We went to SeaWorld this weekend with some friends and they had a Pyrnees there. He was a wonderful dog. From talking to the trainer, and also from the internet, it seems a breed that would do well with us. Anyone have any experience with them or any other advice?

Hmmm...you want to go from a Pug (assuming from your sig) to a Pyr? Are you sure? That would be my first question.

Lets see... a brief good and bad...

They are HUGE. They will require a fair amount of coat maintainence. They are friendly. They are big teddy bears. They are herd animals. They drool, they will eat a lot. it will be important to exercise them on good walks/whatever you choose to keep them fit- more so than the pug. they are good with kids of all ages. They can be messy. (like shedding hair, tracking in mud, carrying leaves, etc on their coats)

They are great for hugging, lounging around and guard dogs. Please be sure to check with a local Great Pyr Rescue group. Im sure if you do a google search you will find one in your state. Or check on www.petfinder.com

good luck!! They are great dogs!

Growing up we had a Great Pyrenees. He was huge, white, loveable and not very smart. He loved being outside. Hated being inside (which was good since we lived in a small house at the time). Though we had a big backyard and garage where he loved to sleep, it was too small for him. You really need some land and room for them to run. He slobbered a lot and need combing all the time. Because he was an outside dog he was rarely clean. If we gave him a bath he would roll in the dirt as soon as he could. We also had a small mutt that stayed in the house and they were the best of friends, but the small dog was definitely the boss. It was a riot to watch them play. The Pyrenees was very friendly, loved kids and would go with anyone. In fact, one of the neighborhood children took him to school with her for Show-and-Tell. My father couldn't believe it when the school principal called and told him to come get our dog. They are very nice dogs and I have a lot of great memories of ours. Thanks for helping bring them back. Jay
