Hi:

I was just wondering what is a Nice beach area on the ocean that is fairly close to Orlando/WDW?

I have a rental car, and my Daughter has never been to a beach on the ocean....it might be worth skipping a day at disney (or part of a day) to go for a drive to a Nice BEach area.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

It is closer to go to the Atlantic side. We will be doing Cocoa Beach. It is about a 1 1/2hr drive.

Glad you posted this!! I'd like to take the boys if it's not too cold..

Would Dec be way too cold to even think about driving to the beach? We have 3 "down" days so I thought they'd enjoy this..

I found Coco beach way to touristy and crowded when we went about 6 years ago... we started going to ClearWater beach instead.. it's a little further away, but its beautiful, and not nearly as crowded.. great for dolphin watching too..

The local weather channel will have the air and ocean temperatures posted. It certainly shouldn't be too cold to go there unless you have an unusually cold day (they had plenty of them last winter) but you will be able to judge for yourself if it's worth a visit.

Been there.. the treasure island area was VERY nice.

What about the oil spill.....can you smell/see it over there??????

Thumbs up for Clearwater/St Petes from us. We take a day out every trip to go there and relax on the beach/swim in the ocean. We also have a drive across the fantastic structure that is The Sunshine Skyway. Best dollar ever spent!! It's become a tradition for us now (6 times so far, 7th in less than 2 weeks !!)

Been there...gulf side is less attractive for me...colder winds, OIL SPILL, and beach made of sea shells make it somewhat less attractive. Although the treasure island area was VERY nice.

I'd suggest not writing off the gulf coast. Though you may have visited a beach over there that was largely made of shells or crushed shells that isn't the only type of gulf beach that you can find. We like the beaches at the Fort De Soto county park (to the south of St. Petersburg) with its nice sandy beach and warm gulf coastal water. While it may be an element of the time of the year that you've visited, we've found that the Atlantic coast weather at the beaches feature much colder, windy temperatures than on the gulf side.

As for the oil spill, I understand that the concern had been for the Key West area and (though I think it's counter-intuitive) the Atlantic side beaches. Based on what some of my Florida friends say none of those concerns have been realized - at least so far.

Despite all of that, we like Cocoa Beach, too - just a different beach experience with the rougher wave action, colder water, and the touristy town of Cocoa Beach (and I don't mean any of that in a negative way). And, while we haven't visited them, there are beaches - like Melbourne Beach - that stretch to the south of Cocoa Beach just off route A1A that might be less touristy.

Cocoa Beach is about an hour east of the general Disney area via state route 528. Fort De Soto park is about two hours (I-4, I-275, state route 679/Pinellas Bayway South).

Thanks!

I removed the sea shell beach and cold winds from my post, as that was most likely related to the area/time of year I was there.
