Thinking of Getting an Ipod Touch

yeh, the router works otherwise, we have 3 laptops (all wireless) + desktop on that router that have no problems.
It is a secure network and the password has not changed. this is why i'm stumped. It worked fine when I first got my touch, immediately found the network, i see the network on the touch, it just will not connect.
how would i go about adding a new network?

Ditto !!!!!!!

The Touch works fine at home and at various hotspots, but here at work na-da.
It found the WiFi - it is secure - I entered the code - and it won't connect.
Baffling :confused3:confused3

My wifi at work is super-secure, and you can't get on the network unless you're on a company-owned device. I don't think that's the case with the op.

From the Apple support website, I found the following info:

Try Resetting Network Settings on the iPhone, go to Settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings.

If that does not work give us a little more information. what kind of wireless router is being used? What type of wireless security? How many characters are in the password?

This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398 provides general tips that will resolve most Wi-Fi connection issues.

Definitely looks like there's an issue with encryption on Linksys routers, per this post:

I also have iTouch, and could not connect to my wifi provided by my LinkSys WAG200G router, unless I turned the wifi security off. This of course was not acceptable. I did all the other fixes quoted in this and many other forums: upgrade firmware in router; reseting network settings on iTouch etc etc, nothing worked. My router works normally for all my other wifi devices (4 laptops, 2 Palms and a desktop)

Then I found the fix: On the LinkSys, there are many wifi security settings, including -
WPA personal (TKIP)
WPA2 Personal (AES)
WPA2 Mixed (TKIP + AES)

My network was set up for WPA2 Mixed, as I presume it is the most secure. However this security level and the WPA2 Personal do not allow my iTouch to connect.

Reverting to WPA personal (TKIP) however DOES allow the iTouch to connect. I can't explain why, maybe the iTouch is not AES capable, I don't know.

Try reverting to 'non AES' security on your router. Maybe this is the fix for you.

It's time for me to get a new Ipod, and I'm thinking about getting a Touch to replace my 30 G Classic. In a perfect world I would get an Iphone, but I have sold my sole to Verizon for another year. So the Touch seems like a good compromise. So I have a few questions:

*How good is the Wi Fi on the Touch?
* Will the apps work as well as on the Iphone, or is there
* I like to take my Ipod when I walk. Will it be much bulkier than the Classic?
* How is the battery life?

I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's opinions. I think it would be fun to have a new toy for the flight to Orlando next week. Thanks!

Melissa
First I've got to say that the Touch is the best purchase I've made in years. I absolutely love it.
I find the Wifi to be very good. Not quite as strong as I would like, but it works very well.
From what I've seen the apps work great on both the iPhone and Touch.
I don't find it to be bulky at all. I use mine when I walk/jog and it's never in the way.
The battery life really depends on what you are doing. Just listening to music with wifi off I feel as if I could go for days(probably in all reality about 30 hours).
I think I can honestly say you will not be disappointed.

this is very helpful and sounds like my problem. NOW, how do i go about fixing this? i haven't messed with the router since i set it up. where do i start?

OK, I see some tech questions and answers in this thread and I have one. I paid the $9.00 and got the Bluetooth upgrade. So far, when I put it in discover mode, it is not discovering any devices, including my macbook, and new car with bluetooth capability. My phone synced with my computer and car no problem. Any ideas on what I can do?

I too love my iPod touch, got it for mothers day as well. We have a MiFi card with sprint so I can be online at all times. I have an arm band that holds the touch for when I walk and it works great. I do sometime have issues with iTunes deleting apps and screwing up podcast retentions, but nothing my dear hubby cant fix for me.

Battery life on mine is great, as long as I do not play a high graphics game (like 1112). I have gone almost 3 days of just listening to music and podcast and messing around on a couple of apps and there still be some battery left.

If the iPhone was on another carrier beside AT&T (not a fan) I would have the phone, but the touch does about 90% of what the phone can do.

How do you like the MIFI?? I already have the air card with sprint so I thought of switching out to the MIFI. Have you used it with PC and Touch at the same time?

I went ahead and bought the 16 gig Touch. In fact I'm typing this reply on it right now. So far I have been very happy with it. Thanks for all the imput!

OK - I just started having trouble with my ipod touch. It is turning itself on. When I try to put it to sleep I get the red bar to slide to shut it off. If I shut it off after a while it turns back on with the red bar. When I turn it on I get the red bar again. I tried a reset and that didn't work. Do you think a restore would help? What happens to the 3.0 software I bought if I restore it?

The restore will be to 3.0 :)

This is great to read all these good reports because we just bought 2 ipod touches for my boys. They are turning 16 next week.

How does purchasing apps work? I do not want to link up our credit card to their touch, if that's how it even works.

After reading all this it makes me want one too! I love my Nintendo DS and this sounds even better. I love little gadgets. I have been holding out against ipods because they are much more expensive than a non ipod MP3 player. But this one sounds like it does so much more, now I'm interested. ;)

well they will need itunes on their computers, separate accounts for each kid unless they want to listen to the exact same music and have exact same apps. you WILL need to link a cc to the itunes account, separate cards i believe.

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but we have 3 touches in the house, 3 computers and 3 itunes accounts set up. we tried to use the same card for my son and it said it had to be a separate account.

once it's set up, you can purchase from the itunes store, alot are free, some are .99 OR if you're in a wifi area, you can purchse right there on your touch. i am not a gadget person but once i saw theirs, i had to have one too.

Ok, thank you. Can both purchase what they want from itunes from the same account? Actually DH already has an account there because people keep giving him itune gift cards and he has a a mac at work so downloads them there. My boys actually do like the same music. I guess the problem comes when they both want the same app but it says it has already been purchased? :confused3

i think so, as long as they dont' mind the same music on both ipods. every time you charge it on a pc (unless you use an ihome), all that music or anything you added or deleted from itunes , will go on to that ipod. my son doesn't like the same music as me,:scared1:, so i have my own account on my computer. if he had to charge HIS ipod on my computer, he would get all that "crappy" music, as he calls it, lol. all of his would be deleted from it.

no, once you purchased that app, it stays on your itunes as well. so i think they could have the same app. always check the available free ones, sometimes there's just an ad or something that shows up, so they make it free. ad-free's cost a little bit. then on the other hand, sometimes, the pay ones are worth buying, depends on the app.

I am still learning all this too! :goodvibes

Well it seems to have straightened itself out. When I got up yesterday morning it had turned itself on again. I shut it off and it's been working fine ever since.

Well, I meant they like the same music as each other, although they do like a lot of dad's music too. But certainly not enought to want to sync up with his. I have noticed a lot of kids going back to music of the 80's. :thumbsup2 You've been very helpful, thanks!

Yeh same here, my kids like the music from past decades. Mostly classic rock stuff, beatles, queen, zeppelin. never thought i'd be lending them cd's to load on their ipod, lol. haven't gone as far back as "records" though. too funny!

hope they all enjoy their ipods!!
