This is Us- Season 5

*not directed at you*

While race has always played a part in this show (as it does in real life), I hope that we are able to discuss all aspects of the show. We’ve kept these threads going for five seasons without any issues and I hope we can continue to do so.
No worries, I've said what I need to say on the topic. Happy to move on.

I don’t even remember the first episode from this season. Sorry this thread isn’t for you.

Hey not a problem. Just saying how I felt about the show, I had a lot of time invested watching all the previous episodes and was sorry to see it go the way it did. This is my personal opinion and my DH agreed with me so we decided to stop watching.. Too bad some people can't allow that without taking offense.

I guess you can always go back and watch the first episode again if you don’t remember it.

This is so trivial, I wondered why they use 2 different actors to play Nicky. When the other adults are either aged or made to seem younger.

Ummm...that's not at all what you said. Your exact words (pasted above) are "the show was just getting to racist."

That's VERY different and seems pretty inaccurate as well.

That's why I tried to explain that if you went back and typed what you meant, instead of saying the show was racist; that it'd clear up the confusion and you'd stop getting so many questions...maybe you like the questions who knows...but either way those are very different things.

Below is what I said:

We stopped watching this season because we felt the show was just getting to racist. I enjoyed the show previously even with the racial undertones but it was just getting to be too much for us. Didn't care for it so we changed the channel.

You left out the part in bold which is pretty much the same thing as you "thought" I should have said which is quoited below:

It may be more clear if you went back and wrote "it wasn't for us," of "I prefer to not have race playing such a role in my entertainment."

I think saying "I didn't care for it so we changed the channel" is pretty much the same thing. To bad if you don't see it that way, that is not my problem.

I actually enjoyed last nights episode. I guess I missed or forgot somewhere along the way that Miguel did not marry Rebecca until 13 years after Jack's death. Kind of deflated Nicky saying Miguel swooped in. Lol. I loved the way Miguel stood up to Rebecca's dad. Had a lump in my throat.

I was glad to see Tess finally be told that she can't talk to Beth disrespectfully regardless of who or what is going on. I had to chuckle because I probably would not have "tread lightly" either with the door being closed. Mother/daughter relationships can be complicated/complex. It is interesting to see Beth and her mom evolving and it really hit home when both were talking about how the plans and path they had in their heads for their children are not the paths their children (Beth and Tess) have and are choosing.

I feel for Toby. A good worker who loved his job and is now displaced through no fault of his own. Really messes with your head and I also can see the start of a downward spiral.

Madison and Kevin will hit a bump along the way....I am just not sure what that will look like.

I feel like Randall was having a lot of "aha" moments in the therapy group. So many people verbalizing what he has probably felt through the years but never put into his own words or even realized that is how he felt. Will be interested to see Kevin and him talk.

Enough of my ramblings....hahaha

I think Nicky in the current timeline is too old to play a young Nicky. Milo is only 43 IRL so he can pass off being younger, The actor who plays present day Nicky is 65. No way is he passing as a young 18-20 year old. Not sure why they didn't take the young Nicky and make him older. They do a decent job with Miguel. I think it's easier to age a young actor older than an older actor younger. Make up only hides so much.

I read an article about Rebecca and they were ready to hire another actress to play "older Rebecca" but they tried it with Mandy and thought she did such a good job, the decided to age her instead of getting a second actress, but they were ready to do that if Mandy could not pull it off. Maybe they tried aging younger Nicky and it wasn't authentic enough so they hired older Nicky. I'm glad they did. I love present day Nicky.

Lol, ok let me be more specific; your 1st sentence states "we felt the show was just getting to racist." That's your exact words, spelling and all. If you're seriously confused and not understanding I'm trying to help you understand that is what ppl. are confused about because your 1st sentence is you saying the show is racist...if you're not actually confused just disregard.

Either way we've derailed this thread too much already, but if you were genuine I wanted to help...but either way I'll move on to the actual show.

I pretty much agree with all of this..... The scene at the adoption group where a person would say something and Randall would flash us all back to a moment in his life..so moving

Oh...and I firmly believe that Randall is currently processing his new information. That doesn't negate all the love and connection he still has with his adoptive family. If his character remains steady,he will learn to embrace it all as part of his life....I think he will over time.

I totally agree. I don't see any scenario in which Randall decides he's done with his family. They have such a deep bond and so much love and support for each other. He knows that and I've never seen him not appreciate it; I think all of this is just another layer to his character...I'm sure they will all stay close etc. I think what we'll see is the attempt for him to try to share this with them which may be difficult, but ultimately I'm sure they will all stay a close family.

Okay, I had some tears rolling down my cheeks by the end of this one. I really liked it. How cool that the episode really evolved around just the two characters talking at three different ages. I found it pretty moving--the whole idea of a ghost kingdom kind of broke my heart.

Yes, I agree. My brother is adopted (also half African American) and it definitely gave me a lot to think about. The ghost kingdom....ughh...so heart breaking.

What an important episode. And so fitting, given what’s going on in the States right now.

The episode was so good because it was Randall talking to Kevin, but it could have been said to any of us. I like to think of myself of very open and tolerant of everyone, but maybe I have had racial biases or opinions without really realizing it. I went to elementary school in a very white area. I had a Black kid in my class and we played all the time. My dad said he wanted me to marry someone like him when we got older lol. He told me that in Grade 6 or 7. Also, going through K-12 I did not have one Black teacher. That’s really striking these days. K-9 was all White teachers and then the high school had Asian teachers, I just didn’t have classes with them.

I don’t remember seeing racism growing up at all, but I grew up on in a upper middle class area so maybe I just wasn’t looking for it, and I also just wasn’t aware that people could hate other people based on skin colour.

I liked that the focus was on Randall and Kevin without quick cutaways to Kate or Miguel.

I think the neighbours line of Kevin belongs in comedy is going to be a butterfly effect comment and will take Kevin in a whole new direction.

Several years ago when my daughter was 10 or 11, I told her (I cringe now) that I sometimes forget that we don't look like each other and when people look at us funny, I have no idea why. I told her I just see her as my fabulous daughter whom I love more than anyone. She said, "Mom, I can never forget that we don't look like each other. I hear about it all the time, and I see the looks that you don't see." A lesson for me in white privilege that I haven't forgotten.

So, tonight when that ticket-taker didn't give Jack a ticket for Randall, it just sort of stabbed my heart.

I loved how they showed the other side of adoption. People think it's all happy and the child should be grateful for being adopted, almost like the adoptive parents are saints. The truth is that adoption is built on loss. Randall had to deal with losing his birth parents, extended family and his culture. I think Rebecca and Jack tried so hard to "make it up" to him by doting on him. It had such an impact on Kevin, even at a very young age. Also, interracial adoptions were not as popular back then so they probably stuck out even more when out in public. Jack even commented to the ticket taker when he said, "it's okay, we get this all the time" when the guy assumed Randall was with the black family.

This was an amazing episode. You've all summed it up better than I could have.

But now we have to wait until May 11th? And only 3 episodes left in the season!

I really enjoyed it too. When Keven finally admits at the end he resented Randall because he was black and took responsibility for his actions, it set Randall free. He was able to go to the Ghost Kingdom where he could be with William and Laurel without guilt. So moving.

I’m one who doesn’t typically cry during the show, but I found myself very teary several times last night.
