Thinking about an iphone/smartphone-give me your thoughts

I hear lots about apps and such and think it may be for me. I have ATT mobile and plan on keeping it. I can upgrade my phones in July. The refurb'ed iphone is $99 right now 3 gig I believe. My husband wants a different phone than he has now but is happy with a basic phone.
Can I use apps on only iphones? Other than internet access is there any other nice features? Free useful apps?
Can I justify the cost and upgrade in $$ in other words? Right now we have very basic service and free LG phones with voice only, no texting nothing.

It isn't just the new phone cost, you need to factor in the data plan that you will need to add on to use the cool features of the iphone.

I would pony up the extra money for the 3GS phone. It is much much faster. I love the checkbook app (I think it was .99). It is so easy to use and I enter my receipts immediately. My budgeting is so much easier now.
