Things you wished you asked before you bought.

I am ready to buy. I am going to talk to a sales person tomorrow, and I am sure he will clarify things for me, but I just thought I would ask you guys for some pointers of things, you wished you had asked before you bought.

I think I understand the whole banking and borrowing of points, maybe some could explain a little so I can ask intelligent questions about changing rooms. Does that cost money? Like I would want to do 4 night in a studio, and then 6 nights in a 1 bdr All in one 10 day trip. How does that work.

Thanks in advance. I am either going to buy soon then have more questions or make up my mind not to and put it out of my head.

There is no trick to reserving two different types of rooms, or rooms at two different resorts in one vacation. As long as you have enough points, just tell member services what you want. They will make two different reservations that they can "link" together so they know they both go together in one vacation. You would check in as usual on the first day of your vacation, and then you will need to check in again on the day that you switch rooms.

There is nothing that I wish I asked that I didn't ask before buying, but I did make sure I understood about the 7 vs 11 month reservation window, the circumstances in which reservation points for a room could go up in the future, what would happen if Vero didn't build out the entire resort they have planned (I was purchasing at Vero)...

The only time you get charged for changing rooms is if you check-in and then decide you want to move because of the view/location. For example, you check into Boardwalk and request a Boardwalk view. They don't have one the day you check-in, but there will be one the next day. You would have to pay the cleaning fee ($25 studio, $30 1 BR, $40 2 BR, $50 GV). If your reservation is setup to change type of rooms, then there is not a charge. I guess they did this to discourage people from requesting room changes because of views.

I'll keep you posted. I should know within the week whether I am going to commit. I am a little nervous jsut because it is a big commitment. We haven't bought a house yet for fear of commitment. But this is at least a fun commitment. I wish I could predict the future. I can justify the purchase now and for the future as far as 20 years, but what concerns me is the 25-40 years down the road. What will Disney be like then? Just think about how much it has changed recently.

Thanks for the help.

Things I wish I'd asked before buying -

I wish I'd asked that all the conversation be put in writing and signed by the guide, on behalf of DVC.

Take the time to read all the pages of fine print. You'll have a better idea of what you are buying and will be less likely to be disappointed if you find that the "real" rules are different than what you understood your guide to say.

I still love DVC, and did read the fine print. I've seen lots of messages here from people who didn't read it and instead relied on verbal info from their guides and were later disappointed.

Go for it !!
Although nothing is perfect, the DVC is terrific. We purchased at OKW in 1993 and have purchased 2 more add ons since then. As our family has grown we found that we needed more points for larger accomodations and more frequent visits. The cruise line is another real plus for joining our "club". This is the only time share that I have ever heard of where it has appreciated in value. In fact you can not even sell, for any price, most other time shares. That says a lot about Disney and the DVC.

Make sure you buy where you plan on staying the most. Don't be tempted by sales incentives to buy somewhere else. They have been selling Hilton Head and Vero Beach for over 5 years and they are still not sold out yet. If you plan on staying at WDW then buy a DVC resort there.

I wish we would have looked into buying a resale instead of buying through Disney. We paid cash and could have saved a small fortune had we gone the resale route. There's absolutely no difference between buying a resale or directly through Disney. Whenever we add-on in the future, we'd definitely buy a small BWV resale contract.

Where is the elevator?

How can you put all six of us and our luggage and groceries in a 2 BR on the third floor of a building that has no elevator?

May I have a bus schedule....that the bus driver also knows about?

Now that you told me since I as an owner can put as many people as I want in a GV, can you wait here while I find a tape recorder?
(Note: was not my sales rep; happened on a later tour)

OKW 8/94

The only thing I wish I knew more about was selecting our use year. We toured in May 1997, and at the time they were welling December 1996 use years.

If our vacation habits brought us to WDW every May, and December use year works fine. But, we really like to vacation late fall, early December, which can cause problems if you have to cancel (which I did due to DH needing back surgery) and have no window available to bank the points. Think about the time of year your family will vacation at WDW and ask for a use year that is 6 months prior to that month. Use year was the only thing that our guide kind of glossed over, and because we knew nothing about DVC prior to the sales presentation, we purchased what they were offering at the time. It isn't a huge concern to us, just something we wish we had known more about and had more input in the selection.

From our standpoint, What we have received from DVC is exactly what our guide presented to us back in 1997. She fully explained the items that were "perks" and those that we part of the contract. We never once felt like we had attended a time share presentation! We have enjoyed every minute of our DVC membership!

Good luck with your decision!
