Things that make you go...aaargh!

I've been in my usual frenzy of fall cleaning (much more important than spring cleaning imho) and have been emptying drawers and closets.

Sorting through some old vacation mementos and I find the bill from our 2000 Wilderness Lodge stay. We took a few family members(8 people total) and had multiple rooms. This was the first year that I became aware of DVC. I begged my dh to go look at them with me. He kept saying we'd check it out but we never did. There was never enough time. It got put on the back burner and even though I mentioned it quite frequently, nothing came of it...until 8 years later. We bought into DVC this year.

That 2000 bill for lodging was over $9,000!!!


Now you know I brought this to my husband's attention. Handed him the DVC brochure and the $9,000 bill. He just got this kind of sick look on his face.

We totally understand and agree. It was a $7,000.00 Poly bill in 2000 that pushed over over the DVC edge. This week we will have a Grand Villa at the BWV's and our total bill will only be in the hundreds. All of our BWV contracts are paid for so the out of pocket expense will be minimal. Can't beat DVC IMHO.

Yeah, I spent 6 years frequenting WDW before "catching on" to DVC and purchasing! Oh well........at least it wasnt 16 years!!

I know what you mean, we spent over 10K in 2years On our third trip we went and took the DVC tour. One month later we went down and stayed offsite and looked at all the DVC resorts. Looking at all the resorts helped me decide where I would want to stay. Bought a resale 2 months later

We'd been spending $4000 to $7000+ on trips and accommodations for years. We'd looked at DVC, but just never got around to jumping in. In early 2004, we rented points for a 2 bd at OKW for an extended family group of 7. We called and bought a BWV resale for cash the day after we got home. It paid for itself in two trips. (Yes, we've kicked ourselves for waiting so long.)

Our scattered family keeps growing, and now we love inviting them to join us for family get-togethers - without worrying about the big price tag for rooms. We love it for just the two of us, too.

I know what you mean! We took family back in June and it was nice to ignore the $8000 bill for 2 2-bdrm villas! Of course, we've paid far more than that into DVC, but it's almost paid for itself by half!!!

So the good news is that we cannot be accused of being slow learners. We bought into DVC on our very first trip to WDW. As Southern Californians, we had and have been to Disneyland hundreds of times, but we took the tour and purchased DVC during our very first trip to WDW.

The bad news is that that first trip was our "trip of a lifetime." We stayed on the Platinum plan at The Grand Floridian concierge level for two weeks in March 2003. So are you ready for it ... are you ready ... the tab was over $15,000!! Wish they had that "put part of your current stay toward buy-in" promotion, but regardless we bought and we have never looked back!

edk35 --- I do want to find those bills so I can once again say to my DH - See it is a good thing!!!!!! LOL.

We spent 7,000 in 2005, $4,000 in 2006 and over $10,000 in April this years YIKES!!!!!

This year my DH (who said he would NEVER EVER IN A MILLION YEARS BUY DVC OR ANY TIMESHARE) decided it WAS smart to get DVC (AKV!!). We were staying CL for 9 days at AKL this Sept (08) and I had booked a bounceback to the Poly for the following September for 3 rooms (each 9 days) @ $4100 PER ROOM ($12300.00) I FINALLY convinced him to get 200 pts to AKV (for now, I feel we may add on another 100 in the future ). After spending $6k+ this September, then the 12300 in the following, he realized it wasn't such a bad thing and now, we're proud DVC members! And with the DVC I'm taking my mom and my boys (no DH) to a fun relaxing week in January to SSR

We know what you mean! We were spending $10,000 every year with our Disney vacations until we bought into DVC in 2006.

We knew that spending $10,000/year on accomodations was not financially prudent - and the only thing holding us back (from buying DVC) was the CDN/USD exchange at the time (which turned in our favor for us a few years ago, helping us buy 460 points since 2006).

You want to hear something really sad?Way back in the 90's we took a vacation and we stayed at the Beach Club, which was relatively new. (I don't think my beloved Boardwalk was even finished at that point.) On our way to the elevators, we saw a little desk with a person behind it, selling some sort of timeshare or something.* The person told us that if were to buy in, we could have applied the amount that we spent on our accomodations to the price of the timeshare as a special promotion.* If I remember correctly, we had spent over $3,000 on our room, and I was intrigued but wasn't going to waste my time in some sort of sales meeting...It was DVC, of course and we bought in in 1998, and not joining earlier has been our only regret.

When we honeymooned in '95, we saw the sales info at Wilderness and oh, if only oh, we had been smart and bought then!! Thankfully, (or not) we waited until we had dd and only went twice before purchasing DVC....but we were sitting in the CBR in 2004 watching the promos and it still took us another 1 and 1/2 years before we bought in...now, we are VERY HAPPY WE DID!!

On our first trip in '05, I remembered asking DH "What's the best kept secret?" or "What's Disney Vacation Club?" I distinctly remember him saying "It's insanely expensive. If we have to ask, it's too much." Well, let's just say we became members before we returned in '07. We saw the light.
