I don't know why but this made me almost teary. What a wonderful thing to say. I know so many people who have said they walked down that aisle knowing they shouldn't but didn't know how to get out of it.
My dad always says if you are not early you're late. And he also says "Ball Game!" when someone is standing in front of the TV.
When I was young, he would yell at my brother's and me and would sometimes mix his words up. One that comes to mind is he said "It's time for bed, go upstairs and brush your hair and comb your teeth. " My brother's and I all say this to our kids now at bed time. We turned it into a family tradition!
"My brother and I know everything...he knows the answer to this one."
This was the late seventies/early eighties and my uncle lived in a different part of the world. This was before the Internet and cheap phone rates. And I believed my dad and vowed to remember to ask my uncle when he visited us. But I never remembered the question.
It was a kind of "circle of life, we're all connected, no person is an island" kind of thing. Nothing sinister or arrogant, my siblings and I were always taught (and my DW and I teach our children the same thing) that we all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us and our surname is representative of that in our family. Most of us received my mother's maiden name as a middle name, as well, as part of the same value system.
Oh, I forgot this gem: "if you end up pregnant, dont worry--we can send you to a home for unwed mothers." Seriously. He said it as though that was a great thing. (This was in the early 70s when having a baby out of wedlock was the worst thing that could ever happen). He completely refused to believe that I wasn't sexually active. Heck, that didn't even happen until I was out of college! And my first baby was born when I was 30! Sheesh...
When my brother was thirsty he would say, "I'm thirsty." To which my father would answer, "I'm Friday. How do you do." Within these last few days, I'm finding myself answering in the same way my father did when DH and/or DS say they are thirsty!

When you get married you're not just marrying the man you are marrying the WHOLE family some days I wish I would have listened to dad a little more carefully
The greatest thing my dad ever said to me he said just before we walked down the aisle on my wedding day. He said, "Are you sure this is what you want forever and ever?"I said, yes. He said, "If it isn't you and I walk right out that door right now."
To this day he has our backs and tells my husband (25 years later) if you aren't happy I'll take her back! haha
My dad worked night shift so I'd be going to bed when he was getting up to go. He'd come and tuck my covers in real tight (love that) give me a kiss good bye and say, "Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite."
If he'd ever catch me picking my underwear out of my butt, he'd always say, "You going to the show?" I'd say, No! and he'd say, "then why you picking your seat?"
And the famous, "if he jumps off the bridge you gonna jump too?"
Another, "when the man upstairs calls your number it's your turn to go"
