'This is a whitewash of justice'

Smollett's legal team fired back Thursday afternoon, issuing this statement:
"It is the Mayor and the Police Chief who owe Jussie - owe him an apology - for dragging an innocent man's character through the mud. Jussie has paid enough.".
And that's what you get when you don't require an acceptance of responsibility when handing out a deal like he got.

I know what my reply would be: "Get bent! According to you guys I didn't do anything wrong, so why should I pay for something that legally I didn't do!?!?!? Maybe you should have thought of that earlier! No back-izes!"
That's pretty much how his attorneys responded to the request.

The ongoing situation with the incredible CRIME, and violence and death rate in Chicago have absolutely nothing to do with this.
Are people kidding?
WTH????
These comments hold absolutely no credible logic, whatsoever.

The man perpetrated a HATE CRIME.
I fully believe his motive was to foment division and absolute hatred towards another demographic.
To make them targets of confrontation and hatred and violence.
In a very dangerous and volatile area, not to mention nation wide.

Everyone (except for this prosecutor) seems to fully believe that Smollett orchestrated this. And have made very clear public statements.
Aren't they now mentioning a possible civil/monetary legal action.

The brothers are not under any indictment. The least of which should be perjury, if they were lying, and Smollett was innocent.

I have heard that there were materials, magazine(s), etc.. that have been confiscated in the Fed's investigation. With the assumption that these were used to make that infamous 'letter'.

I am hoping the Fed's are remaining fully involved... Including an investigation of the circumstances of these charges being dropped.

Well, we'll see what exactly they have on him with regard to that. I think it might only be the statements from the two brothers which might not be strong enough to charge him, but maybe he was dumb enough to lick his own stamp.

Well he was dumb enough to write his own check so I wouldn't put anything past him. His mother apparently taught him well.

It takes a pretty stupid person to sign a cheque used in perpetuating a crime. Someone should tell them they need to hush ;)

Think if this was the other way around. A white actor made up he was attacked by two black guys wearing Obama hats saying this is Obama country. No way they would let this white actor get away with this.

He'd be ostracized, not embraced, by the Hollywood elite.

Black privilege.

I'm not outraged. I'm frightened that this happens. For all our claims the let the justice system do its job, more and more we see the opposite. Those with fame and money seem to be able to abuse the justice system. I do feel for the police department who is being undermined by this decision.

That is the beyond extraordinary part of the legal aspect. Legally speaking there is no deal. They may as well have asked for a selfie and an autograph and called it a day.

A deal gets memorialized on the record in a court of law where the defendant at least pleads no contest for reasons of civil liability and something is stipulated to as the factual basis of responsibility regarding the charges. None of that happened here. I'd like to know what legal experts have to say about the double jeopardy threshold here.

So it turns out when Foxx recused herself from the case, it was a colloquial use of the term rather than the legal use. I guess that clears it all up.

Yes, there are a lot of legal and ethical questions here, regarding the justice problem. Inappropriate use/abuse of power, etc...
The Chicago police are the least of these concerns in this case.
Guaranteed, a LOT more going on here.

Maybe the Feds will remain involved and investigate a true miscarriage of justice, instead of committing one.

the feds??? LOL, they can't find their own behinds right now.

I just searched "federal indictments" in Google news. Over 28 million results. These include the recent indictments in a $300 million Ponzi scheme, a bank robbery, somebody sexually exploiting children, and seven local police officers on drug charges. Not to mention the college admissions matter. The feds aren't perfect, but I think you're overstating the issues. What exactly is it that you think the feds can't do right now?

Maybe that reference is regarding how they have been spending tremendous amounts of time and effort trying so hard to find other things that just are not there?
Having said that... I am not devoid of all faith.
At this point, with the State Prosecution being what it is...
It really is the only hope of any justice or acceptable outcome.
