Thinking of joining DVC - Point Questions

If I get a package that gives me 325 points a year, and a place I am booking is 327 points, how much more out of pocket is it for each point?

You will have two options. You can either borrow the two points from your next year and it will cost nothing, or you can purchase the points directly from DVC as a one time use (not recurring every year) at $15/point. I believe you can make this purchase every year if needed, but I'm not 100% positive.

But you can only purchase those extra points to use at 7 months out because they are not home resort points. So you can't use them to get AKV Concierge Level villas.

No, I think it means you would have to borrow.

I would by 350 points so your arent short everyyear and you have some flexibilty when they reallocate points each year (like 2011 weekdays are costing more points than before but weekends cost less).

Or you could drop one night. But you have to be on the phone exactly at 9AM ET when Member Services opens and you still might not get it. Members can book for up to seven days from 11 months out from their arrival day. So if five families were arriving the day before you and they booked up the five one/two bedroom villas when you called the next day, they would be all booked already. There is no guarantee that you will get the days/location you need even if you call when MS opens exactly 11 months out for your home resort.

I would look at the resale market as mention earlier. You will be able to buy more points for the same price you would pay Disney. I also would not get stuck with one resort and time of the year. We enjoy all of the different resorts and events during the year

And if you still want to buy from Disney (maybe because you have to finance and it is easier from Disney), be sure to ask them to split your points into 2 or 3 smaller contracts (for example 100, 100, 125). This gives you the option of selling one of the contracts if you find you need less points in the future (for example, your kids have grown up and you ony need a 1 bedroom instead of a 2 bedroom). Plus smaller contracts are easier to sell. If you leave it as just one big contract, you would have to sell the whole thing - contracts are sold whole - points can't be split off.

Disney has no problem doing this and there is no impact in cost or incentives.

Plus if you really want 327 points, I think Disney will sell you that amount. However given the fact that they have reallocated the last two years and the point requirements for a particular trip changed, I probably won't bother and instead would either buy more and bank the extras and eventually take a extra trip or borrow and eventually skip a trip. Me personally - every trip is different (time of year, resort, room size, length of trip) so I certainly don't worry about the fact I bank and borrow or worry about having an exact number of points.

You have to have the points available to you in order to complete a reservation.

As others have mentioned, the least expensive option, if you are short, is to borrow. You can buy your contract for any amount you wish so if you know 327 is the number, get that or 330 to allow a few points for changes.

If you book at 11 months, are short, and don't want to borrow from the next year, then you can purchase up to 24 one time use points at the 7 month mark. If you are trying for a hard to get reservation, this may or may not help you out.

But, if you are talking such a small point difference, I would probably just borrow if adding on more isn't in the cars.

With 325 points, and being short 2 a year, it would take 150 years, well beyond the terms of your contract, before you ran out.
