I am currently on a business trip in Germany ( I am writing this from my hotel room). The picture below is called Castle Neuschwanstein (pronounced: new-shvan-stein). This is the castle that Walt Disney modeled Cinderella Castle in the Magic Kingdom. I thought everyone here would love to see this. Can you all see the resemblance. I was not able to tour the inside of the castle but I did get some nice shots. When I return home from business I will post more pictures but

here is this one. I hope you all like it.

Thanks for the photograph! It brings back memories for me.... I visited the castle during the summer of '93. It looks so beautiful with the snowy mountains! Did you visit Garmisch? I'm not sure if I am spelling it correctly, but it was in the Bavairian region. I think the Olympics were held there one time. :sunny:

I visited the castle too! When I was in high school, my sister was working in Germany, so we took a family vacation there! I have to say that the castle is breathtaking!

Neuschwanstein is wonderful, isn't it? However, it is Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disneyland that is modeled after it.

Actually, according to The Walt Disney World Trivia Book by Louis Mongello, Neuschwanstein was one of the castles that was the inspiration for Cinderella Castle in Florida, not Sleeping Beauty's castle.

Thanks for the great photo! Lucky you to get to see it in person! :cool1:

Thanks for posting the picture.....
This castle brings back so many memories-visited it 20 years ago, loved it then and still love it today!

Sleeping Beauty Castle
At the end of Main Street, U.S.A. lies a castle. Though not the home of a king or queen, it is the castle that everyone wants their picture taken in front of. Everybody who has ever been to Disneyland has most likely walked across its drawbridge. It is Sleeping Beauty Castle. This famous Castle, resting at the center of Disneyland, was created with the combined features of many Middle Age castles throughout Europe, although its architecture was mainly inspired by the German Schloss Neuschwanstein Castle in the rocky Alps.

I can't wait to see more of your pictures when you get home! Thanks for sharing. :sunny:

Boy, do I need a trip to Germany!

I read that somewhere, too, about this castle being the idea for Sleeping Beauty Castle. Besides, looking at the big picture from the OP it doesn't even look like Cinderella Castle.

We were able to see it in the snow, too. And it was around this time, 13 years ago. Winter is a terrific time to visit - no lines!!!

I had also heard in the past that it was Sleeping Beauty's castle in DL :)

Saw this at Deb Wills' site: http://allearsnet.com/tp/mk/castlegold.htm

The last paragraph says:

Cinderella Castle was designed as a fanciful composite of French courts such as Fontainebleau, Versailles, and several chateaux of the Loire Valley. Its base evokes the Romanesque architecture of medieval fortresses from the 11th through 13th centuries, while its upper portion is reminiscent of the Gothic styles of Renaissance-era castles.

Thanks for posting! I lived near there and we would go on weekends.... along with other dream locations!

And yes, Garmisch was host to a winter Olympics - Bavaria has hosted both a summer and winter Olympics. I was there in 1972 at our home watching the torch run past our house. (And sadly later during the hostage crisis)

I think I can see how it may have inspired both Sleeping Beauty Castle and Cinderella Castle.
