Things that people get wrong

My surname is Bourke and yes you've guessed it - people drop the O and call me Burke. Does anyone call the actor - Mickey Rurke or the Prince's nanny Tiggy Legge-Burke - no they do not so why oh why do they miss out my O!

Not so much things that people get wrong, but some annoying little things:

Phrases like "at the end of the day", "basically (at he beginning of every sentence)", "well what it is..." really are annoying!

However, I'm well aware that us Welsh often come out with a phrase or two that annoys people. A favourite of mine is "I'll see you after!"

...AFTER WHAT?! Lol!

By the way, I'll do it now in a minute ;)

I hate when television programmes don't use capital letters for people's names, places or days of the week - they are proper nouns!

I know this is kind of an outdated meaning, but it annoys me when people say that something was 'decimated'. It was reduced by ten percent, really? That's quite specific!

Isn't that another example of how language changes tho? It was also a word for a form of Roman punishment. No doubt people use the word 'petrified' when they don't literally mean 'turned to stone' ;)

:goodvibes

This is not to do with language, but problems someone clearly had with interpreting it. I was reading reviews for a tan accelerator online. One lady made no reference whatsoever to what she thought of the product, which I put down to the fact that she had not used it. Her main gripe was the ambiguous "instructions" for use. She said it stated "For external use only", but went on to complain that it does not contain SPF. She appeared quite confused by this as she went on to ask, "So am I supposed to use it inside or outside?" :rotfl:

I brought a dress instead of I bought a dress .

That is easily the most annoying and common thing for people to get wrong.

It seems to be a regional dialect thing though more than a gramatical error.

I always get affect and effect confused. :)
