NY Daily News article-- Post mortified
WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on Tuesday selected former rival John Edwards to be his running mate, calling the rich former trial lawyer and rookie senator a man who showed “guts and determination and political skill” in his unsuccessful race against Kerry for the party’s nomination.
Or did Kerry really pick Dick Gephardt? In another of its "Dewey Defeats Truman"-style "exclusives," The New York Post reported on its front page and website Tuesday that Missouri Rep. Gephardt was Kerry's choice. The struggling tabloid's site pulled the embarrassing image of its flat-out-wrong front page and swapped in a wire story instead of its sure-to-stay-exclusive original, but thousands of copies of the baffling Gephardt front page were already on the streets.

Rather embarassing ... for a short time. It's the result of everyone in the media trying to be FIRST with the current big story. Looks like NBC nailed it at 7:30 a.m. Eastern this morning (someone must have been checking their email early).

However, as you point out, this will probably soon be forgotten. It's hardly the equivalent of "Dewey Defeats Truman."

but on the other hand..if I read an "exclusive" in the Post...welll, I'll just wait for the News or the Times to confirm it, thank you very much.

Arabella, that begs the question: does anyone really read the NYP?

I read the NYP everyday! But I have to admit--mostly for Page Six...I keep hoping one of my client's events will show up there one of these days.

:rotfl: I actually had someone on this board quiote the NY Post on a matter of international importance. Page 6 is the only redeeming feature in that paper -- good gossip for only $.25.

if I want serious news I read Newsday or the Times.

Yes, plenty of people read the Post. In fact, the Post's circulation has gone through the roof in recent years - which is why you see other newspapers emulating the Post to a certain extent. (I don't prefer that approach, but facts are facts, and circulation dictates.) While every other newspaper in the country is losing circ, the Post is gaining.

the Post caters to the lowest common denominator.

and they have a good sports page.

and they're the only afternoon paper in NYC. the News, the times and Newsday all publish in the morning. the Post's afternoon edition is the one that usually sells out.

and they're half the price of the News or Newsday.

but when they tried to put together a sunday edition they failed miserably. they just couldn't compete.
