This is us..

I finished the episode. I really enjoyed the history on Dr. K. I figured with Gerald McRaney in the role, we'd see a lot more of him and I was glad we did.

I didn't care bout the firefighter scenes though.

Still not a fan of the style of this show with all the jumping around in time. I don't have a problem with the concept in general. I just think it's overdone in this show.

This is one of the reasons I enjoyed this episode so much. It was a nice change to get more of one whole story in one episode instead of the little bits and pieces.

I really like Gerald McRainey in general and Dr. K as a role, so I was fine with an episode focused around him. It was somewhat interesting to see the background story behind what happened in the first episode, but I will agree that, at times, the episode felt like filler, not anything necessarily new.

I loved the episode, but I love them all. But I could have probably done without the firefighter story. But I guess they are showing how many miracles were intertwined that day.

I've been avoiding looking at this thread until I could watch the newest episode. I really loved this one and cried through a good half of it. I didn't feel like it was filler at all. The part where Jack was in the golf shop and saying he just wanted to treasure every moment with his wife and kids - wow. He's an amazing character in this show. The ideal husband and father. Dr. K's backstory also had me in tears. Both of these men showed such devotion and love for their wives. I found it really touching.

I'm not fan of the jumping around in time either. That's what turned me off from "How to Get away with Murder." At least with "This Is Us" there's enough of a "gap in the space time continum" that clothing styles and ages of the kids give us a reference point. In "How to Get away with Murder" I kept wondering if we were in the past, or the present, so I quit watching it after the first season.

I read a quick blurb from the creator (or writer) of the show and they said they really like jumping around because it allows them the space to be able to tell a story fully without having to do a spinoff show.

This normally drives me crazy but This is Us handles it in a way that lets us know what time period they are in. On many shows you can't tell when they are in another time but this show is different.

Put me in the "loved this episode" camp. The golf store scene was so hard for me to watch because it felt like such a foreshadowing of Jack's death. He wants to actually stop time so he can gain just a little more time with his family, and that made me think about him losing out by dying too soon. I have to wonder if we're getting close to learning more about how and why Jack died.

I think there will be more to the story of how they left the hospital with Randall. The fireman's wife even said he needed to return the baby to the hospital before he got in trouble with Social Services.

Next episode deals with Jack's death. I read we will find out bits and pieces throughout the season. We learn a little at a time.

I agree it's easier to follow because of the larger gap in time. I have come very close to ditching HTGAWM on many occasions. Part of my problem is that I usually watch TV while I'm doing something else. If I have to be watching for a subtle change to indicate the time jump, it's hard to do that. This is Us is much "easier" to watch, but the jumps are still annoying. I did stop watching Quantico because of the time jumps. WAY too subtle keeping track of who got a hair cut or was in a slightly different (but still comtemporary) outfit.

They kept saying Jack was perfect in the episode ....we know from another show that he drank and Rebecca told him he had to stop so I think we may see Jack fall soon if not for a little bit.

I couldn't follow the other flashback shows either but really like this one. Still a show I can't wait for the next week to see the next one unlike other shows I record and will get to them when ever.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing watching that scene - almost like he had a sense that he wouldn't have enough time with them.

That's true, I had forgotten about that. I'm sure they will show more about that period in their lives also.

This episode was not good. All the jumping around and adding new characters is confusing. That doctor was old when the babies were born so how old is he in modern day? 100?? And at first I thought the firefighter was the drs son but it wasn't.

They've never shown the doctor alive in modern day. All of his parts in the show have been from the time the babies were born or later when Kate needed surgery as a kid.

Yeah, I don't know the adoption laws of the state the state where the babies were born, but you just can't suddenly decide to adopt and take custody on the spur of the moment. When DH and I adopted our kids (about the same time frame as "This is Us") we had to do a lot of paperwork and jump through hoops and interviews, and fingerprinting, and letters of recommendations and get "certified" by a judge before we could take custody.
