Yesterday everyone on staff received an email from one of our 3rd grade teachers about the custodian that is in charge of the 3rd grade hall. This custodian came to her with this really sad story about her poor son who had been in the hospital and was evicted while he was in there. All his worldly possessions were thrown to the curb and then it rained and everything was either ruined in the rain or stolen.
The teacher was asking for anyone that had any extra furniture, dishes etc to please help her son out.(We are a very close-knit staff so this is not odd) Today she updated us with a list of items donated (things from a washer, sofa, kitchen table, end tables etc).
I printed both emails and displayed them in our kitchen so if anyone from our area wanted to do anything they could. My ladies read the emails and started laughing. They then told me that Ms Tina was making it all up!!!! I was furious!!!! Turns out her poor son lives with her(and has been for over a year), is getting a disability check and who knows what else from the government, had not been in the hospital, etc. She also "timed" her production to come near payday(today) so that she could collect monetary donations as well.
I emailed the teacher to let her know what I found out but had not heard from her before I left. I HOPE she was able to let the rest of the staff know about this before they started giving her money. I also told the school secretary and she told me that this man we were supposed to be helping had been fired from this school a few years back for stealing!! The secretary was going to tell our Principal also.
Now I know why Ms Tina didn't come tell us any of this sob story and only went to the teachers....most of the ladies in the kitchen(except me and one other) knew the real story since they all take a break at the same time.
This just makes me so angry that someone could do something like this. She had definitely lost all credibility with many of us and I hope she never really needs any help because this is like "The Boy Who Cried Wolf".
