Thinning hair in women

Oh no. I hadn't thought of that. I have dark brown hair, and I can see through it a bit on my crown. I was thinking the contrast makes it show up a lot. Buy maybe my hair can't take the processing.
There is a product called Toppik I bought for my daughter who has alopecia. It's like fiber particles you shake onto scalp areas that are thinning. You buy it in the color of your hair so it covers your scalp a bit so you can't see so much scalp. I got it on Amazon. DD is a bit allergic to it but my best friend uses it and has no trouble with it.

So, I'm wondering if other women have found anything that helps with hormonal caused hair loss? I'm 49 and am quickly approaching menopause (I hope!) Horrible hot flashes, weight gain around the middle and my hair is thinning. I started using the lowest strength developer in my hair dye (I mix and dye my own hair). I also wash it every other day as opposed to every day like I used to. I'm not freaking out, it's part of growing older for lots of people but I would like to know I'm doing whatever I can .

Some possible treatments depending on the cause:

1. Thyroid medication
2. Natural hormone supplementation could possibly help the menopause issues, particularly bioidentical progesterone (not progestins, which are something totally different)
3. Finasteride (5mg daily) to fight male hormones attacking the hair follicles
4. Iron supplementation if your ferritin levels are below 80 (the optimal level for hair growth)
4. If doctors & testing come up with no answer, ask a dermatologist for a scalp biopsy. You could have lichenplanopilaris, in which the body's immune system reacts against the scalp's hair follicles as if they were foreign, scarring them & causing permanent hair loss. Best treatment for that is the immunosuppressant CellCept.

If all else fails, go to a good stylist and get a short, but trendy haircut. It will make all of the difference.

My very good friend (62 years old) got her hair basically shaved. She is a 100 pound woman who wears funky glasses and up to date clothing/jewelry. She looks great. Once in a blue moon, she pops on a wig. I love it!

Thanks everyone. I don't have any bald spots and I guess you could say my hair is still thickish overall, but it IS thinning. I am definitely going to ask to have my thyroid checked. I started taking biotin just yesterday and am looking for a thickening shampoo/conditioner line.
