A long time ago, when the earth was green,
There were more kinds of animals than you've ever seen;
They'd run around for "free food" while the earth was being born,
The loveliest of all was the…….

YAK!

(I’m sorry, it wasn’t YAK it was really our Fearless leader….Sheridac! ;) )

This is my little Trip Report or you could say, another perspective of what happens when you get a bunch of DISer’s, put them in once place and let them roam free at the Happiest Place on Earth.

If you’ve been following along some of the new TR’s on this board, you will know by know that, yes, I am one of them! I’m honoured to be an official Viking/Maelstrom/Dork in Dorkapolooza (;) Ashclan) and also a Canadian!

But don’t let that scare you!

The YAKkey Background.

As most of you have read in various current TR’s – Dorkapolooza, Mr. Silly, Kids Disney Action, Whirlwind Trippers X2, Frickles, Berg-Berts, and most importantly (for obvious reasons) The Bold and Beautiful…a Tale of Vikings, a bunch of us who met on the DIS were going to get together to eat, greet and be merry!

Each of us has a tale to tell about how we arrived at going to Disney mostly at the same time. My quest for free food and camaraderie started when a few of my Maelstrom friends realized that they were going to be at DW at the same time. They talked about it. Planned. Talked of having a DIS meet at the place where it all started….Maelstrom in Norway. I imagined myself going. But I knew this was going to out of the question as we were going as a family in July (see "Sizzlefest" .…in the Completed Trip Report thread) and according to DH, Disney once every 10 years or so is enough.

The list of DISers who were going to be in Florida at the end of September began to grow and grow. There were a number of threads, and even ones specifically for those staying at certain hotels. Before you knew it, those of us who thought there wouldn’t be a snowballs chance in H E – double hockey sticks of going started conniving, scheming and PMing (eh, Frick ;) ) trying to figure out how we too could get to Disney for free food and to meet some of our “imaginary cyber friends” and make them not so imaginary!

My trip came about when I realized, (hee-hee) I desperately needed a “girls” weekend. It had been five years. And guess what, Las Vegas, Cruising or the Beach was actually WAY more expensive than 5 nights (with Free Dining) at POP. Imagine that!
This is what I love about the travel industry. Prices change by the minute. They depend on who you are talking to, or what internet site you are on any given day. So, you can just about make anything appear as a GREAT deal if you set your mind to it!.

I only had one friend out of the normal group of six who was even remotely interested in doing a “girls weekend” to Disney. I suggested we could “drink around the world”. That should get their attention! Or better yet, ride Gary Sinise. That should convince them. But alas, I had only one taker, my good friend K. A Disney Newbie!
The others just didn’t get it…..and I know you all know what I’m talking about.

So plans were made, major sucking up was done with DH and the kids. Assurances were made that everything at home would be washed, prepared, listed and ready for Mom to be away for 5 days. DH wouldn’t have to do a thing……hee-hee!

And, this is how I came to join a very wonderful group of friends at the happiest place on earth.

YAKking, YAKking and more YAKking on the Disboards. How weird is it to be planning a trip with about 20 or so friends you’ve never met?

There I was planning, talking, PMing, chatting with people whom I’ve never met before and arranging to meet them in Disney World. (Actually I did meet a few of them in July for lunch…..and they were wonderful people) What was I, nuts!!!

I watch Dateline NBC sometimes. I don’t let my kids on the internet without being in the room. I know of all the dangers. But here I was planning a vacation with my “imaginary cyber friends” from a huge public discussion board called The DIS.

DH wasn’t happy with this…..at all. So I limited the information he received on the topic and threw in little bits and pieces as time progressed. After all I was going with K. For a nice quiet weekend. On a cheap vacation, with free food. Doing adult stuff. She was my out. Incase everyone turned out to be weird psycho's.

As time went on My ICF’s (Imaginary Cyber Friends) were making ADR’s and planning extra activities together. We even went so far as to have a chat meeting and emailed our itineraries. I was a little nervous about committing to anything, but did manage to prebook a dinner with a few ICF's one night.

Pre-trip reports were posted. With one very funny Pre-TR by Sheridac. It was all centered around Gillian’s Island. Very fitting. Closer to the big day, Sheridac even gave us our character assignments, for the three hour tour. I was given the huge task of being Issac the Bartender. I know, Issac wasn’t on Gilligan’s Island, but every cruise needs a bartender! Keeps the kids happy. And parents too! Plus, who doesn’t love a drink served in a genuine pineapple?

You all know the outcome. Everyone was normal, or appeared normal :lmao: fun loving, Disney freaks like myself. We had a fantastic time. And they’ve all become life long friends (I hope). Just like Walt would have wanted. Disney Magic!

Things that will make you YAK – What kind of title is this for a Trip Report to Disney?

You’re probably wondering about my chosen title.

Let me explain:

One of things we like to do over at the Maelstrom thread, besides welcoming new posters to the thread…(nudge, nudge, wink, wink, don’t lurk, say “hi!”) is the giving of nick-names. Most often they apply to our screen name. Mine has become YAK, as in Yzma and Kronk.

It has nothing to do with the slang definition, or the animal, or obsessive talking, but in some weird way if you get to know me it kind of does apply. ;) Except the one that means “arfing” with a B! Because I don’t do that! It makes me sick (really, I’m not kidding!….)

For the purpose of this TR – YAK will take on the meaning of several things. It’s an all purpose word.

Like YAKking. (talking)

Or explaining, What the YAK?

Or YAKking up a lung. (laughing so hard you do this)

Or just plain YAK…..very loud screaming at the top of your lungs…..as you will read about soon!

And for those who might have been enjoying a nice quiet evening at the Hippy Dippy Bar, on Friday September 29th you now know what all that noise was. :teeth:

I also would like to do this TR a little differently, so for the most part it will be a series of observations from my recent trip.

So, I hope you’ll join me in my little YAKKITY YAK adventure with free food, good times and new friends!

Yak????!!!!!!!!!!!

Yaksaac!!!!

I'm sooooo happy to see this!!!

I'm in.

Like Flynn.

:teeth:

Yay, YAK! Very nice start on your trippie!!!

Am I the first for once? If so, it's only because I'm a night owl and I saw your plug (thanks).

Looking forward to yet another perspective (YAP)!

YAK, WOOOHOOO!

Sounds like a very fun report. You do YAK well!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I might even stay onsite next year to participate in the activities instead of working and driving home except for a 2 hour meet!

Keep 'em coming...........

Sounds good to me.......happy to get in on the beginning of one of these reports. I'm anxious to know how your Disney newbie friend enjoyed the weekend. I'm trying to talk my friend into going on a girls trip next September and so far if there's shopping and (maybe, hopefully) free food....she's in. ;)

I'm IN, baby! Looking forward to hearing yet another POV on the Maelstrom Meet/Dorkapalooza weekend! And, I, too, am interested in hearing how K enjoyed it all. I didn't realize that she was a newbie!!!

:thumbsup2

Hi there YAk!!

Ok, I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of the Maelstrom code of your group, although I come across it often on these boards as i only like to read superior writing, but wanted to wish you well with your trippie, i have read your work before and am always impressed, so will be heartily looking forward to more. BTW, if I had a nickname it would probably be Stitchgirl: caffeine sends me crazy, I'm definately naughty but oh so loyal. :thumbsup2

Awesome! So cool to see that you are doing a trippie! I loved your "sizzling" one from the summer :thumbsup2

Okay...now I'm FINALLY getting it. Been reading and (lurking) for awhile and always saw the same people posting to each others tr's - you all met up at WDW - how COOL is that?

Thanks for making it clear to me...haha. I'm really not a dumb blonde. I just appear that way....sometimes - LOL.

I'm in and I'm subscribing. Getting myself a cup of tea.

Going to enjoy this much more now that I know what is going on.

How many of you met up? How much time did you all spend together?

Neat.

Little scary meeting a bunch of strangers offline but sounds like it was fun.

Can't wait to hear all about it.

Thanks for reading everyone. Your support of my little TR makes me all YAKky :goodvibes :thanks:

lex - keep reading. More on K and her adventures coming up!

NAB - very funny, you fellow Canuck! ;)

blue - welcome! More details about "the group" to come. Stay tuned ;)

Here is part two....

enjoy!

YAKing to the Airport……Why is it they say that one of the signs of true love is taking a Significant Other to the airport for a solo trip at least once?

DH so nicely took me to the aiport. More like drove me…....nuts! Don’t get me wrong he loves me. We have been married for a long time. We have two adorable children together. A huge mortgage. BUT. He drove me to the airport to meet my friend K for our flight to Orlando. All the way there he was grumbling, complaining and basically trying to pick a domestic at 7am. He really wasn’t happy that I was going on this trip. Leaving him with the kids for 5 days, with my parents (his in-laws) who agreed to look after the kids to help DH out, clothes set out for the 5 days, little zippy bag lunches, labeled and ready to go, and a full set of instructions taped to the fridge. Oh the horror, leaving him with instructions! DS had hockey and DD had figure skating and it was month end!!!. Plus, he had war movies to watch and grass to cut. What was I thinking!

All the while, I was feeling a little YAKky. This was because I was very nervous about flying. For four days before. All those unrealistic thoughts about the plane; a screaming blazing fireball heading for the ground at 300mph! You see, I worked in the airline industry for 18 years. Did a fair bit of flying (no, I wasn't a Flight Attendant) I think I’ve heard it all and you’d think that I’d be OK with the flying experience. In fact, I love it. But not until I actually get on the plane. I've watched too many of those History Channel aircrash specials. So, before the flying day happens, a inner conflict by way of an internal dialogue goes on in my head. What would happen if something were to happen, my babies would be orphans (ya, right!). It's safer than driving. What would DH do without me? Flying is fun! You love it. Who would make the lists?

How exhausting!

By now, I was feeling as if I needed to YAK, not in the good way. I didn’t have time to get anything to eat when we left the house, so I was starving. And the traffic to the Toronto airport rivals that of Atlanta and Los Angeles in the morning….all with DH YAKing at me non-stop with all the reasons in his mind why I shouldn't be going on this trip. Today.

YAKing on the Plane….Why is it people from a time-zone that is a half hour different than the rest of the world are so great?

I love Newfoundland! It’s such a cool place. You can get “screeched” there and get a certificate to prove it. And the people are really friendly. They sometimes talk with a really cool accent. They basically live on a rock. Very close to Greenland. And when it’s 9am in Toronto, it’s 10:30am in Newfoundland! And I got to YAK to a “New-fin-lander” on the way to Orlando!

(aside: If you really want to know how great “Newfoundlanders” are, read the book by Jim Defede, entitled, “The Day The World Came to Town 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland” and you’ll know what I’m talking about!)

We had checked in our flight online the previous night, so upon arrival at the terminal we had our bags tagged and weighed and off to US Customs we went. The line was huge. You see, Toronto Airport is the third largest US entry point in North America. Think about that for a minute. Entering the US in Toronto? Once you cross into the US terminal, past the little glass door and through customs you have entered the United States. Pretty cool, eh?

When it was my turn, the Customs Officer asked me where exactly the address was that I was traveling to. The told him The Pop Century Hotel at Disney World. And he replied, oh, I’m a Florida resident myself. We proceed to have a discussion about Food and Wine and Free Food. My friend K was getting worried. We were YAKing way too much. And as always when long conversations occur with Customs Officers, one thinks that there is problem. No problem, just talkin’ Disney!

Once through, a nice little security lady offer me a clear zip lock bag to put my travel sized liquids in. I didn’t have any, but I thought it was very nice of her to offer. Only in Canada! Definitely not in Orlando, as you will read later.

We boarded the plane and took our seats. I was seated beside a rather nervous lady, who looked like she was going to YAK. I came to find out she was from Newfoundland….surprise, surprise ;) I immediately struck up a conversation, and YAKed with her most of the way, diverting her attention from her impending YAK attack.

Except when the flight attendant came around with the menu and price list for the snacks.

My, how the airlines have changed since my last flight, pre-9/11!

K and I decided it was time to start our vacation properly, with a Coke and a Smile!

Rum and Coke…..Happy Coke….get it??? :teeth:

A huge smile. You see, I learned a couple of things when I used to fly a lot. One, if they don’t give you the little mini bottle and they pour the whole 2 oz’s in the tiny little plastic glass with the obligatory two ice cubes, there leaves very little room for the Coke part! And, at 37,000 feet each drink is equivalent of two on the ground. If you don’t believe try having a few drinks in Denver! So the moral of the story here is ask for the can of coke with your Rum.

Two – two – two drinks in one!

The flight went well. A little YAKky on the landing. But who cared, we were in Orlando. Whoo-hoo!

Up next: Grand-YAKky-Gathering at POP and finally pictures!

Good tip there Yaksaac!!!

Sure glad there wasn't a YAK attack mid-air :teeth: BTW, know all about domestics when the other half isn't getting their way, and of course they start this when you are trying to go out the door, to the plane etc...the horror of taking responsibility for their own kids is just too much for some  Anyway, loving your work,
