Things to love about the fall

Autumn has always been my favorite time of the year, besides the month of December.

I love the leaves changing colors on the trees and falling to the ground.

The crisp air, the smells. Harvest time on the farm. Pumpkins, corn shocks, autumn-scented candles burning in the house, making soups/breads, DH's birthday, our wedding anniversary, cooler days/nights, wearing sweatshirts and jeans again, the first frost of the season and how it sparkles on the grass, no more mowing the lawn, being able to have windows open during the day instead of running the air conditioner. Probably lots more. :)

The only thing I don't like about autumn, is having to winterize the camper the beginning of October. No more camping trips until spring. :(

I so just had this thought yesterday -- received alot of catalogs and nearly every one of them had fall decorations and our stores are already stocking the shelves with halloween & Thanksgiving items!

So aside from what you've already listed, for me, the other best things about autumn are:
DH and DD often go hunting which means there are times when I have a blissfully quiet weekend to do ANYTHING I WANT (usually shopping for antiques, hiking at a local park, taking in a movie I want to see, or just going for a drive and stopping to take any pictures I want to)

Leaving the windows open all-day and bundling under a cozy quilt if it gets a bit too chilly at night

"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" -- we watch this over and over and over

Going to the local pumpkin patch for a hayride to the corn mazes and picking our own pumpkin from the vine

Bringing out my "fall" scented oils and candles from Yankee Candle & BBW (specifically Autumn Wreath, Leaves, Pumpkin, and Spiced Cider)

Making homemade chilli and vegetable stew

Eating candy corn w/ dry roasted peanuts -- oh, so good!!!

Drinking spiced cider

Homemade caramel apples and topping them any way we want (DD comes up with some real doozies)

Having my annual lunch/movie with the ladies in my family (we're all really close). I absolutely love planning this get-together ... this year, I've discovered Etsy, so I've already got the invitations, some decorations, and "treats" ready to go!

Filling bird feeders and watching the birds/squirrels

Wearing my comfy clothes (fleece 1/2-zip shirts, flannel shirts, "cushy" sweaters with khakis & my trusty LL Bean mocs)

Local fall festivals

Ghost stories and hayrides at the local state parks

Raking piles of leaves JUST so we can jump into them (yes, we actually do this)

I guess there's really not anything I DON'T like about the season :rotfl:

I love the fall. Unfortunately, in Florida, where I just moved from, most of the fall is a lot like the summer. I haven't been through a Louisiana fall yet, but hopefully it is a bit cooler/nicer.

My favorite things about it:
My birthday! (September 26)
Halloween
Pumpkins & everything pumpkin flavored that seems to come out in the fall
Watching Halloween movies for days on end
El Día de los Muertos (I'm part Mexican)
Cooler weather & less humidity
Being able to wear coats & sweaters
Fall colors (oranges, dark reds, browns)
Opening the windows & turning off the ac
And when I lived in Virginia, I loved seeing the leaves change. I miss it so much.

I adore fall. It is my very favorite season. In fact I think the only thing I DON'T love about fall is the knowledge that winter is right around the corner. I ABHOR winter, and in Montana I can look forward to at least 6 months of it. YUCK.

Things I love about fall:

Back to school. I love my kids, really, I do. But by the end of August, they are bored, and I am "played" out. Besides I just love the nostalgic back-to-school season; new supplies, new clothes, a fresh start, etc. This is my DD14's first year of high school and marching band, and I am really looking forward to going to high school football games and parades to watch the band march and play.

The smell of woodsmoke on a chilly misty morning.

Days that never get above 75°. I am one for moderate temperatures. I can't stand really cold days, but I wilt and die when it gets above 85°.

Fall Decor. Fall is my favorite decorating season. I have boxes and boxes of leaf-pumpkin-and-scarecrow themed decor and can't wait to put it out. I have to force myself to wait till September. I am already planning my fall plantings for my floral baskets. :flower3:

Halloween. My favorite holiday. I love everything about it, and start decorating and celebrating it in big and little ways on Oct.1st. Must watch all the Halloween DVDs many times. :happytv:

Cool enough to cook and enjoy my favorite foods. My family loves homemade soups, stews, roasted turkey, chili, and other things that just don't taste right when its 90° outside.

The end of forest fire season. We can have some really bad fires in our area. Usually by the first of October its cool enough (and usually there is snow on the tops of the mountains!) that if we have any fires they are out.

Baseball AND football on Tv all in one month!

And while we are on the subject of TV :happytv:, all my favorite shows come back! Summertime is such a TV wasteland, but in September suddenly there's things to watch again!

Of course, I do get melancholy this time of year. :sad1: Summers in Montana are SO darn short. It really doesn't get warm till the middle of June, it gets much much cooler by September, and there's snow on the tops of the peaks usually by mid October. It is not unheard-of at all to Trick-or-Treat in the snow. :sad2: It just seems that we no sooner get geared up for summer - picnics planned, lake outings to go to, fishing licenses bought - and then POOF too late, its gone again.

And had I mentioned I ABHOR winter??!?

DH and I were just talking about what we were looking forward to with Fall right around the Corner. Our list is:

The Johnny Appleseed Festival

The Kendallville Apple Festival

bon fires

hot apple cider

the leaves changing

High School Football games

High School Marching Band contest

hayrides

Halloween decorations outside

Thanksgiving decorations outside

the smell that the air gets Sept thru Nov.

Yep.....we like the fall season around our house.

Hi from another Louisianian! It's probably better here than in southern Florida, but not too much, I'm sad to say. I haven't worn a sweater in the fall since around 1989.

Fall is my favorite time of year but everyone always laughs at me as we don't really get an autumn here. It's basically a slightly cooler version of summer until November & then cooler still, but never the "crisp" fall air you get in northern states. Shoot, we have to turn on the AC on Christmas most days to get that cold feeling. :sad2:

I almost always travel north for a week or two in the fall just to get my pumpkin-loving/leaf-peeping/apple-cider-sipping self a taste of "real autumn." This year it's a week in the Smoky Mountains in mid-October. I look forward to these trips as much as my yearly Disney trip. :teeth:

Still, I'd give anything to be able to move to one of the states that have all the great fall activities & cool temps. That town where a PP mentioned the themed Halloweens made me sigh out loud in envy. What I'd give to have many weekends to enjoy hiking, apple picking, harvest festivals, etc. Maybe someday! :upsidedow

A few of my favorites:
  • All the natural decorations - PUMPKINS! GOURDS! HAY STACKS! MUMS!
  • Crisp air
  • Cool morning mists
  • Crunchy leaves under foot
  • Apples - cider, candy, caramel, pies, you name it - I love it. My kitchen is all apples.
  • Bright blue skies
  • S'mores!
  • Halloween & Thanksgiving

I love Fall!!! It is my favorite season!

I love picking apples and getting cider and donuts
going to pick pumpkins and wearing a big cozy sweater
watching Halloween specials on TV and DVD
Halloween night when the trick or treaters come to the door (next Halloween I will have a little one to dress up :lovestruc)
Caramel Apple Spice from Starbucks
Candy corn and candy pumpkins - yum!
Having fires in the fireplace and roasting marshmallows
A mug of hot tea and reading a book

I agree I love Autumn/Fall it's my favorite season!

I love that I can actually wear tights under my dresses and skirts. And I can wear boots. (This makes me want to go shopping for Fall/Winter clothes!)

That the Holidays are getting closer.

The weather I cannot stand hot weather as a native Texan I've learned to spend my summers indoors!

Being able to cook meals like stews.

Apple picking & decorating for fall.
Cool nights to sleep with the windows open..

(still hate the cold & short days, summer person here)

Halloween(The Great Pumpkin), decorating the house and yard with Fall themed items, the GORGEOUS colors the leaves turn, hayrides, the breathtaking blue/black/pinks and oranges of the sky at dusk...I could go on and on but I believe all I love about Fall has been mentioned! :goodvibes

One thing I always look forward to in Fall is the absence of humidity and certain bugs! Gone are the horseflies and mosquitoes, Japanese Beetles and other horrific summertime pests!

Years ago, I realized my "New Year" started in the Fall, not January 1st.

Going back to school signified life starting anew, that feeling never left me.

Isn't it obvious, the kids are back in school!!!!!!!! :cool1: J/K, Fall is my absolute favorite season. I love the brilliant colors when the leaves change, and the cool crisp air. I love going apple picking and sipping warm cider wearing my favorite sweater. I love breaking out my food scented candles that have been packed away all summer, and decorating the house.
When the leaves fall I love raking them into huge piles and having the kids jump in them and make our own scarecrow, and of course the smell and sounds of the crunchy leaves are the best. September is still summer like, so I can't wait for October!!!

I love Autumn! I actually think I get depressed in the summer. Maybe its the heat... I dunno. I LOVE colors, leaves, apples, pumkins, haunted woods, house decorating (we do a pirates theme in the front yard!) cooking, taking walks again (the heat is gone!) and bestest of all... going to the coast and wearing sweatshirts and lighting beach fires. :cloud9:

I am loving reading all of these favorites. It makes me smile to think about all the good stuff waiting for me in a few weeks, thank you for so many good vibes, I need them to get me through the humidity of August :goodvibes I forgot a bunch that you guys reminded me of just now:goodvibes. Ahhh, the one about frost reminded me how much I love the way the grass freezes up with the first frost and watching it melt along the lines of my home's shadow as the sun rises in the morning... breathtaking.

How about that, the best things in life really are free:cloud9:

I LOVE AUTUMN!! :goodvibes :cool1::car:

crisp weather

open windows

sweatshirts

homemade beef stew & biscuits

pumpkin farm visit w/grands = hayride, crushed apple cider & pumpkin donuts

annual drive in mountains to leaf peep

Thanksgiving family feast

yummy pumpkin' pie

our long walks

family campfires w/weiners, s'mores & hot chocolate

fall scented candles

grands soccer & football

colorful mums

Reasons to like the Fall:

cooler weather (using the AC less, more open windows)
less fog on the Coast
my birthday
our Anniversary
younger DS & DDIL's First Anniversary
closer to our December Disney trip
hockey season

And while we are on the subject of TV :happytv:, all my favorite shows come back! Summertime is such a TV wasteland, but in September suddenly there's things to watch again!

How could I forget that?! Especially since I've been so excited about the start of shows like Fringe, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, House, Heroes, The Office...

Hey nieghbor! :wave2:
I've lived in both south Florida & central Florida & I figured the weather wouldn't be much different, especially since I don't live in northern Louisiana. When we moved here in early Feb. it was much, much colder then it had been in FL at that time though, which kind of threw us off, but we were quite happy about it regardless. I do hope the humidity goes down a bit though, it's been horrible lately.

Howdy! I live north of Baton Rouge on a farm a few miles outside of Zachary.

Yep, I remember we did have a cool front in February. Actually, our coldest temps seem to come in spurts more in February/March with an occasional "surprise" in April.

As for humidity, the good new is that it does go down from where it is right now! We were in New Orleans over the weekend & OMG the humidity was worse than anything I'd ever experienced. You could literally NOT dry off even standing in front of a fan. Just miserable! By Oct/Nov we usually have drier weather. And, BESTEST of all - Hurricane season is over come November! :cool1:

Oh, I know where that is! Not too far from where I am.

February here was great...nice & cold, little to no humidity, I loved it. It was perfect moving-in & exploring a new city weather.

I know what you mean. My family was visiting last week & we went to New Orleans last Monday. We were dying, it was just so dang hot & humid. It rained a bit & we figured it would cool us off a bit, but nope, it was that hot, nasty rain & afterwards the humidity was through the roof. My parents are now convinced that it is much more humid here then in Florida.

The end of hurricane season is always the best. I'm really hoping for a hurricane free year (knock on wood!)
