...

Jeafl, That is sad, if the nursing home doesn't even provide TP. I have to wonder, however, if these are not simply requests for the only things these folks could think of.

For instance, my Christmas requests from my sisters included such things as conditioner, tampons :o, underwear, bird seed, and a box of tea. Yes, I can certainly afford to buy these things, but there is really nothing that I want. So, I listed things that I "need".

That is incredibly sad. :( I'm glad that you're able to help some of them out.

So many needy people, all the year through. It becomes apparent and more visible at times of the year like this. Sad indeed, Jill.

Last year one of the giving trees at our church was for women prisoners. I gather it didn't go over very well, since it's not back this year. You're right, Binny. I never really though about the prisoner's children that might not get gifts. I would definitely give to the prisoner's children, but would think twice about the prisoner's themselves.

My sister works for the Dept. of Children & Family Services, and they give parties every Christmas at the shelters. It is such an incredible experience to see how grateful these kids are. It's one thing I never miss no matter how busy the season gets.
