Thinking of Getting an Ipod Touch

It's time for me to get a new Ipod, and I'm thinking about getting a Touch to replace my 30 G Classic. In a perfect world I would get an Iphone, but I have sold my sole to Verizon for another year. So the Touch seems like a good compromise. So I have a few questions:

*How good is the Wi Fi on the Touch?
* Will the apps work as well as on the Iphone, or is there
* I like to take my Ipod when I walk. Will it be much bulkier than the Classic?
* How is the battery life?

I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's opinions. I think it would be fun to have a new toy for the flight to Orlando next week. Thanks!

Melissa

I don't know how big your Classic is, but my Touch is about half the thickness of my 160g Classic, and a similar footprint. Maybe a little wider, can't say for sure as the Touch is what's at hand right now.

The wi-fi seems to work pretty well. I have wi-fi at home, and it's nice to be able to download podcasts directly to the Touch, without syncing. Otherwise, I don't use too many apps that rely on wi-fi connections, since I don't have access to signal most of the time. The ones I do use (FB, Weather, Stocks), I've only checked at my home or my dad's, where I know there's access. I should really test it out at Panera or something one of these days.

Battery life is decent, books seem to suck more battery than listening to music would, but I've only run close to out of juice once, and that was at the end of a day where I spent 5 hours on a plane, reading a novel, listening to music and playing Bejeweled.

Love my Touch! I prefer Verizon service where I live, hence no iphone. If you are in a hot spot, the wifi works well. Not as well as on my laptop (I can't really get it out in the yard, but I can with my MacBook).

I use my old Nano for walks, I think the touch is too bulky. However, if you are used to a classic, it may not be an issue.

I LOVE apps! I use them all the time. Love love love the Kindle app. I have any book I want right in my pocket. I also love Pandora (only for WiFi though).

I think you will be happy with the Touch. I use it every day, and not only for music and podcasts.

Oh and BTW, the battery life is pretty good, although I'm obsessive about charging mine all the time so I have rarely run out.

I love my touch.....that doesn't sound right...let me try again...:lmao:
I love my ipod touch....
I bought the 32g and paid too much, a few months later the price went down $100. :confused3 I know if is over kill but I didn't know...
I listen to the Dis Unplugged and some genealogy podcasts. I have ever cd I own on it. Also videos. I use the wifi when ever I can get it. Of course I have it at home but so many places have it for free now. I have a app that scans and looks for open wifi. I check every email I have and it does it all at once. So very cool and so fast. No logging into each email.
There are so many apps. I had downloaded so many but I am now getting rid of them little by little. I do have some I really like.
I use the calender so much. I would be lost without it. I love how it syncs up with the one on my computer at home.
I have ATT service and I work there too. I didn't get the iphone because I will loose my little discount. We get nothing if we have the iphone. Don't get me wrong, I really, really want an iphone....maybe someday...
I have a hard clear plastic cover on it but got an arm strap for when I walk. The plastic cover has to come off but it is easy, just use a coin.

I never had a ipod before this but did have a mp3 player that died at 11 months old. I had purchased it at Walmart and got the insurance on it and they gave me all my money back and I got the touch. Got insurance again of course. I have had it since March of 2008 and no problems ever....

Go for it, you not be sorry!:woohoo:

You make a very convincing argument Denise! One more question: How many of the apps require wi fi?

Melissa

I just bought one today and I can't put it down! Get to listen to my first Dis Unplugged Podcast tomorrow on it! (Well first that I haven't listened to on my computer).

I got mine for Mother's Day. It's great. The only thing I would love is if Disney offered free wi-fi in the parks so I could utilize some of the apps there.

It does make me want an Iphone. I'm disgusted with Verizon so when our contract comes up November next year we will probably switch.

Let me think...google maps, the weather, stocks, emails, newspapers, radio...there are others but I just woke up and need my coffee to think! :surfweb: there are even apps with maps of the Disney parks...but I think you need wifi for that..
With the iphone you can always use more of the apps all the time. (you also pay for it in your data package)
You are limited sometimes without wifi but you tend to find out where the hotspots for wifi are. My grocery store, where I shop, has free wifi which is nice.

I used to get free wifi from someone around one of my offices...now it is gone. You can google the town you are in and see where the free wifi is. I love the app I have that looks for the wifi.

Every person that I have met that has a touch loves it.....

I love my fairly new iPod Touch. I love apps, and wish I had more money to buy more, but I have found some pretty cool free/cheap apps too!

One thing to keep in mind, the normal product cycle for the iPod os for a new one to be released every September. The first gen and second gen touch's were released like that last September and the previous September. If you can wait, you may want to. Even if you don't want the third gen iPod Touch, the 2nd generation will likely get a price cut.

GET ONE NOW!! I love my itouch..but then of course I am 16 and I'm really into having the latest stuff but I like being able to acess the internet while listening to the Dis Unplugged XD i really recomend getting one.

I too love my iPod touch, got it for mothers day as well. We have a MiFi card with sprint so I can be online at all times. I have an arm band that holds the touch for when I walk and it works great. I do sometime have issues with iTunes deleting apps and screwing up podcast retentions, but nothing my dear hubby cant fix for me.

Battery life on mine is great, as long as I do not play a high graphics game (like 1112). I have gone almost 3 days of just listening to music and podcast and messing around on a couple of apps and there still be some battery left.

If the iPhone was on another carrier beside AT&T (not a fan) I would have the phone, but the touch does about 90% of what the phone can do.

I love my iTouch!

It is well worth the price!! DH and I are saving up for iPhones!! Because we love our iTouch's so much!! :lovestruc

I also love my Ipod Touch...using it to post right now! It is awesome, but I do get a bit jealous of DH when he can use Internet anywhere and take pics/call on his Iphone. The Touch is a nice alternative though:) I do not have a problem with Wi Fi or the battery life. I keep it charged and it goes with me all the time...to work, in the car, the gym! My kids love it to and keeps them entertained at restaurants and on car trips. If you get one you will not regret it:)

Oh, I wish you hadn't told me that! I would need to buy it before I leave for WDW next Sat!

I have an ipod touch and I love it, the battery life on it is great when listening to music, but obviously when watching movies and some apps take more power so doesn't last as long, I use the wifi on it at home, work and travel and found it works great I have never had any problems with it, I love all the apps and love reading books on it also. hope this helps:lovestruc

We're a "touch" family, having 3 bought at macmall.com...best price i could find. However, for some reason, the wi fi at home no longer works on any of them. Not sure what the problem is, has to be the router i guess but it worked when we first got them. It works fine at wi fi hotspots otherwise.

anybody out there know what causes that?

I LOVE my itouch! WiFi works wonderfully! I have a 7 acre yard and I can spread out a blanket and lay just about anywhere and still access the internet on my itouch. I suppose that all depends on your wifi provider though because at my DD dance studio it is limited to inside the building. It won't even work outside the front door. There are SO many great apps that are free! Mouseworld radio just got a free app so you can listen to the sounds of WDW while doing your house work:goodvibes And the WDW menu app was so great for us while we were in the parks and wanted to check menus before we picked a CS. This app doesn't use wifi so it is always available. You can also get apps that download and store files off of your computer. This came in the most handy at WDW. I had all of my planning files and reservation information right there in the palm of my hand. Also, you never really have to worry about plugging this into your computer. You can download pretty much everything you need right through wifi. The new 3.0 update even always you to get audio books and movies through wifi now. So if you buy wall charger forget about always having to use your computer to charge and sync.I never liked to do that. I always thought it was a hassle. OMG! I could go on forever and ever! They are the greatest! Now if AT&T would expand coverage to my tiny little town here in MN so I could get an iphone I would be in heaven!

PS-for walking...I wear mine on an arm band or around my neck and it doesn't bother me at all. It is very light. Plus, i have a free app that tracks the miles and calories burned on my walks and runs. It is SO nice to go jogging and have a little voice in your ear tell you your progress ever so often. And you can still listen to the DIS podcast while it tracks your walk or run.:thumbsup2

Um... is the router working otherwise? Does the Touch see a wireless network when you go to Settings? Can a computer connect wirelessly to your home network? You shouldn't have problems getting a Touch to connect if a computer can.

Is the network secured? If so, has it always been secure? If it's always been secure, did something happen that the password/key needed to be reset? If it's newly secured (since the last time you were able to connect the Touch to the network), you may need to add a new network with the password in order to get it to connect.

Those would be my thoughts as to why you couldn't connect.

yeh, the router works otherwise, we have 3 laptops (all wireless) + desktop on that router that have no problems.
It is a secure network and the password has not changed. this is why i'm stumped. It worked fine when I first got my touch, immediately found the network, i see the network on the touch, it just will not connect.
how would i go about adding a new network?

Try going to settings & making it find your wi-fi again. It's picking up your network, not a neighbor's, right?

I'm not a techie, and that's really all I've got. Weird.
