This is us..

Tonight's episode was so tough for me. Two weeks ago my dh and I were celebrating our 25th anniversary aboard the Wonder. Then just one week ago we got his heartbreaking diagnosis of cancer. Totally unexpected. Life certainly does turn on a dime.
I'm so sorry. I'll keep you both in my thoughts.

I guess I'm alone in thinking this was the weakest episode so far. I don't know what it was but I was so bored by it. Very disappointing given how much I love this show. Nothing got me even close to tears this week.

You're not alone, I just came here to post the exact same thing. Such a boring episode. Nothing new was revealed other than the doc likes to talk to his dead wife at the dinner table. Such a filler episode. I hope they don't continue to do this or they will lose viewers fast.

Me, too. It fleshed out the story a bit, but didn't move the plot forward. And it didn't make me cry--why should we suddenly care about the firefighter's marriage? Or if the doctor starts dating again? I like Gerald MacRaeney's (sp?) character, but he's a tangent. I hope next week is better.

I also thought it was a weak episode. I am surprised so many liked it. It felt slow and unnecessary to me.

I thought the firefighter story was weird. Are we going to start seeing everybody's back story? Will next week show the liquor store clerks life?

I love Dr. K and thought his background was okay. But seeing him grocery shop and eat cereal was just kind of "meh" to me. I liked how Rebecca and Jacks situation was a wake up call for him and he started to live his life again. It seems he was considering suicide before the call came in to deliver the triplets.

I thought it was boring and slow and felt like "filler."

I loved last night's episode. I like seeing the back story. It makes me adore Jack even more. For me, I felt the weakest episode was the week before. I did not like the big jump ahead.

@stitch'sgirl - Thinking of you and your family. Stay strong.

Not alone. I really missed the grown kids and we already knew these stories. The only part that got me was when Dr. K was sayin she'd been his wife for 54 years and he had to put her in the ground. I didn't cry, it was more like a gut squeeze. Otherwise, meh.

For some reason, I thought last nights episode was boring too! I was actually looking at the clock the whole time because it seemed to be dragging. Of course I still love the show.... just last nights episode was not its usual appeal to me.

I loved last night's episode, very emotional.
Love Dr K.
I could have done without the fireman story.
Missed seeing Kevin.

I also thought the backstories, especially the firefighter, was totally unnecessary.

I did get a little teary when Dr. K was at his wife's grave and even a little more teary when they showed Jack telling Rebecca that they lost one of the babies.

Did anyone else think it was odd that Dr. K's daughter-in-law said that he was "still a young man"? My DH and I raised an eyebrow at each other at that one. You could even see on the wife's grave that she was 70 (and she died over a year ago) and he was probably at least her age. Also, this was around 1980, so you didn't really think of a 71 year old man as a "young man". Could've been phrased a little differently like "you have so much life left", etc. -- but a "young man"?

The older I get, the younger that seems, lol. Seriously though, early 70s is fairly young in my neck of the woods. I was with my grandmother when she was getting a stint put in and expressed my concern to her doctor. He said, "She's only 80" like she was a Spring Chicken, haha. While I don't consider it young, I don't consider it elderly either.

Oh, I agree, I don't think it's "old" -- definitely not elderly. In fact, if she would've said, "You're still young", I probably wouldn't have given it too much thought, but something about "young man" just sounds YOUNG -- especially over 35 years ago when 70 years old wasn't as young as it is today, you know?

It's interesting how we can see the same episode so differently. I thought they did a good job of showing how the Doctor's interaction with Jack made him rethink his plan to commit suicide....did you not pick up on that? He was at his wife's graveside telling he was going to off himself when he gets the call to deliver the triplets. It's about how the interaction touched the hearts and lives of both participants. I thought that was magical and masterfully done.

I enjoyed tonight's episode, probably because I am about 36 wks pregnant (although not triplets!) now and I'm pretty much acting the way Rebecca was in this epi.

I agree it was weird having the firemans backstory, but they needed a filler. Still don't like Miguel! Lol

Oh, I get that. I also "get" that newborn Randall touched the life of the firefighter, who thought he'd found the miracle that he prayed for. And maybe he did, just not in quite the way that he first imagined. I just don't know what that has to do with the series, generally. No matter how much I like Dr. K--and I think he's a great character--his story arcs are limited, and pretty much played out. He stepped in to deliver the triplets. He happened to be in the ER when Kate's appendix burst. Where else can they go with him? There are other characters who could stand to be fleshed out--Miguel, Toby, Sloane--that have more of a relevance to the series. JMHO, of course.
