Watching the Today Show and the nightly news over much of the past few weeks, I'm amazed at how much time is allocated to Scott Peterson, Kobe Bryant, Mark Hacking and the like.

We're at war, in the middle of a presidential election, preparing for the Olympics in Athens, watching the economy hitch and go, Porter Goss, Iran, North Korea, Gaza, and so many more real news stories.

Yet it seems that the majority of the media's attention is focused on the scintillating, gossipy, emotional, scandalous crapola.

Not that I don't feel for the people and families involved, but I gotta think that the media needs to act less like the National Enquirer and more like hard nosed NEWS reporters.

By the way - Mike Wallace, of 60 Minutes fame, was arrested last night. I saw it on the news.

What did Mike do?

I don't even watch the news anymore. I read things on cnn's website and a couple of local tv stations' websites, but I can choose to read the gossipy stuff, or not read it. Watching the news is too depressing.

I so agree, OK. I have asked that same question several times here, when stories start to make it national, as the guy in Utah I think it is. Sad, certainly. Heartbreaking, certainly. The absolute worst to those affected, and maybe local, certainly. But, not national in scope, and certainly not national in scope for months or years. Flame me if need be, JMO.

I get most of my news from several papers and searching the Net.

Now, I will say, it is national news to see you, along with so many other DIS'ers, finding there way back to the DIS, after such long hiatuses. :teeth:

How true, and that is why I don't watch much news anymore. The real "heart" of news goes unreported anymore. We hear very little about world issues anymore.

OK, you're absolutely right. We need more coverage on real news stories like this.

Very true... honestly I don't even watch the news for more than 10-15 minutes in the morning. It's enough to get some local news, the weather and traffic... maybe a bit of world news, but that's it. Our local newspaper is just as bad, so we stopped getting that as well :o

Having worked at a television station, I can say that it's rarely really about what's important to report. It's all about what will bring in viewers. The bottom line is it's a business. It may not be a traditional business, but it exists to make money. If there is an informative component to it, that's an added bonus.

I have all but stopped watching news except when I know the local weather will be on and even then sometimes I don't. I get most of my news off cnn.com or on other news websites.

I'm so sick and tired of some of these stories like Kobe, Scott, etc. Dan I think you summed it up best...no flames here!!

I still can't believe the Olympics are this Friday. I feel like there has been very limited publicity. The most I've heard is on Michael Phelps and that just may be because he's local.

It's all very frustrating...maybe someday we'll get back to the real news. :(

LOL, Indy! Now THAT'S real NEWS! ...Or was that "mews"?

That's why I quit watching the "morning shows" many years ago... they are not news shows, just a version of entertainment tonight in the morning.

::yes:: I agree! The DIS is feeling like home again.....:D

I totally agree. But, like someone else said, it's what most people seem to want.

I try to stay up to date on everything, but ya know, sometimes the news is just so depressing, I hit the off button!

I heard about Mike Wallace. He was arrested for pushing around and Limo and Cab inspector after leaving some restaurant. They were being sited for double parking or something. I just caught the tail end of the blurb.

Because of the popularity of 24 Hour News Stations (FoxNews, CNN, MSNBC etc.) there is a lot of "air" to fill. (hence stories are repeated over and over) I think the networks are trying to compete with them as well. I can't remember the last time I watched a regular newscast.
I usually only watch the local at 11 if I need to know the weather forecast. Otherwise, the headlines are usually the same........ a murder, a fire and a robbery. (and sometimes, if it has been slow here..........they'll go national just to find that type of story!!)

So, I'll check Foxnews to see if there is any breaking news or my local radio station when they have their updates.

This is the reason I barely even watch the news anymore. It's become infotainment and rarely focuses on the things that really affect us all.

I rarely watch the news anymore-- usually only when getting ready for work in the morning.

Anyone ever wonder how they decide on which missing person or whatever they do put in the national news???? People go missing all the time/ every day but you only see the ones nationally that are young and beautiful.

Yes. This bothers me as well.
