This is Us- Season four

The best part of the episode - Beth Pearson.

Always!

Still ridiculously and insanely jealous of those who got her on the quiz. :rotfl2:;)

Amen! When he comes home from the therapist and tells Beth--"Oh, she said I have unresolved feelings about my mother" (or whatever the exact quote is), and Beth goes, "Yeah, I knew that. Why are we paying this woman?" or whatever it was she said (my apologies, I watched it live with my kids, so my memory isn't exact). Love her!

I agree Beth is great, she is definitely Randall's rock. Not sure where he would be without her. I didn't like how Randall guilted Rebecca into the trial. I wonder if Kevin will convince her not to go. We know Rebecca is worse in the flash forward. Is it because she didn't go or did she go and it not work? Either scenario one of them will blame the other which will probably cause the rift.

Everyone needed to agree on Rebecca's treatment plan unless/until it wasn't what Randal wanted? BTW..why hasn't Miguel been consulted regarding his wife's medical decisions?

Shame on Randal for manipulating his mother in her condition.
Here’s the thing though: it sounds like everyone in your situation is on the same page. It’s pretty awful of Randall to go behind his siblings’ (and Miguel’s!!! Rebecca has a husband!!!) backs and drop a GIGANTIC guilt bomb on Rebecca to manipulate her into saying yes.

With my dad’s dementia, my sister and I defer to my mom because we both live out of state and my mom is my dad’s primary caregiver. If she needs our backup, we give it to her. I know all the Pearsons are dismissive of Miguel, and Randall justified it to himself as “he missed this for months,” but the bottom line is Miguel should be the one who has the final say. I bet none of the Big 3 ever even considered his opinion.

Agree wholeheartedly. Sterling is portraying a deeply flawed, multi-layered character extremely well, but boy is Randall a total jerk right now. I wonder if he even talked through any of it with Beth. I feel like Beth would tell him to step back from the situation and let his mother be in control of what she has left.
So I guess I wasn’t very clear. I find Rebecca’s situation to be completely opposite of my own. Randall took a calculated risk pressuring his mother to side with him. Risk 1–Randall should not have manipulated his mother against the stated wishes of Kevin and probably Kate and Miguel. Risk 2–the trial is unlikely to provide benefit equal to the physical and emotional cost of the patient.

Randall is an analyst by trade and personality. I think it is safe to assume the foreshadowing is explicit. Randall’s calculated risk was a fail.

I find it interesting that in both of Randall’s “what if” scenarios Kevin is not an actor but instead has joined his father in the business. Randall has never been impressed with Kevin’s acting success or maybe he is envious of the attention it brings Kevin and feels he doesn’t deserve it. He also has Kevin with Sophie in both scenarios and has given Kate a husband and children

I wondered out loud last night if the flash forward of the cabin scene was in an alternate reality (likely Randall’s worst case scenario life). I wouldn’t put it past the writers

I loved it but I only watch on my caveman level , so I come here to see what wasn't their lol. One more thing, I remember it might have been season 1 when Randal's father died , they interviewed the writer and he hinted that maybe the fact that Randal's mom has died is not really the case

In the idealistic world it definitely seemed like William was being deceptive about Randall’s birth mother. Obviously that could be wishful thinking for Randall but there could be something there. Maybe she went on a drug bend and left William with Randall alone and William couldn’t cope, assumed/wished she died, etc. Very interesting. I think Randall certainly believes that his biomom is dead. But maybe she isn’t. Or maybe she really died and obviously Randall wishes she hadn’t.

Related question. It always seemed as if Randall was a newborn or a few days old when taken to hospital and mother was dead when she approached William. William’s retelling to Randall in the current timeline did not seem to dispute that. Alternate William made it seem as if the mother died after a period of time longer than a few days. Infant Randall has always been portrayed as similar to Kate and Kevin. While it wouldn’t make a difference upon toddlerhood or beyond if Randall were a week or few weeks older, it didn’t seem consistent with presumed canon.

No I think he was at least a month old or more when he was left. I think that’s correct.

In the very first episode, pretty sure Rebecca referred to Randall as three days old, the same age as the twins. He was supposedly born on the same day, seeing as all 3 celebrate their birthday on the same day.
the show started with the story line going, all 3 and father had the same birthdate, he had to be a few days old
He was surrendered on the day that the twins were born. But it makes no sense that he would be born, surrendered at the fire station rather than a hospital especially if it was the day he was born, then brought to the hospital... I believe they had him for a short time first. They celebrate his birthday on the day they got him.

It’s been a long time since the episodes with William but I think there were references to them having Randall for at least a short time.

I figured this. It just seemed alternate William referred to a much longer period of time than the scenes with young William portrayed. Or my memory is lousy:crutches:

Not that I care enough to go back and verify any of it! It just makes it easier to believe literal same birthday.

I would love some theories for how “strangers” will help tie up plot lines and set stage for new cliff hanger(s). Especially theories that go beyond Kevin’s pregnant fiancé.

I think Darnell and Malik are big wild cards. I can’t decide if I am leaning toward Malik adding to Randall’s anxiety and marking a breaking point, or Darnell somehow becoming Randall’s confidante or something. It mostly just seems like a lot of plot points to cover, and I don’t them as being significant cliff hanger material.
