Laci Peterson Possibly Spotted
(Longview, Washington-AP) January 31, 2003 — There's a claim that a pregnant woman missing from California might have been spotted last month in Washington state.

A grocery store clerk in Longview thinks Laci Peterson came through her checkout line accompanied by an older man sometime in December.

The clerk says when the man stepped out of line to get something, the woman told her she had been kidnapped and asked her to call police when they left.

A police report says the clerk intended to do that -- but got distracted and forgot. Last week, she apparently recognized Peterson from a story on C-N-N and came forward.

The 27-year-old woman disappeared from her home in Modesto, California on Christmas Eve.

Police plan to review the grocery store's security tapes. Police say the clerk told them she feels terrible about not coming forward earlier

 Either someone has paid this person to say this, or they are in serious need of attention (as in makes things up to get it). If someone came up to me asking for help & that they had been kidnapped, my heart would be pounding until I got to the phone or at least to the manager of the store!! How ON EARTH could anyone FORGET something like THAT!! Not even to mention how they could possibly not have heard about this every single day like the rest of the country.
They can't possibly expect people to believe this.

If its true, this woman must be a complete moron!

There would be no way I could forget something like that. Any chance this woman in Washington is a friend of the husband Scott?

There is one thing that I always remember: when things don't make sense it's because you don't have full information. People act in rational ways and it is not rational for a store clerk to 'forget' that someone told her she was kidnapped and needed help. Therefore we are not getting the full story from the clerk. She has/had some motive for the way she acted whether internal or external. Either way I don't believe she's telling the truth.

Sounds fishy to me. Any normal person would have called 911 immediately.

It will be interesting to see what the security tapes show.

Let's just hope that the store even had security tapes. I agree that you couldn't just forget something like that. Usually stores now-a-days have codes to pass on to other cashiers or over the intercom to alert other employees. This cashier could have done something like that before the older man came back. Just too much of this doesn't make sense.

this story just doesnt make sense, I mean how could you forget something like that and plus the clerk said she couldnt find a phone book to look up the police department, um hello 9-1-1 ring a bell.

A friend of mine was an operator once and she had the dingiest people calling. She had one lady call and ask where the eleven was. She couldn't find it. She was trying to call 911.

But I think the story is bogus too.

It's now on the CNN web-site that Laci Peterson is NOT on the video tapes of the store - Sorry, I don't know how to copy the link. Maybe someone could do that for me -

They should have that person arrested for making a false statement!

Yup, no surprise it's not her in video. In almost ALL of these disapearance cases involving a young woman, the woman is killed the day she disapeared. Someday someone will find her decomposed body dumped/hidden in a remote area. It's always the same sad ending when a young woman disapears and does not turn up within a couple of days. She's been dead for awhile. Hope this is not what happened to her, but most likely it is. :( :( :(

This was only one of over 6000 leads/tips that have been made to Modesto polie since Laci dissapearance. Should they arrest every one of those people too?

Here goes---I live in Longview-----When I first heard the news---( one of our friends e-mailed the daily news reports to us) --I thought the sighting might be a "mistake" . The Store--there are actually 2 Market Place Stores--is out of the way. If you take exit 36 you'd pass right by a small convience store where snacks and such could be purchased. ( I would think even taking the 36 exit would be strange as there are highway signs stating gas, lodging, and restaurants are conviently located at exit 39).

To get to the market in question -----they would to have almost had to just happen on it----The Safeway store would have been easier to reach and it to is 3 or so miles off the interstate. The cashiers story just didn't ring right---sorry just my .02.

I agree---911 wold have been the least I would have done---These stores have security on staff at all times. I'd have called security. I have no idea who the cashier is ----I do personally know 2 of the cashiers from the other store---They are both hard working people----.

What will be sad is if the cashier really thought she saw Ms Petersen. Let me also tell you last summer a clerk at one of the Kalama stores--located 8 miles south of Longview on the Interstate----helped save a kidnapped women....Very much the same---victim stated to the clerk she was being held against her will--clerk locked the victim in the back room and called the police. ( I thought it a good idea the clerk locked the victim up---but let the kidnapper have a way to leave---this probably kept everyone from being harmed---gave the kidnapper an escape route) the kidnappers were caught!!!!
