Just curious, how was what searl said a personal attack? Maybe an attack against all smokers, but I thought a personal attack is against one person?

if she said it about all smokers
and I'm a smoker
then it's a personal attack.

If she stated most smokers then that's a different story..

But she said all which logistically implies me included which I take personally hence the personal attack.

If you were say Mexican and I said all mexicans should be deported, would you take it personal? If I said mexicans here illegally, maybe not so much. See what I'm saying?

I think a personal attack would be more along the lines of actually using your name and the accusation in the same sentence. Since she said all smokers it was more of a broad accusation. Yes, you are offended and you take it personally but I don't see it as a personal attack.

So basically I can become a bigot and generalize other races,. creeds etc in the open and can feel good about myself because I didn't specifically name drop?
And said race, creed, etc shouldn't take it personal?
I gaurantee you that wouldn't be the case

No, not at all. You are upset and rightfully so. You are a smoker and feel that you have the right to smoke, as you do in the legally designated places. The PP feels that all smoking should be banned and that smoking is a foul habit. She denigrated your right to smoke but actually DID NOT call you out specifically. Anybody has the right to feel the way they want. We cannot stop telling people how to feel. But to actually act upon feelings? There are laws that prevent that.

It's a double standard isn't it.. If I were to post here saying something about someone's religion, I would've gotton a repremand. But I didn't personally call some one out.

But here because I'm a smoker, and being demonized but not outright, it's acceptable to the fact that she shouldn't be penalized for her opinion.

I hear what you are saying but if rules are made for generalizing things shouldn't that go for all things?
