Thinking of driving from NY. What beach along the route to stay a few days?

We are a family of 5 and would like to hit Washington DC, then hit a beach for a few days on our way down. I looked into Outer Banks but it really seems to take you out of the way. Are there other beaches to hit and stay for a few days along the route to Disney? Myrtle Beach seems like a good match but DH went as a kid and has bad memories. He wants someplace nicer. Can't wait to hear all the wonderful ideas.:goodvibes Then on the way home, where would you stop? No way our family could handle straight through in the car. We are all off for the summer so time is not a problem.

Why don't you start your Disney experaince early and stay at Disney's Hilton Head resort.

I second Hilton Head too, even though I know nothing about the Disney resort. We have been going to HHI for years...love it there!

I looked into it and the site says that it is not on the beach. Do you know how far the beach is? I have been searching and the price is right with codes out there. Most others are budget busters. DH really wants to stay on a beach and I want to make him happy.

It is not on the beach...it is in Shelter Cove, kind of on the opposite side of the island from the beach, but in a wonderful shopping/dining area around a marina. I think that Disney has a separate beach house in Palmetto Dunes, right near the Hilton I believe and provides a shuttle to the beach--it would be a couple miles and across the main road on the island. We just never looked into staying there, because, like your DH, we like to be able to just walk out the door to the beach and not have to mess with getting wet, sandy kids into a vehicle of any type!

Thank you so much. I was confused after looking at pictures but what you are saying makes perfect sense. So now I need to find budget friendly accomodations in the summer, on the beach.

HHI is beautiful! We stayed in the Sea Pines area. We were only a short (like less than five minutes) walk/bike ride to the beach. It was one of our favorite vacations. (Honestly, my husband would much rather go there than Disney this year!)

We also enjoyed the entire Charleston, SC area-lots of islands/beaches there too.

We stayed at the SeaCrest resort in the Coligny plaza area last summer and just booked there again for this July. The location is wonderful...very short walk to the beach, access to an oceanfront pool, right across the street from the Coligny Plaza restaurant/shopping area and a grocery store. The beach area was wonderful with huge tide pools...we found hermit crabs, star fish, sand dollars etc.

I have also stayed at the Hilton, which is a beautiful hotel, right on the beach, for as low as $125/night so just keep looking.

Yes, those are our two repeating vacations...Disney and Hilton Head. We're hooked!

Thank you both so much. I am thinking of HH for a couple of days on the way down and then again on the way back home. It would give us needed rest before Disney and after.:goodvibes Glad to hear there are options in the $125 range. I thought I would have a hard time finding things under $200.
