Thinking of getting a part time job

I could care less what other people think of me. I live me life according to what's right for myself and my family. As far as getting a PT job....I would be far more concerned with the great lessons that it teaches my children than what so called friends might think. BTW, real friends would be happy for you.

I have a few friends that work at Costco and they are paid VERY well. It's nearly impossible to get a job there though. You really have to know someone that can help you get hired and even then your best chance is to get hired on as a Christmas temp and then they might keep you after. BUT, the holiday temp people work all the crappy shifts.

Honestly I wouldn't care what others think and if you were my friend I would think you had a job. That's it.
But a bit of unsolicited advice, if you want to go into law, look for a job at a law firm. Filing, answering phone etc to start. Get some experience and connections.

This. If you want to go into law, a profession under tremendous pressure right now, start networking immediately!

As to what others may think, I cannot answer for them. I doubt I'd think anything of it, aside from saying hello if I saw you in that capacity. Then again, one of our friends, whose husband is quite successful, works a few shifts a month at Pottery Barn Kids. Apparently he teased her that she spends so much money there, she should get a job there and sign her paychecks directly back over. So she did, and basically does, but gets a discount to boot!

I should have said the portion on credit cards is what we spend while we are there,Tips toys and what not. I did not my put my entire vacation on credit cards.

Well....I work as the secretary of the small private school my boys attend; I get paid minimum wage. If any of the other parents look down on me for it, no one has ever made it known to me. I wouldn't care if they did, I am happy working there after being miserable for several years in a hospital job that paid more than twice as much.

Why do you feel like you need to clarify. It's not anyone's business how you pay for your vacation.

The credit card shaming here is unreal.

I wonder if you should think a little differently about this part time job.

What if you worked part time for a law firm? That way you're building your resume for when you graduate, as well as getting an inside idea of the different types of law making your career path more clear.

I see no shame or harm in getting any job at all, but it would be smart to get a job that gets your career (as an attorney) going rather than just pays some bills. That also makes it easier to justify any time away from home/kids/driving to activities, etc.

So, in essence, I agree with the others, get a PT job that is a career builder.

Do you look down on your children's friends parents who work in lower wage jobs?

And has anyone done this applied for a job to pay for additional vacations and other extras?

I think this depends very heavily on your location and social circle. There is a certain subset of our social circle that thinks that way - SAHMs are the norm and a wife working is viewed as a reflection on the breadwinner's income or the family's financial position. But on the other hand, there's another group that expects a woman to reenter the workforce when the kids hit school age whether the money is needed or not. And in the more reasonable middle there are those of us who just make the decisions that fit our family's needs at any given time.

Personally, I tend to ignore the opinions of others when it comes to these things. It isn't their budget and it isn't their business whether you're working to keep the lights on, to go to Disney every year, or to bolster your retirement fund. I've been a SAHM for 15 years and I'm about 18 months from finishing my bachelors' in web design. The long-term plan right now is for me to take my time and build a freelance/from-home business rather than looking for a job, but we're considering a private high school for DD12. If we go in that direction I'll absolutely be looking for any part-time job that will fit our schedules; I'm not going to stay at home and have to choose between tuition and travel.

DH worked pt for a caterer at events. He could accept or reject any job. Probably wouldn't run into your neighbors doing that! He never did.

One if my extra gigs is running the concessions for my daughter's sports team. I save 800
Per year in her team fees. And you don't pay tax on discounts!! Best if all most folks just think I am a volunteer like they are.... And feel bad that they don't support the team like I do lol!!!

I have 2 jobs - I have an office job during the day (9am-5:30pm) and I also deliver newspapers at 3am.

I know that there are people who look at me differently because I deliver papers or because I have 2 jobs.

I do not care what people think of my situation. I do what I do in order to take care of my family. It is none of anyone else's business what I do.

By the way, delivering papers are a great source of extra income and would not interfere with family or school hours.

When do you sleep?

Yes. As a former SAHM who went to law school while I had kids, building up a résumé with legal work is going to make the difference, unless you already have job lined up.

I did both paid and unpaid work build up my résumé and get references.

The logic of people is messed up...

Most people "charge" a vacation and pay it off over the next year or 2 if not more. THOSE PEOPLE ARE BROKE!

More people need to have your logic... Vacation but do whatever it takes to pay it off ASAP. So if you choose get a job, hold your head high and swipe your so called friends credit cards at check out with a smile knowing that you are enabling your family to enjoy vacations without living in a giant hole of debt.

FYI- our family doctor (very well known and respected) worked his way through med school as a McDonald's cashier!

My opinion is this: there is no shame in work! How you choose to spend the money you earn and whether it is "needed money" or not. I wouldn't look down at anyone for working in whatever capacity they chose to.

I work in an office 37.5 hours a week and work at McDonalds parttime appx 20 to 24 hours per week.

The extra money is nice and I personally love working there...totally different than my day job...when people I know from my office job first see me they seem shocked but alot have told me that they are also thinking about picking up a second job.

It looks like the OP is pretty far from actually getting into law school. You might want to think about how hard that is and concentrate on your classes and getting relevant experience, whether paid or unpaid, to help you application if that is really your goal.
