I had to cook a pound of bacon yesterday morning. I am not the best cook, I would never survive a career as a line cook, for sure.

The bacon grease was getting pretty heavy, so I decided to take the turkey baster and suction some of the grease out of the pan. I now have a melted turkey baster. Looks like I need to spend $1.99 for a new one. DOH. :rotfl2:

oh man, the things that went through my mind when I read the title.................:)

Oh my!

Not what I was thinking of when I opened this thread!

I had to use a turkey baster to pick up a paint spill once. I knocked over an entire gallon of paint. Ugh. Had to buy a new turkey baster and put the old one with the painting supplies.

Definitely not what I was expecting...:lmao:

You're supposed to empty the pan of the grease in between batches. It usually takes three batches (and three emptyings of grease) in my griddle pan to fry a pound of bacon.

That has to be filed under "Things that Sound Good in Theory"! :lmao:

We have a number of those moments in our file, don't worry! :rolleyes1

Oh, and bacon? Microwave all the way! :thumbsup2

That headline sounded naughty.....santa is still watching!!

Ok seriously, I am glad I am not the only one that thought this was going in an entirely other direction!!! So of course I immediately opened to read what was up....
:)

Another naughty mind here. Especially after watching an episode of Sunset Beach about 10 years ago....

love mine no worries about it..

That's funny because I did the exact same thing one time, but mine didn't melt. I guess I just got lucky. Like you, I won't be winning any cooking awards anytime soon.

OH, another thing; IMO anyway, that you shouldn't do with a turkey baster is, baste a turkey. My MIL told me years ago that she had never basted a turkey in her life (and she's the best cook I know). She said, all it really does is lower the temperature in the oven. So, I've never basted a turkey either, and I've not made a dry one yet. We do keep them covered though, but put it on a cooking sheet at the very end for 30 minutes to crisp the skin.

I've often wondered if it's those who insist on basting that are the ones making the claims that stuffing a turkey is dangerous because it doesn't reach a high enough temp for it to be safe. No basting here and stuffing always reaches a safe temperature (and I've checked it 2 years in a row to be sure - before this time, I never questioned the safety issue at all).

Just FYI for future reference, the simplest thing to do about excess bacon grease is to just lift the pan off the fire and dip a wad of paper towels into the pan to absorb it, then set the greasy paper on a plate until it cools before putting it in the trash (so that you don't melt the trash bag with hot grease.)

This thread could have gone so wrong in so many different directions so quickly.

I have a dirty mind as well :) Nothing like finding the thread you are about to open IS NOT what you were thinking lololol

Broil bacon in the oven on a baking sheet! Way less mess, very quick.
