I was at Walmart this morning doing the weekly shop. I came across this couple shopping for candy in the Halloween section. 2 adorable little kids. The mom started talking to me. Telling me how they are having a huge Halloween party and they had to buy lots of candy for said party. Well, that's wonderful, have fun I said back. I happened to get in the check out line behind them and she is talking back and forth between the cashier and myself about this great party. $172 worth of candy she bought!! Anyway, long story short she pulls out her card and I hear her tell the cashier it will be EBT-food stamps! I almost lost it right there! It makes me sick that some of us are there working our tail ends off and this person can throw a party and our tax $ paid for it!! I don't mind that the help is there for people who need it but, that is just not right!! Am I wrong to feel like that??

This is very upsetting I really think I would have said something to this person there are many families in need and are denied for food stamps

Amazing! But so sad that so many do this...like those who collect disability and really don't need it.

There is a family at our school system. Dad was out of work for awhile so kids on reduced lunches. No biggie BUT they all had the updated phones and got new ones every couple of months (4 kids). They had all the new clothes. Mom now helps with an after school activity...and WHOLE family gets into all the sports events "free" because they help carry supplies in. Most of us spend $150 on a sports pass.

This one about Halloween party takes the cake for today though! :confused3

It is ridiculous!!!! :sad2: For some families that is a week worth of groceries.

Wow...No, that is crazy. I hate to have "big brother" looking over our shoulder, but sometimes (when you see those that abuse the system), I think soem of those proposed law changes, like no sugar items, cokes, etc bought would be a good rule...

IMHO I think that EBT-Food Stamps should be limited to nessities and healthy food items. Junk food is an extra that you can live without. Food stamps should be a hand up in hard times not a hand out. I'm not against helping people , but I get ticked off when it's abused.

Hey I can TOP this story. We know a family....have known them for years. Our oldest son plays varsity soccer with this boy now. Last year after Thanksgiving.... they had a fire in the basement of their home. It was caused by their sump pump. Sadly they lost their home due to mostly SMOKE damage (at least that is what we were told) with the basement having sustained more than smoke damage. Anyway.....it was declared a loss. An email from the school (they have 3 kids) my high school son goes to and the schools the younger kids go to...was SENT out to parents..asking for donation of clothing and house hold items. Also, my son and their son happen to also play on the same club soccer team...so that coach sent out a MASS email asking for donations too with a bank acct. that had been set up in their name. They even did a CHICFILA FUNDRAISER for this family.

Okay this all sounds normal..a community coming together to help a family with a tragedy. Well the problem is THIS FAMILY IS FILTHY RICH....I mean they own 4 other homes besides the one that was damaged. They have two beach places, one on the west coast and one nearby that they did MOVE INTO after the fire. The wife drives a HUMMER and the husband a PORSCHE. So people NOT knowing the family background ....gave clothing items and household items. THEN the guidance counselor sent out another email asking for the donations to be STOPPED because they had gotten enough clothes. HOWEVER...she said that the family needed GIFT CARDS from places like grocery stores, Home Depot, Lowes, Target, Walmart, and even BEST BUY. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm BEST BUY????!!!!! My husband read that email and said "sounds like we are paying for their kids Christmas". My son said that Brandon came to school right after the fire and he was wearing BRAND NEW CLOTHES from high end stores..American Eagle and such.... expensive shoes and such. They were not clothes donated. He gets soccer shoes that cost 300 and 400 bucks a pop. He is always well dressed despite the fact that they got all sorts of donations.

Just at Thanksgiving they had taken a cruise and taken a friend along for each of their kids and FOOTED THE BILL FOR THE 3 FRIENDS.

Fast forward to the spring....this boy turns 16 and he gets a BRAND NEW SPORTS CAR FOR HIS 16TH B'DAY. YES brand new. His family and another family held a double birthday party for these boys in downtown Annapolis on the water. My son went to this.

I see his mom all the time at games....she doesn't work, she always has her nails done, she is always talking about the NEW HOUSE being built and the upgrades they are doing to the kitchen and bathrooms and blah blah blah. They went to CA this summer and somewhere out of the country. I forget where ....my son told me but I have forgotten. Maybe Europe.

HOW DOES THIS FAMILY LIVE WITH THEMSELVES?????????????????? I mean REALLY???!!!!!! Needless to say....this burnt me up. BIG TIME. There are so many people out there that need help when a tragedy like this happens and actually NEED the help to function in life.

She wasn't the least bit ashamed either! I didn't see any real food but, I wasn't looking that hard. She did ask the guy with her if he thought they would have enough for the rest of the month! What now your kids are going to have eat ramen noodles so, you and your friends can party?! I agree that they should be limited to "real food" not chips, soda, candy etc. I'm sorry but, when I am limited for our food budget those are the first things to go!! I don't spend $170 a week on food to feed our family of 4, let alone that much in candy!!

Agree'd. It blows my mind how these are abused! Its supposed to help you live for a little bit. It shouldn't cover candy, soda, all this crazy stuff.

I didn't realize until talking to someone who was on them that they did not cover toothpaste, deodorant, that type of personal care stuff in our state. So you can get all the candy and soda but nothing to brush your teeth with.

:scared1: that's a little over 2 weeks of groceries for us! That's shocking. I don't know what I would have done, probably given the side eye but I don't know if I would have had the kahunas to say something to her. It is sick though.

OMG! Yes, this story beats the other one, but they are both bad.:sad2:

I don't know if it even does any good to say something to people like that! They don't see anything wrong with what they are doing! :sad2:

Years ago at the grocery I stood holding a tiny package of hamburger, mind you the cheapest you can buy (I was a single mom who made like $10 over the limit for food stamps). In front of me was a women trying to buy a bag of dog food with her stamps. She was told she couldn't, so she marched past us all in line, straight to the meat cooler and brought back a huge package of ground chuck and announced her dog was going to eat like a king. I was shocked :confused3. A few people in line had a few choice words for her and they weren't very nice at all. I just stood there with my mouth open, I will never forget it.

i thought food stamps were only allowed to be used for things like milk, eggs, meat,
I have been behind someone in line who had to put back grape juice b.c her stamps only covered orange juice...

so how can it possibly cover $170 of candy????

You're probably thinking of WIC, which has a specific list of foods you can buy. Food stamps have fewer restrictions (though I have to admit it never occurred to me that you could use them to buy candy!)

Was the person maybe on WIC instead? I know in NY that WIC can only be used for healthy things, but food stamps from the gov't can be used for anything.

This is a local news website for my city. The discussion was very in-depth, but clear that you could buy lots of junk w/ food stamps.

Exactly. Wouldn't have done any good. They feel they are entitled. My SiL is like that. Currently on employment for quitting her job. MA unemployment is very good and she intends to collect the entire 99 weeks all the while never looking for employment. I did say something to her. She sees absolutely nothing wrong with it. :confused3:scared1:

I don't believe they cover deodorant, toilet paper, feminine products etc in my state. Yet, this woman can get almost $200 worth of candy? Just blows my mind.

From my experience as a cashier at a grocery store (a few years ago)- you are probably thinking of something like WIC. At least in Ohio - that is *very* spelled out with things they can have. We even had a list of brands, sizes, etc. that were allowed. Now the food stamps were pretty much whatever food items they wanted!

Well after they are done eating their candy and not brushing their teeth, they can go to the dentist for free with my tax dollars. :rotfl:
