We bought resale at AKL a few years ago and love it... But I wish we had more points.. I am thinking about buying at vero beach since its $55 vs $95 per point. I understand that we would be somewhat limited on the 11 month window bookings.... But I was thinking that I could just do my one time transfer of points from the vero beach to AKL when needed (which will probably be most years). I think this could work well and save us a ton of cash... What do you think?? Is there something I am not thinking of in regards to transferring pts to take advantage of an 11 month window...

1. Even when transferred, points retain their home resort. You don't get the 11 month advantage at AKV with VB points.

2. You're forgetting about maintenance fees. Those "cheap" points will be more expensive than buying AKV points after 8 or 9 years.

Thanks for the reply... So far everything I have read says that if you transfer points to a contract the computer thinks they are those resorts points... I may have to call ms and ask.. I didn't look at maintenance fees and I see veto beach is higher... So maybe Hilton head would be better as their maintenance fees are more in line with what I pay at AKL

Curious where you saw that. It's completely untrue.

Here's my evaluation of relative value from last night. If you want cheap points, but SSR.

I saw it on a DVC specific site for DVC owners,on their transferring points section... It does state that the points retain home resort but that the computer assumes they are the resort points into the resort they were transferred into.... Posted below from their site

  • According to the Public Offering Statement, transferred points retain their own Home resort priority. In other words, if Beach Club Villa points are transferred to an owner whose own contract is at Old Key West, the BCV points can be used to reserve a room at BCV within the 11 month window. However, DVC’s computer system is unable to track these transactions properly. When the BCV points are transferred to an OKW owner, they appear to be OKW points. Using those points to book a room at BCV within the 11 month window will most likely require some persistence on the part of the member making the reservation, and a supervisory override by DVC to complete the booking.

SSR might be an option too...I really like the idea of those treehouse villas and I could do the bank/borrow system to stay at ea resort every other yr.... Of course I love the boardwalk too... But no cheap pts there

That information pre-dates online booking. The process has changed significantly since then. Transferred points don't show up in your account at all. They're more like a "note" on your account that only MS can see.

I think that was the way it used to be, but not the way things are now.

I agree. I remember many years ago transferred points would morph from their original resort to the resort of the contract into which they were transferred. This was a real problem because there were professional renters that took advantage of this and overwhelmed resorts like BCV, booking rooms with morphed non-BCV points they had transferred in from other members. DVC finally had to do something about it and the solution was to enforce the "one transfer in or out per UY" rule. This made it easier for MS to track point transfers and finally shut the door on point morphing.

OP: You absolutely will not be able to use non-AKV transferred points at AKV. If you need more points to use at the 11-month window you will either need to buy more AKV points or get a point transfer from another AKV owner. Since transferred points retain their home resort and UY, if you transfer in AKV points you can use them to book AKV 11 months out.

If you want cheaper points, you can buy a different resort such as SSR and use those points to extend an 11-month AKV booking at the 7-month window, subject to availability.
