Thinking of moving to Florida

We are seriously thinking of making the move that we have wanted to for years......We think it is now time.

Of course, we still want to use our DVC to vacation at Disney, but I am wondering what others do. We are looking at south of Orlando, north of Orlando and the west coast/Fort Myers/Sarasota.

Think of the airfare we will save!!!!!!!

Your thoughts please!!!!!! :cheer2: :Pinkbounc :jumping4: :Pinkbounc :jumping4:

I'm working on the same plan of moving down to Florida - but I'm keeping my DVC points - will be much easier for me to share with family then. Not to mention using the points for other destinations - could come in very handy!

We are also thinking about moving to Florida but want to wait until DS is through with college. We have been researching the Sarasota and Orlando areas. Annmarie

I know we've had a couple of people on this board who have moved to the Vero Beach area. And I daresay they are definitely keeping their DVC points and looking forward to the Florida resident discounts! :D

Personally, I'd look on the coasts and see what kind of pricing/location you can afford.

It's a nice dream, isn't it? Especially during these winters! :earseek:

I would think twice about living on a coast in Florida. I guess it's the fact that 4 hurricanes went through in, what, 4 months? It might not ever happen again; but it could happen again next year! My DH's old boss moved from Florida to Alabama, where the cost of living is much lower. Weather is almost as nice. Just my $.02.

I was thinking I might choose to live a bit to the north as well. If one must pick Florida I'd probably go with the Jacksonville area. They rarely get hurricanes. But if you don't want a Florida resident discount I'd probably move to Georgia or Alabama instead. If you were just south of Atlanta...say Macon...the drive wouldn't be that bad but the weather would be cooler and you get all the advantages of being close to a metropolis.

As a Jerseyite who relocated to Atlanta I have to say the latest touch of winter is a HUGE relief...particularly from an insect perspective. It did get down to the teens one day (ONE) but normal highs are in the high 50's low 60's.

Another suggestion would be to consider being rootless for a while. Why not rent? There are tons of houses for rent in Atlanta metro and I would imagine this would be true for the surrounding region. Hilton Head/Savannah could be quite nice.

Stay away from the coasts by at least 20 miles. I have a relatives on the Gulf Coast (Clearwater area) and they are both paying a ton for homeowners insurance and it's real hard to get. I have another set of relatives who live further inland and cost drops a bit.

I know all of you are suggesting to stay away from the coasts but it isn't keeping people away. Homes in our area (Melbourne) are selling like crazy! House prices have gone up drastically over the last few years. I remember looking at homes down here about five years ago and they were so much cheaper then up north. I don't find that to be the case now.

We moved here in June from MI. Hurricanes aside, it is a great place to live. We have used our DVC three times since moving here. Because we are only an hour away, we also end up going for just a day and coming home. I think we will continue to easily use up all of our points. I found our trips home to be very relaxing. We always went for at least a week to ten days before. Our trips are shorted now but probably more frequent. You can't beat the seasonal AP, either. All in all, I don't see us selling our points any time soon.

We too are planning to be Floridians probably in '07! We'll keep our Cape May home because here's where we see most family and friends. Very very few people travel to Ohio to visit us, but with homes in Cape May and Florida, probably Orlando area, our DVC points will most certainly be used by us and our family and friends.

We are planning the move from NY to FLorida in 2006. DS is graduatign high school and looking at colleges in Florida.
We will definitely keep our points. We love our trips to WDW but also love the VB and HH trips so we plan on keeping our points. The drives will be a lot shorter!
Happy and Healthy New Year wishes to everyone!

We moved to South Florida from NY about 7 years ago, and kept our points. My DH was thrilled because instead of only vacationing once a year at WDW, he was able to go for one big vacation - and then a few mini-vacations (mostly long weekends) at WDW. Also took advantage of the resident pass discount - and of course the savings on airfare came in quite handy as well.

I just came back from a vacation in NYC and although I'll always consider it to be "home" - had to admit that it was so nice to come back to 70 degree weather, palm trees, and sunshine!

Good luck w/your move.

Our DS was looking at FL colleges last year and we thought we would be living there now! But as it turned out, we looked at St. Joe's in Philadelphia and he loved it! That's the reason we won't be moving for a few years. Hope your DS doesn't look at schools outside of FL since he too may change his mind! Annmarie

Hey I am from PA too and we stay at the Boardwalk. Just thought I would drop you a line and say Hello and Happy New Year from a neighbor in PA. ~Darla
