Things to do in Destin?

IMO, the Back Porch has become more of a "tourist trap" type of restaurant. Started out as a small place...now it's a really big place.

I may be wrong, but I believe this was one of the places found selling generic fish as a more expensive breed of fish....i.e. Only had one type of fish in the freezer, and sold it as other breeds of more expensive fish. Hopefully this has been corrected since the story broke several years ago.

The food is not bad there...but there are more authentic places to go for seafood. Dewey Destin (by the bridge) for one. AJ's is not bad either.

The Back Porch, The Crab Trap and Pompano Joes are owned by the same people. I think fewer people know about the latter two.

ETA: Another alternative to the Donut Hole (and one I prefer much better), is Another Broken Egg. They have awesome omelets and the best blackberry grits I've ever had.

Yes, do Dewey Destin's, for the fried shrimp.

Is that the shrimp stuffed with crab and wrapped in bacon?? That's my favorite.

Be sure you go to the original and not the one on 98 (though I'm sure that's good too). The original has great atmosphere!

Yes, we went to the Red Bar to hear some Dread Clampitt...
(Sunday and Mondays)
They are supposed to have good crab cakes and gumbo on the weekends, but we didn't make it back!!!!
Their slogan.... Cash Only, No reservations, come early, stay late!)
Yes, if you are not there early on busy nights, you will not find a place to park your car on the roadsides, and will have a long wait for a table.

Yes, we were at the original Dewey Destin's.
VERY rustic....
Shrimp was great!
Sides were okay...
I sure wish they had some good hushpuppies though...
(and, please do not defile my fresh gulf shrimp with bacon!!! :rotfl2: )

It is my understanding that the same outfit did take over a couple of the local restaurants... But, they have def. keep everything to the same (better) original standard at these than the ones they have always run. We saw the same guy running Pompano Joe's that we saw there years ago.

I think the Coconutty Pina Coladas he mixed for us were the best ever!

I heard about Another Broken Egg. We will give it a try as I love a good omelete! :thumbsup2
